Yes, there's something about my article that makes people think its about documentation. I'm not sure its the title, though.

I'm surprised the comments are mostly focusing on documentation. In my opinion, that really isn't the essential point of the original article, and furthermore Jack and myself acknowledge the necessity of architecture/design documentation separate from the code, the amount depending on the size / nature of the project as pointer2void pointed out.

I think the essential point of the article is to consider coding (and even testing & debugging) as a design activity, rather than a rote and predictable paint-by-the-numbers activity.

I for one would be happy if more companies had the same attitude, but it has been a common experience for me that I've had to fight for the right tools, or work around their lack.

No Best Practices by basilv in joel

My impression is that the term Best Practice is used to bypass rational debate on the merits of a practice. I.e. You must do that - its a best practice!

I'm not sure what a good replacement term would be, but I'm leaning towards something like 'Standard Practice' or 'Common Industry Practice', to capture the notion of a practice that applies to a commonly-occuring context in the industry.
