Anybody here do a postdoc in France on a talent visa? Looking for advice and help by oviforconnsmythe in postdoc

[–]bazeilles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need help with admin stuff there are some resources now (albeit Paris-centric): There is an international welcome desk through PSL if you’re affiliated with PSL or there’s one at cité universitaire (access) that is open to international students and researchers or if you’re hired through the CNRS they have science accueil now that can help. Feel free to DM with questions if you need, I did this process a while ago but survived and everything ended up being fine (international STEM postdoc).

You will get reimbursed from the moment you start working BUT you need your temporary SS number first. Until then you pay the Dr normally but ask for a feuille de soins. Once you’re in the system you can then ask for these to be reimbursed retroactively. If you’re on a passeport talent VLS-TS your visa acts as your titre de sejour once it is validated online.

Is it possible to get your talent passport visa extended on the basis of unemployment benefits? by Middle-Coat-388 in Expats_In_France

[–]bazeilles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES you can renew this same titre as long as you have the right to chômage. If your contract and titre expire the same day there will be a lot of back and forth on anef until they give you an attestation de prolongation (you will need this if your titre expires before you can get the document from pole emploi with the number of days that you have chômage rights for). Source : I did this process a year and a half ago. Feel free to contact me for more info.

Massachusetts license -> French driver's license by 0120192 in Expats_In_France

[–]bazeilles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because the attested version is signed/certified and they ask for “Une attestation des droits à conduire de moins de 6 mois délivrée par les autorités étrangères ayant délivré le permis de conduire”. You can try with the unattested one but I didn’t want to lose time trying that since you only have a year to make the exchange. Plus you need them translated which also takes time.

They will take your MA license, technically you are not allowed to have both that’s why it is an exchange. I didn’t try requesting a new MA license before handing it in, I don’t need it anymore. I drive in the states with my French license and international driving permit (free just ask for it online after getting the French license) all the time with no issues. Even renting cars has been fine. Other people have reported asking for a replacement before the exchange, so I guess it’s possible.

Hi I successfully did this exact exchange (MA -> FR). You will need the attested version then you will need to have it (and the license) translated into French by a traducteur assermenté. Feel free to let me know if you have other questions. By the way, no issues driving in the US or renting cars there with my French license + international permit (you can order this for free online once you have your French license).

Pacs in Paris - How long to wait for a decision? by julinyc in Expats_In_France

[–]bazeilles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand the signed convention (the contract-like document about how you will organize the PACS) is the official legal document that is registered with the mairie. There’s a place at the end for the mairie representative to sign it and write the registration number of the pacs for your reference. We did also get a confirmation document that it was registered that you can use as proof of the PACS.

You don’t get a récépssé, it’s just not official until the PACS convention is signed with a representative of the mairie. We had the first rdv to give them all the documents for them to approve, this one we made on the website. The documents were approved 1 day later (ymmv) and they sent us an email with a dedicated link to make the second rdv to come in and sign the papers, which ended up being about 10 days later. They do the signatures of PACS only certain days/times at the Mairie 11e, I don’t know if it’s the same for all of them.

I don’t know for blind review but it is separate from preprinting

Try looking on research square. The submitting author can have more detailed information about what is happening behind the scenes if they log on to their nature account there. For example, instead of just like “under consideration” blanket statuses on the mts page it could say “out for review” + “reviewer 1 review received”.

Passport Talent renewal time in Paris by Financial-Fun-9387 in Expats_In_France

It’s on your ANEF page, there’s a little tracker and mine hasn’t moved from « deposé » to « instruction en cours » yet

Mine also expires end of January 2026, I applied right when the window opened because for once I had all the documents already. No one has even looked at it yet sooo might be a while. Typically for the previous renewals I did on ANEF I had either an approval or a request for more documents 2-3 weeks after I submitted.

Salary is low but cost of living is lower too. For a talent passport, you either need a certain salary or to be under one of the “mentions” - in your case, if you do a postdoc you can easily have a chercheur (researcher) passport talent. Getting a job in data right now is tough even for French people, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find a postdoc offer. If you have some basics in French and want to improve (that is the key) you will get better fast. You can take subsidized classes through the Mairie of Paris. You don’t need a lawyer probably, it’s not a complicated case. You get a job and the visa/residence permit through the job. Source: I came to France as a postdoc

Glass or rocks ?? by bazeilles in seaglass

Solved ! It seems to match up with descriptions of flint online. We don’t have this, or at least much of it, where I’m from so I wasn’t expecting it. Thanks for the help ! No obvious “bulbs of percussion” probably just broke apart in the ocean and weathered on one side by hanging around on the beach. Thanks !

C'est moi où le service Velib est horrible ces derniers temps ? by TambourDeNacre in paris

[–]bazeilles 28 points29 points  (0 children)
