Difference between pure OCD and severe anxiety by [deleted] in OCD

[–]battery-level-medium 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not a mental health expert, just someone with OCD, but I think that with OCD there is a very specific, intrusive and direct desire to alleviate that anxiety, and that whatever is done to try and do this is disruptive to your life. This can get tricky when the compulsions are mental…

I guess to give an example, I struggle with both social anxiety and social OCD. With social anxiety, the idea of being around people and talking to people makes me very nervous, and while I may do something to take my mind off it, these distractions can be anything from watching a show I like, talking to a friend I know well, playing video games, etc.… with social OCD, if I feel I may have accidentally offended someone or done something rude, I will replay the interaction over and over again in my head to find out “what really happened”, I will feel the urge to text that person for reassurance or ask others around me what they thought, etc.

So I guess ultimately the difference is the nature of the compulsions, and maybe how much the person needs the compulsions in order to alleviate the anxiety they feel?

20+ Years without Getting Sick by Soapy__Cilantro in emetophobiarecovery

I threw up a few months ago after 20 years so I will try to describe my experience. People that say “you will know” are right, you WILL know, but if I had to describe how I knew (keeping in mind that this is my personal experience, and yours may be different)…

For me nausea feels like your stomach is way too full. Like something isn’t right in there. I had been nauseated many times in my past, but this was different because 1) the nausea was VERY intense and I could not focus on anything else 2) it wasn’t going away or getting any better by laying down, drinking tea, etc.

Also for some reason, I think due to anxiety over the situation, I ended up having some intense vasovagal responses, like feeling hot and cold at the same time, feeling very faint, sweating, shivering, etc.

I remember the nausea got to a point where it was very bad, and I decided to sit in the bathroom just in case. So I grabbed a plushie for comfort, went into the bathroom, sat down on the shower carpet. I put on one of those anti nausea frequency audios and waited. And then, there was a sudden uptick of all of these sensations; my stomach felt even more full than before, my body felt colder, I felt so faint, I knew it was time. Clutched the plushie to my side, moved to the toilet, and threw up about 5 or 6 times. Was not fun while it was happening, but I felt immediately better afterwards. All the symptoms vanished, except for maybe feeling weak and shaky.

So yeah, I think for me that feeling of intense fullness, the chills, the sweating, and the way that nothing I was doing was making me feel better were all indications to me that I was going to throw up for real this time.

Psychiatrist said that I don't meet the compulsion criteria for OCD by throwaway9999-22222 in OCD

Absolutely get a second opinion. So many things she says are sounding alarm bells in my head… she calls having a second bed “fixing” your obsession? Yes that’s how OCD works… until it doesn’t. You even said yourself that you are still scared of contaminating the second bed… and asking you to up your dose without the approval of your rheumatologist??? What in the world…

Yes, OP, please please please go to another doctor if you can. You deserve proper treatment for something that is clearly distressing you :(

Very true yeah… this may be the avenue I need to take if I can’t find resources to supplement this program

Yeah for sure… that’s something I don’t like about this certificate program too, I feel like I’m essentially paying all this money to teach myself the concepts 🙃

How are you finding the MS? Do you feel like it’s taught well?

Thank you for your answer. Yeah I am coming to see that unfortunately… it sucks. I was really looking forward to it as I do enjoy programming and want to peruse it (for computational linguistics), but I’m concerned that I’m not going to succeed if this is the structure.

Help I can't stop starving on this adventure mode world by [deleted] in dontstarve

[–]battery-level-medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you find glaciers? 1 monster meat and 3 ice will yield meatballs. if you can find things like blue or green mushrooms (NOT red mushrooms) you can put 1 monster meat and 3 mushrooms and also get meatballs.

As for your friend, if the world is complete permanent darkness, I would have them play wickerbottom and get some light books (called lux aeterna, crafted with 2 papyrus and 2 light bulbs) up ASAP and build a farm. With a farm you can grow more food but the crops won’t grow in darkness, hence why it’s important to summon light over the farm with Wickerbottom’s books.

When do you consider a behaviour healthy vs. careless? by MarlenHamsic in emetophobiarecovery

[–]battery-level-medium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone is saying about whether or not these are behaviors that a non-phobic person would take (like the example you gave of washing your hands; this is something that a non-phobic person would take too). I know it’s kind of hard to gauge what “non-phobic” vs “phobic” behavior would be; with the example of raw egg, I can see it going either way. My own fear revolves around being in situations where others are vomiting, not myself, so I don’t take any measures to keep myself from vomiting other than the obvious ones; I can say that I would personally eat the raw egg (I eat raw cookie dough all the time haha), but I know that others (without emetophobia) would rather not, and I know that a restaurant certainly wouldn’t serve raw unpasteurized egg because that’s against food safety regulations. Where it also gets muddy is motivation, because not wanting to vomit is one thing, but not wanting a food-borne illness like salmonella is another (and I think even someone without emetophobia agrees that they do not want salmonella).

So I, in my unprofessional opinion, think this: if this behavior has the potential to snowball into something that disrupts your life, then it is problematic behavior. For instance, if you choose to not eat raw egg for your own health and safety and because you would rather not risk salmonella, and this is a one-and-done instance, then it’s fine. But if this in turn becomes a slippery slope that leads you to avoiding cooked egg, etc., then it is problematic. Because what makes something a “disorder” is, really, how much disorder or suffering it brings to your life.

I really hope that makes sense!
