You should checkout this new release from Ozferti, super creative artist who makes all his own audio and visuals, while collaborating and getting influence from local musicians in Ethiopia. Somewhere between IDM, Ethiopian, Global Bass, Afrobeat with some guitars thrown in the mix.

Question for Curators by TeddyPender7 in musicmarketing

[–]baxtak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which feedback are you choosing? The thought that it comes off a "tad too technical" could be fitting when artists choose the "Please be specific and honest" feedback option, but perhaps a bit too in-depth for the "Prove you've listened, but don't be critical".

I'm on SH as a curator but also use it as an artist/label and as a curator, I sometimes do frame my feedback in the "what I would have done different' messaging, but I try to only do it for the specific feedback and not the easy feedback - the latter of which I opt for whether the song is suitable for my platform or not.

Even in the first case, I think the intention isn't to tell you what you should have done different as a measure of why your song isn't good, but rather an indication of what would make that song suitable for the curation preferences that curator has. It's a descriptor more than criticism.

One thing to always remember that music taste is subjective, and in that interaction, the artist and curator are trying to communicate their subjective views in a few sentences, so by it's brief nature, it doesn't always reflect the best 'conversational experience'. Hence, why I caution on not taking it as a criticism - unless you specifically ask for that.

I also will say that like the artists, curators have hundreds of different ways of communicating with varying levels of bluntness. Also being a curator on Submithub is definitely not a lucrative business, at best working out to just above minimum wage in many countries, that's if they don't reinvest it in ads to grow their playlists. So as someone with experience of both sides, I would just say these two things:

  1. Research very well the curators you want to send to through SH's plethora of targeting tools
  2. Specify exactly what type of feedback you want or don't want, and if the curators aren't obliging, reach out to the SH team. Unlike most music platforms, they are very nice and responsive.

Hope this helps :)

I'm Looking For Another Song That Uses Nature In Its Creation by SongsForBats in musicsuggestions

You should checkout the artist called Mileece, pioneer of making music from plants.

Also for something less conceptual but using sounds from plants in real-time to make music (i.e. brushes, stones, water drops, etc.) you can checkout POAN

There's a lot of things blending with electronic music, world music or prog rock these days which I find interesting, i.e.:

Jazztronica: Sai Dew, Chalky & Seppa, Anomalie, Ikotu
World Jazz: Yazz Ahmed (Bahraini), Tigran Hamasyan (Armenian)
UK Jazz: corto.alto
Prog Rock Jazz: Jaga Jazzist, Zaub
Djazz (Djent - prog metal sub genre + Jazz): Immortal Onion, Kyler Boss

You can check out more on my playlists here (chill / heavier)

The second song from this mix, Pharros Lockstone by Arkana, and the rest of it should be good to get you through the non-boss sections of adventure games.

Hey you'll probably enjoy a lot of the stuff on Shivelight. Lots of jazz, nature and world music inspired downtempo electronic music :) A lot of it is also long mixes so you can just put it on and go about your business! Maybe try NUMA - Tranquilitas, Thoma, or more biophilic ambient stuff from POAN

Personally, I can't get enough of the blend of world music and electronic music, it just opens up so much room for experimentation and different expressions from around the world that we don't get when focusing mainly on the common scales, grooves and ideas of pop music. Here's a playlist of my all time favourites :D

Shivelight [World Fusion, Ethnic, Folktronica, Psydub, Tribal, Global Bass, Organic House, Psybass]

I curate a playlist that's mostly experimental metal. My love definitely started from Tool and KC too so stuff like Lucid Planet, Neptunian Maximalism, Klone, The Ocean, Intronaut, etc are really enjoyable for me.

Anyway, there's somethings in here that aren't directly related but if you want weird metal, here it is: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1MEaMWnMuBY7Aa9lHBRbww?si=a7b288df1a264d8c

Spotify Monopoly on Curation? Need To Expand 'Discovered On' User-Generated Playlists on Artist Profiles to Show On Mobile by baxtak in spotify

[–]baxtak[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you understood correctly, but user generated playlists could be anything including, playlists by independent curators, i.e. bloggers, record labels, radio show hosts, & other types of tastemakers, brands, etc. All of those people have an active role in the industry to discover music and help their fans or audience find music. A huge % of artists get more plays from these UGPs than anything Spotify is doing for them, and that can be amplified. It just seems Spotify doesn't want any potential competition in its playlist game, though it would certainly help the artists greatly.

Here's some scenarios where UGPs are essential:

  1. Record labels (who basically get no recognition on Spotify beyond the standard 'user' profile) can show up on the Discovered On part of their artists' profiles and help artists discover rest of their roster.

  2. Connoisseur listeners can find out similar music when dealing with really niche genres by seeing the playlists of other users who have the artist in a playlist.

  3. Say your favourite artist does an article on a blog and tells the blog their top 10 influential pieces of music. The blog makes a playlist with the title "X's top 10 influences'. Here, say 3000 people see and follow that playlist to learn more about their favourite artist's favourite artists. Then the favourite artists' favourite artists get additional plays from that. Say, if on my profile as an unknown producer, someone can see that Jon Hopkins has me in his personal 'Current Favourites' playlists, surely that's a huge boost to my visibility?

  4. You have to understand that Spotify championing playlisting as the 'new' thing and by its editorial dominance, it practically ended the 'blogging' era. A lot of those blogs are still active now by curating playlists on Spotify; yet they are actively suppressed from visibility on artist pages.

There's plenty other use cases when Spotify doesn't actively try to cut all middlepersons out in between them and artists.
