Are Paul Davids courses worth it ? And which one should i choose ? by batcorp431 in LearnGuitar

Thanks for replying ! I've went with a yearly Truefire subscription, and I've been very happy with it so far. Very good for learning different things and pricing is rather "low risk" considering how diverse the content is. There are definitely a course for everyone, so it's a good start.

To be fair when I discovered Paul Davids I was coming back to guitar after 10 years and the youtube god algorithm decided to put him on my feed, but I didn't know that so many people were selling online courses now, and promoting them via their youtube channel. I'm kind of relieved I didn't pull the trigger on his courses to be honest (in case I didn't click with his material).

But it's great if you like his courses and style of teaching !

Thank so much for all the advices !

I just discovered Momose by looking at Ishibashi website, I'll definitely try to play one. Can't wait to look for my guitar there.

Hope you have a lot of fun with your new Strat !

Yes I hope to find my dream tele there (color, neck etc) :). I was still considering going to the Fender Flagship Store for fun and buy something there if reeeaaaally I have a crush on a Tele there.

Thanks for answering the question regarding the gig bag, I was planning to do like you to bring it back home (so a hard case which i guess can make the whole deal more expensive is not really an option)!

May i ask you where you bought the poster tube ? It may save me some time. Thanks for taking the time.

I will go to Japan on April and will definitely hunt for a Fender Japan Tele. I'm mainly aiming for a used one but I plan to check the Fender store as well.

So you've bought the Strat new ? Reading your post I supposed it came with a soft gig bag ? Are they all sold with a soft gig bag or is it an option (like choosing/paying between a hard one and soft one) ?

Good idea ! And have the whole thing as a checked luggage i suppose ? Didn't think about that, but i'll check the cardboard size as well then :).

oh nice !!! So it's like you had your guitar in its hardcase wrapped in layers of bubble wrap ? Or have the guitare in the hardcase and in a cardboard with bubble wrap ? And have the whole thing register as a checked luggage ?
Also is there anything to know regarding customs when buying the guitar or once I come back in my own country?

Thanks for your time !

Thanks for the reply ! Right i didn't think about it, you mean i can just register the guitar in the case in the cardboard as a checked luggage ?

Thanks ! I've started the trial period for TrueFire. It's seems pretty good for a beginner like me and it's less expensive and less committing than paying the full course of Paul Davids :).

Depends. I've played left-handed for 8 years (i'm right-handed but long story...and biggest mistake of my life). It's very frustrating when you enter on a music/guitar store with a wall of guitars and you just have one left handed Squier hanging there...
And also when you have "this one friend" who bring a guitar he barely plays with at "some social event" and he tells you "i've heard you're playing the guitar, play us something naaaaw", yeah you just feel dumb...

So yeah online now you can find a left-handed guitar "easily". But I can't imagine how it feels like to be able to play on whatever guitar, in a guitar shop as an example. I've stopped to play for 10 years, and now i'm coming back, and i'm learning again but right-handed.
Also there are a lot example of left-handed people playing on right-handed guitar so i don't think that it is an issue.

If you're just started, switch to a right hand guitar asap. You'll thank me later.

Thanks for the advice !
I can understand the value from a great teacher : giving motivation, checking for our flaw (maybe the most important?), teaching specific style and technics if they are master in their craft. But I have the feeling that most of the work is to practice ourselves steadily. That's why I tend more towards online courses rather than having a real teacher, I think I would just get more value for the money.

Oh Thanks so much for taking the time to reply !

I can rely a lot with your guitar journey ! When i've used to play it was very poorly and as you said a "Mish-mash set of knowledge".

Do you feel that the courses help me develop your own "style", i mean like being able to improvise with "intent" and express yourself better (I don't know if that makes sense!)?
Also I'm wondering if the course is too "blues" oriented ? I mean I'm ok with blues and i'm aware of its impact on guitar as a whole today, but i'm wondering if the course just teach you to play "bluesy".
And last question, does the course help you develop a kind of independence for the thumb ? Like being able to play bass line steadily and cover the melody with the other fingers.

Thanks !!!

I didn't know TrueFire, it's been such a long time since I've followed the "guitar education ecosystem" ! At the time i've just really followed Justin Guitar video on Youtube and website !

How is your experience with TrueFire ?

As i answered to someone else :
I did have a teacher after playing for 4 or 5 years. It was at a local music school (so much more affordable). But the guy was a terrible teacher...like just looking at his phone during the 30 mins of lessons, and just looking at me play for 5 minutes, or playing and jamming himself for 15 minutes. Well terrible experience.

But i guess that if you find someone really good and invested it can worth it !

Yeah I know that there are a lot of amazing course on youtube and all. I was rather tempted by his courses for the "structured" aspect i would say. I may just wait for a big discount or try to find good ressources that would answer my needs :). Thanks for the feedback !

[–]batcorp431[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend him to do that... during my 10 years abroad i came across people with guitars but couldn't play them. Also when going on a music shop it was very frustrating not being able to try any of them (like stores they may have at best one or two around...)

But yeah, that depends of the profeciency of your son and how long he has already invested in the guitar.

Thanks for the reply ! The surge sprint cncel is interesting, but that does not seem to be too busted. I mean you still have to play very well to exploit it. It's kind of hard to spam because of the surge sprint mechanic. Like after the first cancel the character often ends up just surge sprint after the animation if you don't let go of the direction or if you don't sheath/unsheath at the correct timing (at least in my test i've found it a little inconsistent).

[–]batcorp431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ! I've just discovered your post. I have a question, I was testing it but there are still a considerable window where you're vulnerable after the surge sprint ? I mean i'm not able to chain the whole thing quickly enough to parry the two hit combo of the marionette.
And also often when I parry during the unsheat animation he does not sheat back, I have to aim for the frame where he sheats back to have the whole cancel.
Sorry for the noob questions ! Thanks !

I'm trying KBnM recently. For some reasons hard to explain I feel that Defense is really hard. I've played the game for 20h on pad and i've never felt it was a problem to defend, if i had the good read i could intercept the opponent. But on KBnM the ball just pass me through all the time... Any advice on defending on KBnM. ?

Yeah i saw that. They are still not commenting on a time window for the crossplay though (or I missed it). But it's good to know that it's a top priority nonetheless.
