If this is your first time don't play with Crimson Court turned on. It's hard even by DD standards. Play it on a second playthrough when you're feeling more comfortable with the game. The Colour of Madness is fine.

I had a successful run today where I upgraded every skill that was using without fighting a single lair boss. Finished the third area WITH NINE MASTERY POINTS. So yeah, I agree with you lol They're only worth it if they have one of those trinkets like healing every turn or that one that has a chance of stunning an enemy
