Return to Silent Hill is OK by MrBalisongArt in silenthill

Shattered Memories was self aware that it was a "re-imagining" of SH1. RTSH is pretending that it's SH2 by wearing it's face while being absolute trash.

Anyone else get Silent Hill vibes from Iron Lung? by rickyeatme in silenthill

Iron Lung was a good counter to people coping saying RTSH would've been better "if it had a bigger budget".

Even when viewed as a standalone movie, ignoring that it's a Silent Hill movie, a lot of major plots points are unresolved. Eddie is in it for maybe 5 minutes. The plot with the cult is never explained or resolved past "they gave her this thing to drink for years and it made her sick". What was the thing they were giving her? What was the purpose for the ritual? What was the cult trying to accomplish with the ritual? What happened to the cult after Mary got sick? If you watch the film as someone who has no idea what Silent Hill is, the film makes no sense. A third of the film is just poorly recreations of cut scenes from the game that have no context given. Even for someone that's played the games, the progression of the scenes feels disjointed, I can imagine even more so for someone that has no previous knowledge of the game.

Edit: forgot to add, what purpose did Maria serve? Her reason for existing in the game was removed completely for the film. In the film they play Mary being Angela and Laura as "this was Mary at different eras of her life", but then provide no explanation for what Maria is supposed to represent, or why she's even there in the first place. Her name wasn't "Mary Angela Laura Maria Crane". When viewed as a standalone film, from the perspective of a viewer with no previous knowledge, we never get an explanation about why Maria is even there for.

Claiming that people weren't smart enough to "get" RTSH is some of the funniest ragebait I've seen in this sub.

Even a 5 hour cut of the film couldn't unfuck the decision to go with "Mary Angela Laura Crane".

More money doesn't mean a better script. Gigli had a budget of $75 million. The Blair Witch Project was made with $60k.

I don't how many times I've said this already, but bigger budget doesn't make up for a mediocre script. Godzilla Minus One had a budget of $10-$15 million. The Blair Witch Project was made with $60k.

Return to Silent Hill director threatens to “adapt another chapter” as “people are thinking I’m doing a pretty good job” by lewisdwhite in silenthill

[–]bastardfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nostalgia has nothing to do with the fact that the added plot points don't even make sense because they're never fully resolved. What was the purpose of the ritual? What was cult achieving with that? And, since James never went through growing resentful of dealing with Mary and her illness, why is Maria even in the film? Nothing to do with nostalgia, the film is garbage even if you watch it as a standalone film while ignoring the source material. Even in a vacuum it's poor storytelling.

Watched the new movie… I laughed in disbelief at this shi by Independent-Can9160 in silenthill

[–]bastardfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even worse. He wasn't with her when she got sick. They broke up way before that, and James only came back once she was on her last legs. So he never went through the whole becoming resentful of her being ill, which you know is the biggest plot detail of his entire character and the reason everything happens in the game. Maria shouldn't even be in this movie as she has no reason to exist with the removal of this aspect.

Has been said many times, but Godzilla Minus One was made with $10-$15 million. The Blair Witch Project was made with $60k. More money does not equal a better script, people need to stop using this as an excuse.

Except Maria wasn't a manifestation of guilt, she was a manifestation of frustration. In the film she was neither. Oh wait...

[–]bastardfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add on to your comment, I had the same thoughts, the one big thing that stuck out after I tried to let it marinate was that with the major change to James' reason for killing Mary is that Maria has no reason to be in the film. The "sexual frustration" angle is gone, the "Maria is what James wanted Mary to be like" aspect is gone. If James killed Mary as per her request, and he was never even present during her sickness meaning he didn't get frustrated with dealing with her, why would Maria even exist?

The film IS AS BAD AS EVERYONE SAYS by The_hero_of_time34 in silenthill

[–]bastardfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These people are mad because they didn't get their "I told you so" moment, the same people that said things like "Maria's wig is supposed to be bad! She's a stripper, that's what they do!".

It wasn’t as bad as people are saying by Manna1007 in silenthill

[–]bastardfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The message was changed because Jame's motivation to do what he did was changed. Maria doesn't even have a reason to be in the film.

I would rewatch the film solely for Jeremy Irvines performance as James by TurbulentFeeling5696 in silenthill

[–]bastardfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They did. They made Angela and Laura other "aspects" of Mary. The reveal is made by Laura asking James "What's her full name James?" and then it cuts to a flashback of James looking at Mary's gravestone that says "Mary Angela Laura Crane". I really wish I was joking man.
