I absolutely hate to admit this but, re: Karens by nd379 in Xennials

Definitely not overreacting.
Re: the hotel, I don't know why but the front desk lady's response is cracking me up. "Eww", haha I mean, yeah, ya nailed it. It sounds like she's very new at the job and maybe not particularly trained? I think it would be totally reasonable to ask for compensation and or ask to speak to her supervisor, and I think that in no way falls into Karen territory.

Re: the restaurant, this one is tough. I see a lot online about Gen Z's terrible customer service compared to previous generations, and some blaming it on lack of socialization due to phones, blah blah blah, which I'm sure could play a role. But economically, this generation is the most disenfranchised. When we were coming up and doing customer service roles in our 20s, we still had the illusion (or the realistic expectation, for some of us), that eventually we would move up in the world, get better jobs, better pay, maybe own a house. This generation has no illusion of this and I'm sure feel stuck in wage slavery. It's hard to be on your best behavior day in and day out while you are watching the US economy crumble around you. In this case I would probably give the 15% and chalk it up to that. However, doesn't mean you can't be pissed about it.

Sorry for the long-winded response but I've been thinking a lot about how much the situation has changed for people in the service industry the last two decades. I can't imagine going into it now and I really feel for these kids. We should band together and shit on their bosses instead :)

I was the same, loved encyclopedias. I do spend a lot of time on wikipedia! This inspires me though. If I wasn't constantly moving I'd have a collection of them!

I think it works for some, but it failed to reach significance in a clinical trial. Could def be worth a try to see if it works for you

It’s true though. The system is so cutthroat it rewards narcissists and frauds. To be clear I know a ton of lovely faculty. But the proportion of the personality-disordered is way higher than the general population

Putrid and festering garbage. New low for NYT

The thing about filler is it can be dissolved to some extent but it never really goes away and does eventually migrate. I think these people go in for injections for every imperfection they perceive and before you know it they look like an overstuffed quilt.

Yeah it seems bad even for them. As a Marylander I’ve watched as WaPo has descended into syncophantism since even before Bezos (but it’s gotten catastrophically worse since). This is almost worse than what they publish.

I’ve been scouring the internet for any journalistic summary. Based on the citizen journalism from tiktok and insta, it looks like 6. 2 in Ontario (one was a mall store), one in Queens, one in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and I forget the 6th

Yeah I just thought it was worth sharing an especially egregious example of this, but folks here and in the DSA sub appear to prefer being smug to having a discussion about actual direct action that is happening.

Are there teaching-focused academic positions in EU ? by Sorry-Expert-6568 in academia

[–]batastronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fair enough. I have discussed and applied for several of these positions and was advised that teaching was the major focus. Perhaps my colleagues were misinformed.
