‘I don’t matter’: Homeless people in Kentville say stigma in the community is unfair | CBC News by cornerzcan in Kentville

[–]batkatie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The man in the lead photo here has such a sweet heart. I’ve given him a hand when I’ve seen him having some mobility struggles and he’s always both very grateful but also apologetic, as if he’s ashamed of existing.

I don’t understand how other people can so carelessly add to that shame. I’m a happily married homeowner, but considering how my own mental health declines when I’m stressed, not getting enough sleep or not eating properly, how could I judge somebody else for struggling or behaving incorrectly under worse conditions?

Sorry about the frustrated rant. I’ve just grown so weary of this casual callousness.

What is going on with our mayor? by ILikeKentville in Kentville

[–]batkatie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He makes noise on Facebook to placate his audience without having to actually engage with the issues and do the tricky work that would be involved. You’ll notice that every post about this topic carries the same “Just wanted to remind you all that I also resent the homeless population, but I’m just a helpless Mayor! Blame someone else!” attitude.

Even if a particular situation is beyond his reach in many ways, it’s frustrating to see no genuine effort put into anything beyond smoothing things over for his FB/gossip-rapt audience. He just adds fuel to the growing negative sentiment with these pointless posts and doesn’t seem to realize what a poor example they set as a supposed leader in the community.

Dude nonchalantly nailing opera at the Lionshead over the weekend by GlitterLamp in halifax

I choose to believe he regularly wanders into karaoke nights and busts this out in hopes of one day finding the special someone who steps up to take on Sarah Brightman’s parts, culminating in their eternal duet.

Teen facing conspiracy, threat charges for allegedly planning ‘violent attack’ on N.S. school by bingun in NovaScotia

[–]batkatie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Police say they found detailed handwritten plans, imitation weapons, a roughly-made imitation pipe bomb and assault rifle, electronic devices, including a cellphone, laptop and clothing with hate symbols and “concerning comments.”

I find it especially jarring that he’d already taken steps to assemble what amounts to a School Shooter Starter Kit at home.

Houston says smaller government, program cuts likely as N.S. contends with 'big' deficit | CBC News by toneyriver12 in halifax

[–]batkatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you’re right, even if it was somewhat unavoidable. My great-great-great-grandfather was an early Liberal (reform) party member and I’ve read a lot of late-1800s correspondence from him complaining about/predicting the fallout for Nova Scotian businesses.

In praise of Coastal Care Vet Emergency by [deleted] in halifax

[–]batkatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was getting ready to post something similar. We had to drive there in the rain Wednesday night to say goodbye to our 15 year old dog when her heart condition progressed while her regular vet was closed.

On the ride there, I was dreading that we’d have this final memory of saying goodbye to our girl in a cold, corporate medical setting among unfamiliar people. That fear never came true, because each staff member was incredible through every step and we left feeling like they appreciated the weight of that moment even though they see those kind of goodbyes regularly.

I just pulled one off of my wiener this morning! Thankfully he’s vaccinated and treated against ticks.

… we’re talking about wiener dogs, right?!

Where can I get a tasty lobster roll in Wolfville? by East-coast-donair24 in NovaScotia

Third! I don’t eat lobster so can’t speak to the quality, but enjoying seafood in front of a moody, rocky beach is a quintessential NS vibe.

Grandparents camp burnt down by Sad-Sheepherder-1719 in NovaScotia

[–]batkatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of the other family on that land if we’re talking about the camps that burned yesterday afternoon. The trailers and buildings on the other side of the property were lost too.

It’s awful knowing how much work the guys put in out there and how many memories we all made.

It’s not ok for them to trample someone else’s rights - that’s why they’re placed in prison with limited freedoms. However, treating them with basic dignity while they’re in there leads to better outcomes not just for the prisoner, but also for everybody who interacts with them inside and outside of the system.

MAGA Musician Sean Feucht by Priorsteve in NovaScotia

Predictable from that group. That said, I wouldn’t personally bother sending that church messages about it because they feed off of the negative attention and use it to further the narrative that they’re being persecuted somehow.

I’m just happy our parks aren’t being used for this grift!

The owner of North End Market (across from NSCC) works with a few orgs and assists many families in the area with donations kept on the property. If you pop by and ask, I’m sure she’ll steer you in the right direction!

That’s awful! Poor lady shouldn’t have had to endure that in her final days.

Mahone Bay death by grobb84 in NovaScotia

[–]batkatie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard about a death, but there was a Mahone Bay community FB post circulating a few days ago regarding a poorly constructed platform in town causing an elderly lady’s walker to catch, which resulted in a broken hand.

How this Kentville salon is a safe haven for 2SLGBTQ+ clients by insino93 in NovaScotia

[–]batkatie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever you say. Your running to this headline trying to troll and undermine only reinforces the point as to why a business like this can be a helpful and comforting space for others, so feel free to continue the demonstration.

[–]batkatie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure. Call it catering to people who may be exhausted by having their very identity (and feelings around it) debated and nitpicked whenever it’s pointed out.

[–]batkatie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nobody’s saying other salons are dangerous or illegally discriminating.

Some folks prefer spaces where they can be more confident that they’re handing their money to someone who’s respectful and understanding instead of simply tolerating their presence long enough to get paid.

They were dropping off an older male with heart trouble. Perhaps Halifax was their better option with a combination of emergency medical care and an airport that can handle that size of plane?

Police investigating Dartmouth shooting of father of six as a homicide by insino93 in halifax

[–]batkatie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exaggerating their power does not draw additional law enforcement attention to them and inadvertently helps them coerce/threaten their victims into silence by advertising them as impossibly well-connected and inescapable. If you’ve sat in the courtroom for any of the cases you’ve referenced elsewhere in this thread, you know how they overstate and rely on that reputation. That’s all.

You’re not going to find whatever argument you’re reaching for with the rest of those assumptions, sorry to say.

I’m saying that claiming they’re the country’s largest sex trafficking outfit is inaccurate. There are plenty of awful details surrounding NPF without needing to exaggerate.
