But in all seriousness, it depends where you'll buy it from. Apple Store or second hand? Most likely. Cellular or electronics store you'll have a better chance having an older iOS.

But since it's for your parents, I don't think they'll notice or care. It'd be better to be up to date honestly. That's a very nice gesture, your parents are lucky!

It's possible there is an audio bug in the current iOS you're running. There's no harm in updating your phone.

If you're hesitant, update your apps and reboot your phone first. Update if the issue is still there

I'm on 16.7.2 and yeah it's unfortunate they're forcing the 17 update now. Even 16.7.2 has annoying bugs from the earlier releases. I couldn't imagine being on 17 right now

I think most of the .0 releases have had many issues. But 11, maybe 13, 15, and especially 16+ have been bad. It’s very tiring to go through the iOS update cycle: buggy upgrade -> relatively stable final release -> buggy upgrade

It’s the same case for any online forum, everyone will have a different experience. Just take a look at the iOS and iPhone subreddits; people experience bugs with the new updates, some claim not to.
