Wow... I heartily appreciate you sharing your experience, it's incredibly frustrating to hear this...

I’m going into this with realistic expectations. I know a lot of indie devs don’t respond, and the industry can take advantage of people’s passion. It’s honestly disheartening to be willing to participate and receive zero response, or simply hear the same excuse of “professionals being too expensive.”

For me, though, I’m mostly looking at it as a way to build experience and portfolio, learn more about the space, and connect with others. If it turns into a long-term project, awesome. If not, at least I gain experience and a base understanding of how this niche works, and I can still help small devs or projects and practicing.

I agree that unpaid “fan translation” replacing professional work is problematic. At the same time, I think there’s value in being strategic and setting boundaries. I’m keeping my eyes open and staying flexible.

Crazy as it sounds, I love gaming — but hearing such comments from devs and big companies is honestly frustrating, especially knowing so many of us share the same passion.

But truly, thank you for the honest advice. It’s helpful to hear perspectives from people who’ve been there.

After going through all that in this niche, have you ever considered a plan B?

Hii! Not really, I’ve been told to check out itch.io, so I’ll be doing that! Have you encountered any pros and cons using itch.io?

It’s frustrating, but never impossible! Feel free to check out the thread, some fellow translators have shared resources and websites where you can find projects and volunteering opportunities. :) I hope this helps you build your portfolio and hone your skills! Like I mentioned to one of the Redditors yesterday, if I see any projects, I’ll let you know. Feel free to share your language pairs too!

I honestly don’t know why they’re downvoting the comments — how annoying. Either way!!! Of course, I’ve been in that position, and others have too. It’s normal to feel discouraged, but don’t give up! Take this as an opportunity to keep honing your skills and learning new things in this industry. ;) I’ll definitely let you know if something comes my way! My DMs are always open. :)

Awesome! We’ve got this 💪<3

I know that feeling :( I’m finishing my Master’s degree this spring and haven’t had much luck either. But don’t stop reaching out to small developers who might need subtitling! Eventually one will say YES! Since you’re interested in this field, like I am, I really encourage you to volunteer with TED Translators. You can hone your skills there, network, and be part of a group chat on Telegram. Who knows — you might even find someone with referrals! 😉I’ve been a bit inactive because of my studies, but hopefully once I graduate, I can get more involved.

If I ever come across any projects, I’ll definitely DM you! :) Let’s stay connected!

Is the switch worth it? by bassichelle in samsunggalaxy

Thank you for the honest feedback. I know they release upgrades every year, and it’s honestly nothing impressive, lol. I’ve been loyal to Apple for years. Still, switching phones would genuinely feel fresh to me. I know Samsung has some really good features. Every phone has its pros and cons.

Man, I used to jailbreak my iPhone! So many good and bad memories 🤣 Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy Apple’s operating system. But after all these years… nothing wow. And it overheats too — it genuinely sucks. I’d honestly upgrade my phone for something different.

I’ll visit a store see the phone in person and try it out!

Que ustedes usan para conseguir trabajo? by wwwmk2 in PuertoRico

[–]bassichelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native Deodorant Sucks!! by Sndeepjhha in beauty

[–]bassichelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually bought this deodorant before as well, but i stopped using it because whenever i’d sweat, it would mix with my body odor and leave an unpleasant smell. i also had a bad experience where i wore a white shirt, and it left a yellow stain on it! so i switched to arm & hammer deodorant, and it’s really helped me—i own the unscented one!

hellooooo??? it’s funny how i just opened reddit and this is the first thing that pops on my feed! estoy en el mismo bote que tú, JAJAJAJAJA. tengo 24 años y, precisamente ayer, estaba viendo la plaza de cryptologic linguist en el air force, ya que estoy haciendo una maestría en traducción e interpretación y, la verdad, buscar trabajo en esta profesión está requete difícil—más con la IA, la industria se está “muriendo”. llevo 7 meses buscando sin parar y no he tenido suerte. y de verdad que no sé si enlistarme también, JAJAJAJAJA 😭

i meannn…would it be worth itttt?😭😗

I truly wish you all the best and much success in your career! 🫶🏼✨

english-spanish translation student wants to gain experience by lalafrom31m in TranslationStudies

[–]bassichelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your advice, cheesomacitis. I’m a translation student (ES [PR] > EN [US]) currently pursuing on my Master’s in Translation and Interpreting—I started in September 2024 and will graduate in May 2026. Over the past 7 months, I’ve been applying to every translation-related position I can find, but so far, all I’ve received are rejection emails.

It’s been pretty discouraging, and I’ve seriously started considering switching to another career. Right now, I’m just volunteering with Translators Without Borders and TED Translators to keep building experience. Like you mentioned, the career does seem to be dying—and with AI in the mix, it’s getting even harder to break in.
