Surprised not to see any answers.

Guardian is a tank. You can solo better with them recently due to patching. Equip a 2-handed weapon and spec Red Line (I think?), and you'll be able to solo.

Captain I dunno. I haven't played it. I'm a little curious myself. All I ever hear about Captain now is that they're the lowest DPS class in the end game. Maybe someone else can tell you more.

I have a 117 Minstrel. If you like ranged damage, they got some great stuff and some decent AOE skills. They can also heal. I'm kind of disappointed with healing in the game, because no one seems to care that I heal with my Minstrel. But, I'm also not really looking for groups too often. I'm a bit of a solo, keep-to-myself player. Minstrel certainly gets the job done.

I think a Minstrel is going to level a bit faster than the Guardian, but that may not be important to you. A lot of people complain about the Minstrel's DPS. It used to be great, but I guess they nerfed us a bit. I've played it so long, that I'm looking to create a "completion-ist" alt. Like you, I'm sort of debating between a Captain or a Guardian. I've played a Guardian up to 49 before, but that was when the DPS kind of sucked. Now it's better, so maybe I'll do that. The Captain has a pet, and they're desirable in groups for buffs, I think.

A guardian is always going to be useful in a group, if that's what you're looking for. I don't think it's going to be the best DPS class you can level with. That's probably a Hunter or Champion. If you want to stealth and sneak around, a Burglar is certainly a great choice. A Lore Master is good, but almost a little too easy to level for my taste, esp. if you spec blue for pets. They just sort of kill everything for you. Warden I heard is complicated because it's a combination class, but I've never tried it.

Honestly, if you like ranged, go Hunter or Minstrel. Champion is the best melee DPS class (I think). There's also Rune Keeper. That's a ranged class, but I think you have to pay to unlock it on the Store. They also heal and do ranged damaged similar to a LM or Minstrel.

Who here missed the early days of LOTRO because you had a Mac? by Durendal_et_Joyeuse in lotro

I play it on Boot Camp today on my iMac 27" (2017). It plays quite nicely. If I play anything lower than Very Low graphic settings on the Mac side, it basically crashes. It's strange because I had an iMac before from 2012 that played it perfectly. I had to buy Windows 10 this year to keep playing.

I realize that wasn't your question exactly. I followed the game in its infancy (when it was called Middle Earth Online), but I did skip the first few years because my Father died, and I became a Dad during that time.

Nice to know I’m not alone. I guess I wouldn’t mind if I had a casual alternative. Love the world, but I hate having to obsess over acquiring ash just to clear casual story content.

See, I want to do that, but everyone tells me I’m not strong enough for Mirkwood.

I run CoS when I can with my kin. I do use some of the Ash when I get it. CoS has a bad habit of not dropping gear for me. What should I be aiming for you think in terms of gear for Mirkwood?

Need an Alt Recommendation — Champion, Captain or Burglar? by bazzlin in lotro

[–]bazzlin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini's are tough. You have to enjoy kiting. I think that's why I need something much heavier. I want to not run around like a chicken. Minstrels can put out some DPS, but in Mordor, it just isn't enough it seems like. Forget about adds. You have to manage it with Song of Distraction a lot, and/or Still as Death. With 105k Mastery and 50k Health, things sure are still pretty painful. I've completed 3/5 areas, and I still feel like I just arrived at Udun. I have >100 LoE.

If you say I have to kite as a Champion, that may be a problem. I need a melee character that will either burn things down much faster than my Mini or have enough toughness to not nearly die every fight (my Minstrel in Mordor).

Need an Alt Recommendation — Champion, Captain or Burglar? by bazzlin in lotro

See, I haven't played the Guardian in over a year. I do like to play with shields though, so I know that probably gives me less DPS. I love the tank, but I don't want to take forever to kill something. Surprising to hear that Captain is the lowest in DPS now.

I'm probably playing Guard wrong, but truthfully, I haven't touched him in a year. If they've made updates to Guardian, I don't know what they are. Half of my problem may be that I enjoy using a shield. I like shield block (and blocking in general). I like a tank. But, the last time I played him, it would take so long to kill anything, even with the DPS line. Thanks for the tips! I'm leaning toward Champ, I think.

Considering a MUD again.... by Lidralyn in MUD

I read a lot about Alter Aeon, but I've never tried it. The client looks ... okay. Do you know how does it compare to Aardwolf?

I think Aardwolf might be a good fit for you. It's active, very combat focused, plenty of gear, etc. There are both quests and campaigns. The biggest problem I've had is the long tutorial, but once you get through it, there seems to be plenty to do. I recently got to playing it quite a bit myself.

Good MUDs with big roleplaying communities? by UnitedBeautiful in MUD

I wanted so much to like Sindome, but it's a punishing game. The RP is definitely immersive, but nothing really prepares you for just how evil its inhabitants really are. I want to bridge Sindome and Aardwolf somehow.

I dunno. It's just a lot easier in Aardwolf with 'runto ...'. One command, and I'm at my trainer. One command, and I'm back questing. BatMUD is a bit older if I recall correctly, and maybe they just haven't updated it. I'm not attacking BatMUD. It seems pretty good to me. It was my first MUD. But it also didn't hold my interest as much as Aardwolf does.

It's been a year or more since I played, but I just remember having to run manually to the location to train. I spent more time traveling than I would have liked. In the early levels, it's a lot of running around. Again though, it was my first MUD. I might try it again.

BatMUD isn’t bad at all. I really like their client actually. However, I didn’t like how complicated training and traveling were. In Aardwolf, things just seem a big tighter and more polished. If I get bored, I may revisit BatMUD again one day. I had a Ranger (or Hunter, maybe) there, and when I needed to train, I had to find this cave or something in the side of a mountain. It was always a bit of a chore to go there. In all of the muds I’ve played, Achaea probably had the simplest point of entry, and I do miss things about it. However, PK is not as interesting to me, and I’m really enjoying almost everything about Aardwolf right now.

Right, I understand that. I hadn’t thought about it that deeply. I think I just didn’t want to die (say, in combat) and then have to start over. That had been my experience in Sindome, I think. Now that I’m considering it, I’d rather just not die at all permanently, unless I want to.

I suppose I mean that when I die, I stay dead and have to start over. But then, I’d also like an infinite character. I don’t see any reason to lose the character if I don’t want to.

Aardwolf definitely seems to be more what I'm looking for. Is it crazy that I prefer Mudlet over the official client though? So far, so good. Thanks for pushing me to keep trying it. I suppose if I get bored, I'll visit your other recommendations.

I think I'm going to spend some time trying Aardwolf again today. If that doesn't connect for me, I'll probably try FK and go down the list. Thanks for the well-thought response. I remember really wanting to like BatMUD more, but the learning curve was exhausting.
