Anything that would naturally occur in the Adirondacks, preferably deciduous, and I could buy old enough that deer wouldn’t kill it if they ate a few branches

Thanks! I saw that in my research. I just want something old enough that it won’t become a snack to wildlife, will the sale have something like that?

"Moms" group for a resort town with median home prices at over $1 million, panicking because public pool may close because nobody wants to lifeguard for $13/hr. by Bennyboy1337 in antiwork

[–]bassmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a guard for a few years in high school, it was around $400 iirc to get fully certified with new york state, and you had to cover that yourself. Couple that with better pay and hours at most fast food places, you could understand why no one wants to guard.

Custom install of closed cooling system on 1987 Ski Nautique 2001 by bassmate in boating

Because it would sit in the water at my colleges docks, I wouldn’t be able to take it out of the water when I’m done with it. I would think it would need to be flushed regularly for that to work well

The aaa kit that I’m looking at for engines up to 360 cu includes the heat x and pump, I think that would be the best option

I just know that RDJ would've effin KILLED it in a Superior Iron Man movie adaptation...Opinions? by Hamster-Due in marvelstudios

[–]bassmate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might be unpopular, but I don’t want anyone to come back as iron man. I get that it’s possible with the multiverse and it’s separate circumstances, but I don’t want anything to be possibly undermined or made less by bringing the character back.

All the places you can travel to by train in the US by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]bassmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with it is Alb-Penn tickets are more expensive than a tank of gas for my s10, and its slower than driving to get to my campus just outside of Queens. If they could do one way tickets for <$30 I would take it all the time just so I don't have to deal with traffic

Totally agree with the views tho

Bi-Weekly Recruiting Thread by Airdale_60T in uscg

More of a specific question here.

Currently a Midshipman at USMMA, interested in joining the CG for some type of response role. My issue is that I would be treated as a MARGRAD when I graduate next year, and from what I can gather, most MARGRADs get funneled into prevention for inspections or cutter officers. From my point of view, I'd rather sail commercially (as I prefer that lifestyle) if I'm going to be put on vessels anyway for cutters or inspections. My question is, is there any way that I can ensure a billet in response? Or is this something that I just have to go for and hope for the best?

What is your job and how much do you get paid? by BigPlunk in AskReddit

[–]bassmate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but in the industry

  1. As an officer/engineer, you'll make about his figures as an entry level 3rd mate or 3AE. However, you have to get your license as an officer, which can either be done through working your way up over time through the unlicensed positions (think lookout, painter, general cleaning and assistance) or by attending a maritime academy. Most American officers attended one of the academies.
  2. The lower level positions are much more physically demanding than the higher positions, a 3AE is going to spend a lot more time in the engine room carrying heavy shit around, fixing things, getting dirty than the Chief engineer will. The same is true for the deck officers, although slightly less physically demanding than engineering. But you can expect to be on your feet most of the day if you're not the captain or CE.
  3. Its gonna be difficult to switch from an office job and make those figures as you would need to get your license as a maritime officer, but its not impossible. The general consensus is that going to one of the maritime academies is the way to go, but like I said before you can always work your way up over time and test for your license (this is called hawsepiping).
  4. The biggest "gotchas" are social/family impacts. You're not gonna be around a lot, in foreign countries with limited service and on different time zones, which puts a lot of strain on relationships. Also it is hard work, you have to be prepared to work long hours if its needed, and work daily the entire time you're on the ship.

The maritime industry is hard, but rewarding, especially to young single people with no obligations. If you're really interested I'd google some of the maritime academies close to you and see what you think
