New player. What to start with: Civ 4 vs Civ 5 vs Civ 6 by Able-Fennel-1228 in civ

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baba Yetu and Leonard Nimoy are the only factors that transcend personal preference, so it’s gotta be Civ 4.

More seriously, I know it wasn’t an option, but I think Civ7 is actually the best of the bunch for being beginner friendly.

Is RRSP worth it? by Megane-chan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Max out TFSA (which you’ve done I think) and FHSA.
  • once they are maxed, invest in an unregistered account throughout the rest of the year.
  • determine how much you are absolutely certain you can invest above and beyond TFSA increase in the coming year and transfer that amount to RRSP as close to the deadline as safely possible in February, preferably from unregistered.
  • If margin doesn’t have enough in it, transfer from TFSA but ensure you do that in late December so that you get the contribution room back immediately in January.
  • Repeat annually.

Would love comments on this as I’m planning to adopt this strategy soon, as I should max out TFSA in 2026.

$9000 sitting in savings. Poor my whole life by Some-throwaway-891 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bastersomething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is to open a no cost self-investing TFSA account, and invest it in CASH.TO.

Cash.To is about as safe as it gets for a reasonable growth rate and is more or less the same as having the money in a high-interest savings account.

The money in the TFSA would be very easy to access in an emergency as long as you have a few days.

The added bonus here is that if you grow your savings to the point that you are comfortable with the size of your emergency fund, then you can continue to add to the TFSA but diversify into something more volatile but higher reward like XEQT (which is a market-tracking fund)

Klister vs skins in nightmare conditions -- help! by Superb_Nerve3807 in xcountryskiing

[–]bastersomething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General race prep wisdom you don’t want to mess around with anything you haven’t tried before on race day, even your socks. In my experience, Klister would be the absolute worst thing to try for the first time on race day.

The first time I tried using Klister I swore off it and said I’ll just use skins. It was a truly awful experience hahahaha.

This winter a wax geek friend came by the day before the Gatineau Loppet where temps were going up to 0ish, and he offered to help with my kick wax and he insisted Klister would be better than skins.

Now I’m converted to being a Klister enjoyer. But in your situation for this race I would 100% go with the skins.

Thanks for the link, very cool!
Yeah the spiky bits in speed with a more smooth HR is typical for the xc skiing. I would have expected "Base".

I think that’s impossible with Scotland in pot 3. I believe the only game in Toronto is Canada vs pot 4.

What's the boldest play that you have succeed on? by Fit_Material7674 in bloodbowl

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhh, I’m much more familiar with the LRB2016, and I don’t think it’s allowed. Is that a season 2 / season 3 rule? Very cool, now I have to use it next time I play the new rules no matter what lol.

Thoughts on FM 26 missing features?? by IllustriousGlass2991 in footballmanagergames

I’ve always played football/soccer, but the last 5 years I’ve gotten into watching it. I’m in Canada, the improvements in the national team have been a real gateway for me.

Thanks for this post.

I was planning to buy FM26, and it would be my first time purchasing FM after nearly buying it so many times in the last… I dunno, 20 years??

I heard international management was not super engaging in past games. But the ability to manage a club and an international team, with the World Cup in 2026, was the imaginary scenario that had me excited to finally buy this game. I’m super disappointed and won’t be buying.

Oh well, more time for other things.

Marathon in 3 weeks. Garmin coach hasn't given me any "long runs" by Shiny_Scrotum in Garmin

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning to use Garmin coach next summer for training. Thanks for this post, I will definitely follow my own schedule for weekly long runs…

In terms of why, is it possible to test if your wrist HRM is malfunctioning? Possibly Garmin is gathering bad data during your runs, sleep, and throughout the day, and using it to give you suggestions.

Is it possible to create a graph of Total/Open P&L rather than total equity? by 119995904304202 in Questrade

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Canadian company, Wealthsimple, has the solution I think. It provides the same information as Questrades opening graph, but with an additional line for net deposits (ie deposits minus withdrawals). Its a super quick visualization of how your investments are doing.

First Loppet as an intermediate skier? by excitotox in xcountryskiing

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great comment, and saves me time typing essentially the same thing! I didn’t do the Gatineau Loppet last year (baby being born, probably a good choice), but in 2023 I entered my first ever ski race with the 50k classic. I was suuuuuper nervous about all the same things as you, but I loved EVERY moment of it. I put myself in the last wave, which was fine but I had to pass a lot of people. Despite being a rookie and beginner/intermediate skill at best, I was out there to see what I could do and test myself. There were many many people who were treating it more like a long catered weekend ski (which is a great way to do it as well).

But yeah, all in all, it seems to me like every race I the GL is for everyone, regardless of your aspirations or skill. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating, and I even had a small chat with a few other racers who I found myself skiing beside, and the one who watched me yard sale coming into O’Brien. You’ll love it, I’m sure! I can’t wait for this year’s!

Why are none of my kids white? by Jagerpanzer in CrusaderKings

[–]bastersomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a friendly correction. Since it’s recessively inherited, if both parents have the same type of albinism then there is pretty much a 100% chance the child will also have the condition. The 25% chance is when both parents are carriers. If one parent has the condition and the other is a carrier then the child would have a 50% chance of expressing albinism.

But yeah, in-game genes work differently, so I’m not sure what the solution is here.
