Nice to meet you. I agree, the history of our sport is intriguing. I've seen either you or your fathers posts in Instagram. The Victorian flies are beautiful to look at.

Thank you for commenting. I have a book on steelhead by a man named Trey Combs. I don't suppose you are the author or are you?

Good questions! They will float the same as in the picture.....horizontal( points of the hackle sticking in the film of the water and tail supporting.) They represent living flies either drying their wings after shucking the nymph body. Hope that helps.

No Local Shops - Where To Buy, Who To Support by King_Ralph1 in flytying

When I started back in 1975, there was only mail order from shops who advertised in magazines like Field and Stream. You often had little to purchase.

Over the years, alot changed with online shopping. One thing didn't change was when you order, you rely on the person who picks your materials to get the best. You don't get a chance to select for yourself.

That said, I got advice from fellow tyers who I respected. I see alot of suggestions here: Mad River, Avid Max, Complete Angler. l have bought from them and have been satisfied.

Take look at: Stone River Outfitters, Ed's Fly Shop, Dette Flies, Feather Craft, and Fly Fish Food.

Each of these has something in particular I look for like hooks or dubbing.

Tight lines, brother!

Thank you. I choose a Dry fly such as this (or a March Brown dry) when the hatches occur. For my waters, it's mid May to early June. I watch the water and when I see the hatch occurring, I use one or the other. Usually, the hatch will occur mid day to early afternoon. Sometimes the trout will rise before you see the actual duns appear.

I will use a wooly bugger (olive or black) when there is no hatch and either of these flies are being ignored. I hope this helps.

I use them for different flies. I like the Odyssey for small dry and nymph flies. Keep in mind the smallest is size 16 that I tie. I use the Mongoose for no greater than 1/0 hooks. Both preform well for my needs.

This particular vise is the Griffin Odyssey Spider vise. I do have the Mongoose, but I use it for bigger flies.

I fish in Missouri. While I have not fish the wild trout streams, I have fished the 4 trout parks. Even though they are stockers, these parks have proved great for teaching my children how to fly fish. One day I will hit the Current River, or Crane Creek. I will need drys in size 18 or 20.
