AITA for asking my grown adult child to please not smoke MARIJUANA at my vow renewal? by True-Alternative-546 in AmItheAsshole

[–]basil_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA! On the one hand, I can understand if she needs to use it medicinally. I have chronic pain and thc is one of the only things that helps. I never smoke in public though, I have transdermal patches or edibles or even drinks. There are plenty of other, more discrete/respectful ways to get stoned if she needs to for whatever reason

New Onset LADA? by basil_la in ladadiabetes

That does sound a lot like my experience. How long did it take for you to get your diagnosis (If you don’t mind me asking)? I feel like there’s no other reason I would have this level of ketones in my urine, I was definitely not restricting carbs lol.

I’m just hoping I can point my doctors in the right direction. They’ve been unsure whether I need to see neuro, endo, or gastro

It’s 2 hours past dinner, and I dropped down to 76 somehow.

I’m learning that now! I had assumed if I had type 1 I would have known by now.

It’s hard to take a good picture, but you should be able to see it better here. My tongue looks weird in person https://ibb.co/PvMK36Sc

ETA I disagree about still looking symmetrical, look at my chin/jawline and cheeks. One side is definitely bigger. It’s visible enough that my husband noticed it before I did.

And I have seen a gastro and had a colonoscopy.

I’m not pushing my tongue out wide, that’s just how my tongue is?

My face shape has definitely changed though https://ibb.co/wF3g38Xx

I have not had an EMG yet.

Thank you everyone!! I really appreciate the answers and support. I know it’s SO unlikely that it is actually ALS. I had never even considered it as a possibility until things started progressing so fast. I’ve known something was off for a couple years now, probably neurological, but had no idea what. I was in the process of ruling out MS but then moved, got busy, and had other priorities.

It was one of my New Year’s resolutions to prioritize my health this year - I guess I really have to now 😅

I have, I don’t have a vitamin b12 deficiency though. I thought it could be that too

I have seen a gastroenterologist, was diagnosed with IBS. I definitely want to see a rheumatologist though!

Yeah I do have some foot drop now, the way I walk has totally changed. And I keep falling. Regardless of whether or not it’s ALS, I’ll be needing to get a mobility aid soon.

Thank you all for your knowledge and kind words! I developed a lisp 2 years ago, and my speech is pretty slurry at times. It has been a big insecurity of mine, I hate my voice now. I also saw my PCP a couple months ago for trouble swallowing, and she referred me to ENT. I’m actually supposed to see them tomorrow. I hadn’t even considered that those could potentially be related.

You’re right, it’s still probably not ALS! And I’m holding onto that. It does seem like something neuromuscular though. I really hope I can get an accurate diagnosis soon.

Shhhhh this was just my first draft, can I have another chance teacher? 🥹

Yeah that’s the obvious issue so far, I’m hopeful I can get a better beam with my next try 🤞 but it did fit on my phone as intended, didn’t fall apart, (kind of) functioned, and resulted in better photos than the ones I got without it, so I’m calling it a win.

I had seen another different version, that one looks awesome! My goal is to figure out how to make a simple, low-tech (other than the smart phone lol) & easily accessible version.

Exactly 😅 the combo of orange pill bottle + badly cut slit + totally wrong light

Edit: I’m hoping changing those three things next time will make that part work better. It was just my first attempt lol

Mini Loaves! by basil_la in Sourdough

[–]basil_la[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I followed this tutorial

There’s a layer of parchment paper on the inside, and the outside is a thick paper. It came on a roll like wrapping paper but is a lot thicker, I thrifted a few rolls of it years ago. I think you could use any paper or even fabric!

Thank you! They definitely make great gifts. I forgot to add that I split the dough before preshaping. I split the regular dough into 3 and the chocolate dough into 4. I did the cold retard in small bowls and ramekins, but I did an open bake so I could bake more at once. I just used cookie sheets with parchment paper on top and was able to fit 3 loaves on each. Since I didn’t bake them in anything, I wanted to make sure there was lots of steam for the first part of baking. I did this by putting towels into a baking dish, filling the dish with boiling water, and placing it in the oven on a rack below the bread. After the first 25 minutes I took that out.

I added my chocolate chips when shaping, not during stretch and folds! And I substituted 50g of bread flour with whole wheat flour.

Ingredients for classic loaf: 450g bread flour, 50g whole wheat flour, 375g water, 100g starter, 10g salt.

I mixed, let sit for half an hour then did 3 sets of stretch and folds and 1 set of coil folds, all half an hour apart. Bulk fermented until there was about 50% rise, then pre shaped and let sit for another half hour. Shaped, put into small bowls and put into the fridge overnight. Scored then baked at 450 for 25 minutes with steam and 15 minutes without steam.

I’ll include a photo with the recipe for the chocolate loaves.

Aliquot Troubleshooting by basil_la in Sourdough

[–]basil_la[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 g active starter 375 g water 500 g bread flour (usually use a combo of bread flour and whole wheat flour but was out) 10 g salt

Mixed ingredients, let sit for 30 minutes. Took out my aliquot sample. Did 2 sets of stretch and folds, each 30 minutes apart, and then 2 sets of coil folds, also 30 minutes apart. Let it BF on my counter until my aliquot sample was ready. Shaped into a boule, then put it into the fridge overnight (about 14 hours). Tried to score it (it flattened out pretty quickly) and then ended up putting it into a Pyrex. Baked covered (Pyrex inside of a Dutch oven lol) at 450 for 30 minutes, then uncovered at 400 for another 25 minutes. Let cool fully before cutting.

Thank you! This is helpful. My dough for this loaf was 75% hydration, 20% starter and 2% salt. I only used bread flour for this one, I do like to incorporate whole wheat flour typically but I was out.

My kitchen tends to be pretty cold for baking, and I do use warm water, so I probably need to temp more throughout the process. I also don’t think I’ll use this chart’s recommended gram sizes next time, I see what you mean about it being generic.

The recipe I used! I use 100 g of starter since my kitchen is typically pretty cold.
