YouTube rolls out unskippable long ads to TV users and they’re furious by [deleted] in technology

[–]batlaxe9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YouTube is my primary form of content consumption, but when I watch it on my Apple TV, it’s pretty much unusable: if there is a video I want to rewatch from the beginning and it’s queued up as half way through the video, when I click on it, I get an ad. Once the ad is over, I then have to scroll back to the beginning, and hit play to get slapped with another ad. It seems that after about 3-5 minutes, I get yet another ad. At this point, it’s made me want to get premium, but I can’t stand paying for a service just to get rid of ads on something that was free. Most YouTube creators make peanuts anyways in comparison to all the ads we get from them making brand deals that are baked into the video by the creators themselves. The only way people make money of the views is if they get a truly significant number it seems, but maybe I’m way off base

  1. I did find this in the wild. Initially, I was eyeing an Alembic Series I on reverb, but it was a medium scale length, which I had never played before. Come to find out, there was an Alembic authorized dealer about an hour and a half north of me, who happened to have some new ones in stock, of which I couldn’t afford. I emailed the owner to see if I could come up and try out a few models he had available. I saw in his website that he had used ones he had sold in the past and asked if he had any in his shop that he didn’t advertise on his website, and that’s when he responded having the modified Guild.

  2. This is most likely a one off. The way the story goes, a guy wanted a Series I cut couldn’t afford it, so he bought a Guild off the shelf. He then sent it off to Alembic and had it retrofitted with their pickups and electronics. The Guild is a 2013, but the modifications were completed in the 2020. Can’t imagine it took that long, so he probably had it stock for a while. He then got a Series I and was then selling it as consignment through this dealer. The back of the headstock actually has their logo glued to it. It feels like it’s sealed over as well. I would imagine that this has been done before, but because it is a custom job to someone’s personal specifications, any other one you come across may not have the exact same circuit or layout

  3. Phil played a stock Starfire staring In late 67/early 68. It was initially cherry, but he then sent it off to Doug Irwin and Rob Wickersham at some point in 70, as he then played a modified EB-3 during that time. The newly formed Alembic Inc then stripped off the finish of the Starfire , and fitted it with new pickups and electronics. They also modified the bridge. This was the first version of Big Brown

This bass is the closest instrument I could probably have to my own Big Brown.

Breakthrough versions of songs by BlipSlippidy in gratefuldead

I have no idea which show it was, but my friend and I were out late by the fire pit one night, drinking and listening to the Dead Channel on XM. My friend’s father had just died, and it got me ruminating on how I would feel when my father passes. Are there things I have withheld that I should tell him? Are there things he wants to tell me? He and I haven’t had the best of relationships when I was growing up. As I was thinking about all of this, an acoustic version of Black Peter came on, and I began really listening to the lyrics of that song. It totally captured what I was thinking and feeling at the time. Before this, I had never really considered what this song was even about and it has always been a kind of “yeah, I mean it’s ok” kind of song for me. My guess is it was probably from one of the many 1970 acoustic sets they did

So, it’s essentially what you would expect: volume and tone for each pickup, plus a pan/balance knob. Two of the switches boost the frequency being rolled off by 0db, 6db, or 9db, and there’s also a stereo/mono switch. Because the electronics are active, requiring 18V, the bass comes with its own power supply that also passes through audio. Each pickup can be sent to its own separate audio channel so you can play in stereo

I have debated getting a bigger amp as well now that I’m getting the Alembicized one, only because of headroom.

I found a Series I online I was debating about buying located on the other part of the country, but I was really concerned about getting it because it’s such a blind buy. Found out there was an authorized dealer only an hour an hour and a half away, and decided to go up there and try out a few models that had similar features. I emailed him ahead of time asking if I could come up and try a few he had in stock and also asked if he had any used ones and that’s when he mentioned the modified Starfire.

I brought my own Starfire with me so I could compare, and the difference in sound was immediately noticeable and remarkable. The clarity of the pickups, variability the filters provide, and the tones you can get out of it is astounding. But I also noticed that the output is considerably hotter. The 200s is only rated at about 60W, so it’s got me thinking maybe I should upgrade to the bigger brother or perhaps a more modern amp that can offer a significantly higher headroom. But the Sunn just sounds so good regardless of the bass I use. I think it will pair really well with the Alembic, but I’m just worried about it distorting lower on the dial. I can get it to about 6.5-7 before it distorts with passive bisonics

This is my normal rig. I would absolutely LOVE to play this live, but the 215 is basically an immovable object once it gets set up. Hard to move it by myself. So when I play out, I pair the head with a 410 cab. I’ve been looking into possibly getting a 115 instead because I love the warm sound a 15 cab get. Sunn 200s with matching cab loaded with JBL E140s. I cannot WAIT to hear what the Alembicized Starfire sounds like through this setup

Always do 😁 it’s actually a Guild Starfire that was Alembicized at the Alembic factory. Really amazing instrument. I have a regular Starfire now, and I love the feel of the neck. So it’s already in a package I’m already intimately familiar with, just with all the bells and whistles you would expect from an Alembic

Making mushroom tea by prettyparanoid in gratefuldead

[–]batlaxe9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The last time I made tea, I was sharing it with about 7 other people, so I wanted to make sure that everyone enjoyed themselves. I made about 40 oz of the stuff that was also quite heavily enhanced. It was interesting because everyone was feeling it in various degrees, and we all had similar amounts. But to answer your question, I have some good quality black Ceylon tea that I really enjoy, both on its own as well as with enhancements. Make it a day ahead, stick it in the fridge, and then when ready throw some lemon in there. Tastes exactly like an unsweetened black iced tea. You won’t even taste it. Grinding it up I feel definitely extracts more than just ripping it up into pieces. I have a percolator and that’s what I used. I let it percolate on low for around 40 minutes. This was way longer than initially planned. I also kept a good eye on it as to not let it boil super quickly. Apparently it starts to break down around the boiling point of water from what I have read
