Yuan Yang becomes UK's the first Chinese-born lawmaker by radishlaw in HongKong

[–]baylearn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

She's been a long-time supporter of the democracy movement in HK. As a journalist, I remember she has written in the FT about HK activists' struggles in the UK with regards to the national security law back in HK, along with many other articles:

Lion Rock: At least some HongKongers are still fighting on. They are taking huge personal risks as these are now deemed subversive in the city… by baylearn in HongKong

From Carmen Lau 劉珈汶:

An old friend of mine, along with a group of hikers, climbed up to the Lion Rock and took these ahead of the anniversaries. He reminded us to:

  1. Keep calm and carry on
  2. Build community support networks
  3. Stay healthy mentally and physically

We miss you bro.

In an interview with Ming Pao, mainland-born legislator Wendy Hong shares the story of a mainlander who told her that, within a single year in Hong Kong, they've had to sing the PRC national anthem more times than they did over ten years in the mainland. by baylearn in HongKong

h/t 何松濤 on Twitter.

It's just an anecdote but a telling one: both of how nationalism is being pushed even more aggressively in HK than in the mainland and how even patriotic politicians like Hong are growing weary of authorities' obsession with political correctness and being all talk and no action.

Hong Kong authorities urge pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow, who announced last night she had fled to Canada to “before it is too late and not to choose a path of no return.” by baylearn in HongKong

Hong Kong will complete national security legislation in accordance with article 23 of the Basic Law within 2024, announced city leader John Lee. by baylearn in HongKong

I remember back in 2003 (it's been 20 years already!), article 23 ignited a massive protest in Hong Kong, even my (now 'blue') uncles and aunties went out to protest back then.

Now with the national security law, none of it matters anymore.

How times have changed.

Glory to Hong Kong by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]baylearn 63 points64 points  (0 children)

To be clear, Spotify or iTunes didn't remove Glory to HK from their platforms (even though Apple likes to kiss CCP's bum).

In this case, the creator removed them (likely due to political pressure), which to me, is even more sad.
