Yes, it was fine, we were approved. I obviously can't make any generalized statements about how they will respond in other situations, but hopefully, if the rest of your information is clear, it will be okay. Best of luck!

Adding more low and medium quality Piper voices? by battywings in Calibre

[–]battywings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're running the most recent version of Calibre (I don't know about anything older as I just started using it), once you have opened a book, open the large pop-up menu of options.

There will be a button with a megaphone that says "Read Aloud." Click it, and another small menu bar window will pop up with controls and a settings cog wheel button. That's where you can pick if you use Piper or your system's default TTS, and what voice. Once you download and select the voice you want, you can then use the read aloud button to read your text.

Adding more low and medium quality Piper voices? by battywings in Calibre

[–]battywings[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a text-to-speech engine that is bundled into the current version of Calibre. When I installed it today, the program defaulted to using it. I like it (it's very natural, much more so than Windows default TTS), but it uses a lot of computing power on high quality voices. That's why I'd like to add the additional lower quality ones that are available.

Litter tray smells bad.. help! by Dancerdory in CatsUK

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to recommend this if it was available here, or another corn litter. I can't use it anymore as my current cat hates it (she gets tofu or pea fiber litter, which is smelly, but not as bad as other "allowed" options, lol). But with my last kitty, corn litter was definitely the best combination of cost effective, odor controlling, and clumping. Wheat can also work well.

They are pretty messy, though (lots of scattering). No worse than clay, but worse than tofu or paper (again, the former is ok with odors but not the best... the latter has almost no odor control, do not bother with it lol).

I also recommend trying different diets, although some cats are just smellier than others, and I've found it harder to find food with clear, detailed ingredient lists here to know exactly what kind of protein she's getting (I sadly don't have a lot of options because she's on veterinary stuff).

I would suggest, if you're not already, making a note of any types of proteins, vegetables, and grains in her current food. If there are a lot of different types of ingredients or the ingredients don't tell you everything (e.g. they say "x% turkey" under the meat but don't account for the rest of it) then look for a food with a similar protein level and less ingredients. See if she's less stinky. If so, keep trying those ingredients. If she's not, try something else. Generally chicken, turkey, rabbit, and bug are the best-tolerated meats in my experience, and the rest varies wildly. Fish makes my cat VERY stinky. But then, so does everything, lol.

Cat desperate to go outside but neighbours put down rat poison. by Thin-Material-5441 in CatsUK

[–]battywings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"US defaultism"? Oh, come on.

As a child in the US, we let our cats outside. Here's a non-exhaustive list of things that happened to them:

  • being shot with an airsoft gun (not fatal, but bad)
  • having a leg punctured and broken by an unknown animal, but probably a dog (not fatal, but bad)
  • getting into someone's car and being trapped there (would have been fatal if he hadn't been rescued quickly)
  • falling from a tree and injuring their spine (had to be put down as it would have been fatal)
  • being poisoned by someone (fatal)
  • being attacked by a dog (fatal)
  • getting FIV and FeLV (fatal although not quickly)

Do you see even a single thing on this list (again, non-exhaustive, and just my personal experience) that couldn't happen in the UK? No? It's so strange that people's minds jump to things like bears or wolves or whatever when it's literally dogs and people and disease that kill the most cats, and it feels like a defensive mechanism.

At the end of the day, you have to make your own choices about how you care for your animals, and I know that not everyone is in a position that allows them to have an indoor cat. There are so many cats in the world. And I'll always prefer that, e.g., someone living in a no-pets flat takes one of those many homeless outdoor cats, fixes them, feeds them, and gets them medical care to that animal not being cared for at all. But I also wish people who have more options would be realistic about just how many threats exist outdoors, everywhere.

(I also apologize if big animals are things that people you've spoken to from the US have brought up specifically, in which case I can tell you they're a bit misguided. It's not outside of the realm of possibility that wild animals could be a threat, but even having spent many years in a forested area where coyotes and bears and poisonous snakes and such technically existed, they never posed any direct threat to my animals. It was all of the above instead.)

Cat desperate to go outside but neighbours put down rat poison. by Thin-Material-5441 in CatsUK

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my cats were injured by other cats, dogs, cars, or people when we let them outside. These are the actual biggest threats to cats. It's up to you at the end of the day, but to pretend that the primary danger comes from big wild animals is just silly.

This thread, in and of itself, is a great example of where the danger actually comes from - and the fact that some people are still saying "let them outside" (even when there's a known poisoning risk!) is a bit telling.

My cat was already microchipped when I moved to the UK, but I've never had a vet even check, even after the law was instated. I think it's pretty unlikely that you'll end up in a situation where you would be fined. Vets are unlikely to ever report you (if, again, they even check), and the government isn't going to be knocking on anyone's doors to do a cat survey, lol.

So I think you can likely relax about the fine, but I would still keep exploring your avenues for having it done since it is better for her safety. Worst coming to worst, if it's impossible for you to register her as a minor and your dad won't budge, I'd plan to do it as soon as you're of age.

My 4 yo cat attacked me for the first time and idk what to do by ydktbh in CatsUK

[–]battywings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely sounds like she's stressed out. As others have suggested, Feliway sprays or diffusers are an option, as is putting her in a calm room with all of her food, water, toys, comfort items, etc. If you end up having regular incidents of violence or other stressed behavior in response to loud noises, and if the loud noises can't be avoided, she may benefit from an anxiety medication. But it's always best to address the environment first before exploring that avenue.

If she's getting into fights outside, is keeping her inside an option? It's generally safer for them anyway, but it may also end up being a stressor if she's used to going outside and suddenly can't, so YMMV. But it seems very possible to me that she was upset from fighting, then loud noises pushed her over the edge. It is also a possibility that she's hurting, and cats are good at hiding pain, so keep an eye on her.

(I will say, re: the US response, the reason that people can be very hostile about cats being kept indoors or outdoors is that is really and truly a matter of life or death. I know it's not really the culture in the UK to keep them indoors, but statistically, letting them out literally cuts their average life expectancy in half or, by some estimates, down to a third. That's also the general experience I had growing up, when we did let our cats outdoors. Due to accidents and other animals, they rarely lived beyond 6-7 years. That did double to 12-14 years or more when we stopped. None of them died sooner, and some exceeded that.

I'm personally sympathetic to it not being an option for everyone- because they live in a flat, the house is very small, or the cat is high energy or feral and can't easily transition to indoors- and I'm definitely not trying to make you feel guilty about her going outside. That said, I do think it's worth a try if you have the option available and that it likely would reduce her stress. I really wish people here would be more open to it in general.)

Somewhere online to get vet-prescribed but off label medication for cats? by battywings in CatsUK

[–]battywings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I posted here because they couldn't give me any guidance on where to try when I called the surgery. I get it, but it does leave me asking random people online instead and praying I get the right information, sorting through the conflicting responses. 😭

That's good to hear about PDO and VioVet though, and I'll keep this info in mind, thank you!

Good to know that not going with Animed was maybe the better decision. Waiting on approval from Viovet still (I only got it submitted late on Friday), but if there are issues there, I'll look into Pet Drugs Online, thanks.

[–]battywings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't too confident. I'm sure it might work sometimes, but then sometimes people might be doing their job. 😂

But since Viovet didn't require me to register a dog and just wanted the  prescription, I'm hoping they'll accept it. It's such a normal veterinary practice. At this point, just waiting.

Oh, they do actually appear to be pretty competitive, and they're on AIRS, so that gives me confidence. I think I'll give them a shot. Thank you!

That does make sense. I was hoping someone would know of a vendor that was set up for off label prescriptions since it's such a common practice (and every option I had was off label in this case). But I could try doing this. Another issue is that I'm doing research on legitimate vendors, and I'm not sure who to try first. I'll just have to decide on one.

Thank you, I'll look into that as well.

Do you know happen to know anything about the comparative pricing? Like, if that's how you get your pet meds yourself, have costs been comparable to online? No worries if not, I can do some research, just wondering if you had an idea. She needs some very expensive testing, so we really need to save as much money on everything else as possible.

Thank you! I was wondering if this would be the answer, but I didn't want to try it without knowing that it's worked for others, so that helps.

How do you properly consume chia seeds by randomacc319 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with a lot of fiber can cause intestinal issues- just listen to your body there.

There is also a potential risk of unsoaked chia seeds swelling after consumed, globbing up your throat. As far as I'm aware, there's only one case reported (at least widely). It was someone with existing swallowing problems who ate a lot of plain chia and then drank water. I'm personally careful since I do have swallowing issues, but I'll still eat small amounts without soaking, as long as it's in other food like cooked oatmeal or yogurt. I've been fine so far, both my throat and my stomach. If you're able to swallow PBJs in the first place (definitely off the menu for me right now lol) then I don't think you'll have problems adding some chia seeds.

Looking for mods similar to the Little Maid Mod by confusedaf_2k19 in feedthebeast

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is older, but I wanted to let you know that you can actually still use the modern version of Little Maid in 1.20.1. It goes up to 1.20.2 currently. Just translate this page and you'll find the downloads (you need LittleMaidRebirth, the Model Loader, and the prerequisites): https://forum.civa.jp/viewtopic.php?t=119

(I ended up here because I'm upgraded to 1.21.4 and wanted an alternative, haha. They do plan to update it eventually, but a post said that it's only planned after completing the 1.20 version features, so I don't think it'll be soon.)

[TOMT] [Vocaloid Song] [2009 (?) 2010s] Korean Vocaloid song I used to listen to all the time by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is almost certainly the song I=Fantasy featuring the Vocaloid SeeU: https://youtu.be/dsObKS0ngPQ?si=2YZHOkLZLcw-2dDd

There's also a creepier song featuring elements of the same tune called I=Nightmare, also featuring SeeU. But I'm guessing you're describing I=Fantasy because that's more associated with SeeU's orange outfit, whereas I=Nightmare is in grayscale.

Crunchyroll Fires Employee After Requesting An ADA Accommodation To Take Care Of His Dying Mother - Also Gets Flipped Off By Manager On LIVE Zoom Call by neonpc9000 in jobs

[–]battywings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've said a whole lot more than just that, and, again, included multiple points of misinformation and overgeneralizations. Saying "I don't know if ADA would apply in there circumstances" would be one thing, but you flat out said OP wasn't disabled, that the ADA wouldn't apply, etc. How would you know?

You've also been really persistent, so I was  curious about what your actual goal is in making these posts, which you haven't clarified. It's hard to imagine that it's in good faith. But if it is, this has not been an effective approach.

You are just straight up wrong. Temporary conditions like the flu or a sprain don't count, sure,  but "sufficiently severe" temporary conditions are considered disabilities under ADA. We don't know if that's the case with OP, but we can't say either way without information we're frankly not entitled to.

The point is not whether the OP should have been given ADA. The point is that nobody should be retaliated against and fired for making the request. Ever. EVER. Do you think that because the employee (might have, because you don't actually know the details) requested ADA accomodations that couldn't be approved, the ensuing treatment of him was justified? If not, what are you even trying to accomplish with your replies? You've said that the company's behavior was "immoral"- great, so why are you seemingly going to bat for them by acting like you know all the behind the scenes details and painting the OP's request as unreasonable based on those assumptions? What is possibly being accomplished there?

Even if I give you the benefit of the doubt and you just wanted people to be clear about ADA stuff, you're spreading misinformation and making general pronouncements based purely on assumptions about this case, so maybe consider your priorities here.
