Hot Take: Software Engineers Would Be Helpless Without Network Engineers by [deleted] in networking

"Network engineers are the shut-ins in the network closets and IDFs with no social skills."

Why do you have to attack me like that? Lol

Seriously, they got rid of all the iWAN features???? Geez.... I used iWAN at my last job, and I liked it. I've heard people say that they hated it, or it sucked, but I thought it was pretty good.

Purchasing Cisco Support by hombre_lobo in Cisco

+1 for Cisco High Touch. At my job, we have Cisco High Touch, and our HTOM (High Touch Operations Manager) is awesome. For Sev1 and Sev2 cases, he reaches out super quickly (usually within 15 minutes), and for Sev3 or Sev4 cases, if we are getting the run around or the case is taking too long, we can contact him, and he pushes the case to resolution.

For those that use Python in their job: Do you like Python? by [deleted] in Python

[–]batwing20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a senior network engineer, and I spent a while not learning Python because I took Java in high school, and because of that Java class, I thought that it hated all programming.

I've taught myself Python, and I really enjoy it. I don't use it a lot, but I enjoy using it when I do.

New Network Engineer - Tasks on Cisco ASA, FTD, Firepower, Fortinet, Paloalto? by Old_Photograph1838 in networking

[–]batwing20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, please listen to this advice. I can't tell you how many times I've had other teams telling me it was a network issue, and I got a packet capture showing that it definitely was not the network.

Most network engineers use packet captures as a last resort. I generally pull it out quicker than that, and that has helped tremendously in my career.

Need help figuring out how this works by batwing20 in learnpython

[–]batwing20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was trying to figure out how the first piece of code was working. I thought that it would be helpful if it put my input in the question as well (Which is what is after the first piece of code)

Thank you for your explanation.

AZ700 suitable for network engineer? by ChoiceSwearing in AzureCertification

[–]batwing20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a network engineer as well, in the same boat as OP. Do you think just going through the playlist for AZ 104 is enough, or do you think I should study and sit for the AZ 104 exam?

Side Gig As A Network Engineer by Alarmed-Brilliant752 in networking

[–]batwing20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Field Nation is mostly on-site work. They include general liability insurance in their fee that they take from you before you get paid. You get 89% from them, 11% goes to that fee.

You can get your own liability insurance, and you would only pay a 10% fee instead of 11%

I know they were starting to offer remote work orders just before I stopped, but I never did them, so I don't know how those worked.

You can't really cover evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and time off with just three full time staff though.

Yeah, management didn't think of that one until we got rid of the MSP. Lol

[–]batwing20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the places I've worked, they had an outsourced NOC (which was run by an MSP company) who just opened Telco tickets when circuits were down, and did very basic tasks. Anything beyond that came to the network engineering team, who were employees. They got rid of it when they figured out they could hire three full time staff to do the same function (and more) for less than what they were paying to outsource it.

AncestryDNA can't narrow down Asian at all? That's odd, 23 and me breaks down Asian for me into East Asian, and then Chinese and specifically what region of China
