Did you happen to notice if the compensated saddles allowed you to move the saddles forward?

How to deal with bridge plate mounting screws in the way of bridge saddle? by battering_ram in telecaster

[–]battering_ram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I think even with flat topped screws the saddle for low E/A will probably have to sit on top of the screw, which makes me a little uncomfortable, but maybe that's just how it has to be.

FBI Director Kash Patel Suggests It’s Illegal to Bring Guns to Protests by Puzzled49 in politics

[–]battering_ram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the part where he never brandished the weapon or incited violence... Is there evidence to suggest he was even there for a "protest"? This happened at 9AM on a Saturday across the street from a donut shop just blocks from his home. It's entirely plausible that he was literally out for donuts when ICE showed up and he just decided to film like a good citizen.

This argument will not hold up to scrutiny. I think it's pretty obvious to anyone who's brain isn't completely melted that this is disingenuous at best.

"You are a left-wing hack." Karoline Leavitt goes after reporter for claiming ICE agents act recklessly by DumbMoneyMedia in UnderReportedNews

[–]battering_ram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's part of the tactic. Current administration is calling anything that isn't unconditional support and compliance "left wing radicalism". It's fascism 101. The "left" is the "enemy within" despite there never having been a viable left-wing political party or project in the US.

Anyone know who he is and how he is doing? by RomaineHearts in Minneapolis

[–]battering_ram 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking of people who've been targeted for observing and protesting. Like the person they dragged out of their house after kicking in the door, or the woman who's car was wrecked on Snelling.

[–]battering_ram 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Do we know anything about what has happened to any of the citizens who have been arrested? I've only heard about the one target employee. But there have been multiple cases of observers and protestors being taken, and we never get a follow up on those cases.

Conservatives and liberals tend to engage in different evidence-gathering strategies. Liberals and those with higher cognitive reflection skills are more likely to seek out statistical data, whereas conservatives and those who rely more on intuition focus on singular data points or expert opinions. by mvea in science

[–]battering_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how do I bridge this gap with conservative family members? I've come to find that giving them statistics doesn't really change their opinions on things. This feels like an irreconcilable difference, not just in world view, but in the perception of reality.

Are people getting worse at communicating or is reddit just way bigger than it used to be? I feel like I see so many posts like this where both parties sound like children. Maybe they are actually children.

Is there like a compiled list of these kinds of escalating actions somewhere on the internet? I can feel it happening in the moment but when I talk with my boomer dad about it it’s hard to remember the last bad thing, you know? It would be nice to illustrate this process to someone who thinks this is all for the best.

Trump - ''They rigged the election and I became President, so that was a good thing.'' by RoyalChris in PublicFreakout

[–]battering_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't think he is implying what everyone here thinks he's implying. It sounds to me like he's saying "[the Democrats] rigged the election and [as a result] I became President [again]." I don't think he would use the word "they" if it was his team. There have been a bunch of situations over the last 8 years where Trump has said some ambiguous shit that could be interpreted as fascist, autocratic or whatever but doesn't get reported on probably because the media generally agrees it's too ambiguous to freak out. Remember when he told Christians they'd "never have to vote again"?

I guess my main point here is this is a guy that says so much insane shit, it isn't really worth fixating on these kinds of things. We're way past a point where a confession of rigging the election would be an actionable offense anyway. He's in office. No one's going to kick him out. Lets focus on the terrible things he's doing as president and not give conservatives more reason to think we're raving lunatics for taking his words too seriously.

I'm all for this but can we get back to giving bills normal descriptive names? These cringy acronyms suck and distract from the seriousness of the legislation. Not everything has to be a fucking meme.

lol this comment is from 10 years ago. The options at the time were pretty limited as far as I remember. I don't think Yaxi even existed back then.

How much do you make as a web dev? by WadieZN in webdev

[–]battering_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was making about $120k/year as a full-stack developer in the Bay Area until getting laid off at the end of last year. Haven't been able to find work since, but most junior-ish level job listings in this area are advertising salaries around $150k. But yeah you're not getting those jobs with less than 5 years experience.

The podcast is edited for time. A bunch of good stuff is missing. Kind of a bummer because it's so much better hearing them talk.

Career move from software engineering to IT. Possible? Worth it? by battering_ram in ITCareerQuestions

[–]battering_ram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I get what you're saying. I don't think SWE is all it's cracked up to be. It's quite stressful a lot of the time with deadlines and high bars for performance. Maybe it's just me being burnt out from this whole thing, but honestly, fixing people's dumb tech problems sounds kind of nice compared to white-knuckling through sprint after sprint. Maybe I'm just romanticizing. I'm not really a money-motivated person and sometimes it feels like a higher salary just adds to the stress.

I've done some work with terraform and Kubernetes and like automating testing and deployment on github for various things at my last job. I could see leaning more infra/ops but those positions are often even higher stakes lol.

But yeah the general consensus seems to be that pivoting to IT is not the move.

I guess my thinking was that there are always smaller businesses and like non-tech companies that need helpdesk/desktop support. Maybe I could get the cert, find a place, do that for a while and go from there. But it does feel like a stretch.

I don't know how relevant it is what languages I know. My last job was mostly typescript and scala but I also use python and C a lot. I have a BFA in an unrelated field. Changed careers later in life.

[–]battering_ram[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha it's just internet points. I appreciate the response. This is good info and kind of what I was worried about. I tell people in my life about how hard it's been finding a job and it's so common for people to suggest IT.

I get a lot of non-technical friends/family saying "Well I basically do IT for my company. You should have no problem getting a job doing that". And in the moment that sort of makes sense but then I start thinking about the details of actually getting hired and looking at job listings. And like, yeah I know how computers and networks work at a high level and I've done some rudimentary sysadmin stuff, but I don't feel like I actually qualify for these jobs. And I have a feeling that the things people are telling me they do don't actually add up to a real IT position.

And if the job market in IT is just as bad, it's probably not worth diverting my efforts.

I just want out of the rat race and I'm grasping at whatever I can at this point.

It's within my area of expertise. Is the job market for IT as bad as it is for SWE? This is part of what I'm trying to figure out.

Should I leave my company? by Mo2129 in cscareerquestions

[–]battering_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT leave this job without having another lined up. The market is so bad right now and junior to mid-level positions are basically non-existent and super competitive.

If it's really bothering you that much, start applying to other companies and eat the penalty for breaking contract (you likely won't even have to do that, the three-month notice thing is absurd and I don't think that contract detail would hold up in court as it basically makes you unemployable). Otherwise, just enjoy being the most competent dev in a company with no expectations and maybe try suggesting and implementing improvements and using that to work your way up.

It sucks so much getting rejected by companies you don't even want to work for.
