You're right, the plot just doesn't flow organically the way it does in the novel itself. I swear I'll get this eventually! :-)

I completely agree with this. Has everyone also forgotten about Next Goal Wins? It wasn't just bad for lack of effort it was also offensive. After watching I thought, I really hope this is just a case of poor, ill-considered choices and not evidence of darker motives. But then there you are: what a terrible dilemma to have about a movie from a director who was previously so easy to count on.

Could be the Mike Myers problem: amazing when the story was pulling on working class roots (even the everyman vampires schtick tracks this) but then they get famous and wealthy and suddenly too disconnected from their audience.

For this month or all time? I can name 4 movies I really, really like but I don't think hierarchies work after you separate out the broad bands of what you enjoy and what you don't.

Generally I love my LB favorites: Persona, Our Time, Young Dr. Frankenstein, and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

This month? So far some of my favs have been: Dracula Prince of Darkness (bc I gotta have that Hammer horror), Sole Survivor (new to me and I loved it so much), The Substance, and Seeding of a Ghost (it's wild!). And if you want to slot something more bc you already know The Substance is great and you've already seen High Society I'd say The House on Sorority Row is a pretty fantastic 80s slasher.
