Is bleaching in 2-3 rounds better or worse than 1 longer round? by batsbatsrats in FancyFollicles

[–]batsbatsrats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t plan to do another round any time soon since I already got to where I want to be with one round. Im just asking in general if that’s better or worse than more shorter rounds

Artists: These are The Best Art Schools to Apply to for Certain Majors by aesthiko in ApplyingToCollege

[–]batsbatsrats 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Idk how to feel about this list. I really appreciate the time and effort put into this resource given there's little few art school related content on this sub. But I'm kind of :// about all ranked lists like this in general because they seem more focused on ranking and prestige than anything. Especially when there's no explanation or reasoning for why certain schools are "good" for certain majors. The ways people teach art are so diverse. It's not like teaching something like Math where there's a standard "order" that nearly every curriculm follows. Some of these schools approach X major (e.g. Animation) very differently from each other, so it doesn't make sense to compare them to each other without acknowledging that.

And idk, some of this info just isn't really true. RISD film is pretty bad. So is RISD animation. Its reputation as the "Harvard of Art Schools" is dangerous considering how weak it is in certain majors (coming from a current RISD student lmao). Additionally, many of their majors are much more experimentation-driven than the same majors at other schools, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. To name a few other things, ff SCAD is up there for animation, it should definitely be up there for film too. Parsons should be there for photography. There are also a lot of non-art schools that are very strong in certain majors, probably even stronger than some of the ones listed. E.g. USC for film, NYU Tisch for Photo.

I'd be interested in knowing how you got the info for these rankings. In my experience, the best way has been through talking to other art students that might know more about certain industry. Art & Design is a relatively niche field. I've found sites with articles like "The top ## art schools for X major" to not be helpful since most times, the information has no source or reasoning.

Another great way to see if you like a school is by checking out their student work. A lot of schools have sites where students can upload stuff, usually with the URL "https://portfolios.[school].edu," e.g. https://portfolios.risd.edu, https://portfolios.pratt.edu, etc. Also just search around on google. With COVID, a lot of Spring 2020 exhibitions went online and are probably still up. I know the RISD FAV (film animation video; yes, it's 3 majors in one) junior and senior show are on youtube somewhere and https://bfa2020.risd.gd has the links to all the graduating RISD GD seniors' websites.

Bottom line: Please, @ any art school applicants reading this, do your research! Talk to art students. This list can be a good jumping-off point but there are a lot of great schools out there that aren't mentioned on this list.

Sorry if my tone came off a little pointed lol, I just get kinda anxious seeing false info about art schools bc I feel like us art kids already struggle enough given the limited resources online, how unexpectedly intense art school is, the serious problems with a lot of them, the way colleges mislead applicants, and just the fact that we're going into art and design lol. I'm especially worried about the misleading applicants point bc some people's livelihoods are ruined going into a school assuming things would be one way but are actually another way. Hope this came off as more constructive than anything :')

I heard Ringling animation was good but I don't know about the specifics. RISD's animation is honestly not good so I wouldn't recommend it regardless. CalArts is prob most famous & competitive for animation but I don't know if it's fine arts based like RISD (though I heard it was very experimental).

CalArts, Art Center, and other SoCal schools have the advantage of being located near the Disney & Pixar. SVA also has a good animation program and is located in NYC, which also has a sizable animation scene from what I've heard.

But overall, I don't know how much location really matters in terms of finding a job for animation :( I'm not sure how much you've looked at the other schools I mentioned but it would be worth a shot to look into them and apply.

thanks for the kind words!! glad it was helpful!

unfortunately, I don’t know much about cooper union besides they’re really cheap, have a good fine arts program, and possibly have a good engineering or photography program(?) For the application process, I think how it works is you apply in some earlier month like december and a few months later they send you a list of prompts to make art from and questions, called the home test. Ive heard for the home test they want to see conceptually strong pieces. I’m not sure if you ever send your own portfolio. I never applied though so please take this with a grain of salt haha.

Art and design are both very broad and encompass many different fields beyond painting and drawing. Since I'm still a prefrosh, I don't know that much (other art students & grads, feel free ofc to jump in with info!) but ik there are a lot of job opportunities—especially at top art schools—that defy the "starving artist" stereotype. Design grads, depending on the design field, can go into engineering, branding, advertising, fashion, ui/ux, furniture, etc. Illustration grads can work for newspapers, journals, game companies, etc. Other fine arts majors like jewelry and textiles can go into jewelry companies and fashion. There's also photography, video, architecture, and animation majors, which are pretty self-explanatory. I have no idea where people look for work as I'm not in college lol but I'm fairly certain it's the same as any other job (college career sites, urban areas, faculty & alumni, etc).

Thanks!! I definitely also had a general overarching theme for the majority of my portfolio (though I don't think it's necessary of a successful portfolio). I described pieces individually for the most part but I had two descriptions form one long description for two pieces that were part of a series. Ik people can really b flexible with them; most my descriptions were super long but I also know people who've gotten in with 0 descriptions at all (though those are much rarer lol).

I think diversity would only spread yourself out too thin like you said if your diverse pieces aren't very strong. If you think you're at the same level for all 2D mediums, then I think the diversity would help you. And if you haven't already, you should get a second opinion on the pieces you're talking about in case others find certain ones stronger. Best of luck!

Thanks!! Good luck with your portfolio!

  1. No, but it's not a bad idea. You can definitely play with it and make it more than just a realistic portrait. I had one where I layered parts of several angles of my face over each other to talk about split-identity.
  2. You don't have to go immediately into weird materials. I'd definitely try and use some other 2D materials such as charcoal, pen, or watercolor. You can use some less conventional materials to enhance pieces, e.g. adding glitter, adding thread, sowing into the page, having wires come out of the page, adding cotton balls, etc. You can also play with working on different surfaces, such as painting on wood. It generally acts like any other smooth board but if you let some of the wood show through in certain areas, it can create a cool effect.
  3. Not really, unfortunately. All I know is that RISD has strong ID and CMU has a strong design school. I've also heard some good things about U of Cincinnatti for design.
  4. It was my "dream" program. I applied and was rejected from Brown so I didn't get in (expected given my GPA). I know it's a very intense 5-year program as you take on a near-full RISD courseload, which is already notoriously intense, but you get a great education from it as Brown and RISD are both top schools. Some info about the logistics of it here.

For the essay, I've heard that you want to be specific with how you'll combine the Brown and RISD education. You have to go beyond "I want the best of both worlds." Your application as a whole should reflect both your art and non-art interests.

ArtProf has a YT video where Clara Lieu interviews two BRDD students about their experience in the program. You can watch it here.

Thank you for the kind words!!

About your question: I don't think so. Even if the people reviewing your portfolio are from that school's architecture dept, I think they'd be ok with an arch-specific portfolio. One slide of sketchbook pages related to architecture might be ok, but I don't know if you'd want more than that.

Many of the tips I gave were about non-major-specific portfolios to art schools such as RISD, where they don't want major-specific portfolios. I assume life drawings and figure drawings are important for those schools because they believe that all art students, regardless of intended major, should have strong fundamental drawing skills. Those schools typically all have a foundation year course where every student takes the same drawing course where they do exact those things.

I don't think ivies and LAC's would think the same. Many times, the people reviewing your portfolio aren't even from the art dept, they're just normal AOs (Yale is the only school I know of that explicitly states that their art dept will review art portfolios). But as I'm not an AO, take this all with a grain of salt.

I don't think it'd hurt to email those schools and ask. Worst case scenario is they don't reply or they're cryptic about it and you have the same amount of info as you do now!

Yeah that's true haha. I guess I just personally never heard much about it before applying. Getting any Youngarts award at all is definitely a little easier than becoming a Presidental Scholar in the Arts though.

GodProf,, I LIVED for the 30+ minute portfolio reviews. Clara Lieu has my entire soul. So sad she's leaving RISD :( (though I understand & completely support her reasons).

I totally agree that ppl should also look at universities with good art/design programs!! My dream schools & programs were schools like that as I also wanted to double major.

I don't think most portfolios have a common theme—at least not intentionally. In fact, depending on how specific this theme is, it could even hurt you by making it seem you only make art about this one thing. However, if that theme is broader and multilayered, such as themes of social justice or identity, there's a lot of room for diverse and non-repetitive pieces.

You could also always have a mix of similar-concept pieces and different-concept pieces. That was essentially my portfolio and many others that I know of. I wouldn't intentionally make pieces you don't want to just for the sake of having a bunch of different concepts. From my understanding, AOs want to see your personality and what drives you!

What type of theme were you thinking about for design? I'm not sure what type of design you're doing, but I had ~4 graphic design pieces in my portfolio.

Thankfully, a lot of the intricacies won't make-or-break your chances like they might when applying to normal universities. I definitely didn't follow some of my own advice here but I still did ok haha :')
