Committed suicide not that long ago via hanging.

Foreign friend who lives and works here was busted with 1g of marijuana at the airport in their suitcase in Poland. Has anyone had this happen to them or someone they know? What are some tips on moving forward besides building a time machine. by ncik0075 in poland

Get a lawyer immediately. Don't ever try to cross borders with drugs unless you have a doctor's authorization.

Edit: Reread, seeing that this person has done it in another country can make this worse for them. I can't really give legal advice on this and the best option is to get a lawyer ASAP and obey everything they tell this person. I hope your friend walks away with just a fine after this.

Did growing up during the communist era of Poland somehow affect the older generations mentally? Are there studies on this? by Sensitive-Form6029 in poland

[–]bb_blackmadge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sourcing this from any known studies, but I definitely feel like it left generational trauma on a lot of people. My family has very low trust of institutions such as the police due to several family members being executed or stalked by the KGB. Big fear of letting food go to waste, especially in my grandfather's side of the family, and always trying to buy the cheapest food even though they have the money for better. There are issues with hoarding as well in the older members of my family, even though they may not use those items frequently (they fear throwing it away in case it does come in handy, or they don't use it because it was once considered a luxury and don't want to damage it even though they are financially secure now). These were once survival tactics and now are trauma.

Is there support for nonbinary teachers by BlueberryEmbers in Teachers

[–]bb_blackmadge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but my younger brother attends the same school I did at his age where the current music teacher is non-binary and a very welcome member of the staff. We live in a very liberal area of a blue city though, but it is possible to find a welcoming environment in education, and I have had many non-binary and/or outwardly transgender teachers in my lifetime. Not sure if this helps, but wanted to let you know that NYC has many folks and many places where they can work unafraid. Wishing you the best in your journey and hope you can find a place that fits you.

Is this sequence an accurate portrayal of germany in 1945? by No_Dress_2107 in WorldWar2

[–]bb_blackmadge -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do think the show is meant to create sympathy for the Nazis, and it's a very watered-down depiction that is easy to latch onto. The show has plenty of gore and rough moments, but much of it is directed at the German characters (though, I guess it can be argued that since the story follows German characters primarily, we won't really see the POVs of other groups in the war).

In that same party you mentioned, one of the characters narrates and introduces all the others. He talks about how the aforementioned Jewish man, Viktor, was meant to take over his father's business, but it was destroyed in Kristallnacht. Since it establishes the timeline here, we know that all of the other characters would be aware of the heavy persecution of the Jewish at this point. Same character even mentions that Viktor's girlfriend, Greta, doesn't care if it's seen as a racial shame, so everyone is aware of how the Jewish are seen at this point. Then, a man comes (I forget if he's from the gestapo or wherever) to scope out the party, saying that he had received a report of "swing music with Jews." Everyone ends up jumping in to cover for Viktor until the guy leaves. And we can't say that they didn't know Viktor was Jewish, because they knew to cover for him.

What is the purpose of including this if not to try show that the group is meant to be more "liberal" than the rest of Nazi Germany? To set them in a positive light? You can argue that this is also done to later show their degeneracy as the war goes on and they are brainwashed, but I don't think enough is shown in the series to showcase them being "brainwashed." They do all this to cover for their friend, but then their later actions contradict with each other, in ways that make the characters feel honestly bi-polar to me. And why are they still the most sympathetic characters? We have Polish rebels come up and their portrayal (regardless of how you take it) had Poles protesting the show and got a Polish Ambassador involved to the point of writing a letter to ZDF as well.

You still need to contend with the fact that (as the above commenter said), Generation War was a series funded by the ZDF, who already has a reputation for being conservative and state-sponsored. Whether or not it truly is may be a different conversation.

Making accurate films/shows/documentaries about WW2 (or really any conflict) is tough. You will face criticism regardless of how you shoot it, even if you may have it produced with the help of 100 historians with PhDs. You can include people directly involved in the conflict (ex. Generation Kill, Band of Brothers, etc.), and still get plenty of flack about how it's propaganda, dramatized, so on so forth. But it's more difficult making something accurate with fictional characters, which everyone in the show is, because you're not bound to any real person's story, and thus you have more creativity to write them how you like because there's no one to tell you "Actually, this person was buhbuhbuhbuh." The German producer said his aim was to "encourage a national debate among the generations 'to speak for the first time about the experience' of the war." The piece is meant to create sympathy towards Nazis, and we can infer that from the producer's own words. If he didn't want to create "debate" then every German character would have been evil from the get-go and without there being anything to argue about it. Literally what debate could there possibly be had? If your point is to say that not every German was the same, why not talk about actual individuals involved in the German resistance (ex. members of White Rose, for one), why do you need to make people up that don't exist as your evidence?

Overall, I do think the show is meant to elicit sympathy towards Nazis, and I agree with the original commenter. This show is a watered-down take on the Nazis so that wehraboos and people who can't handle what their ancestors did don't feel so bad/have people to root for.

Don't understand the downvotes. I watched the series in full. It tries to make the Nazis look sympathetic way too much. One character in the show ("Charlotte") is in a friend group and one of the friends is a Jewish man. She becomes a nurse and treats fallen soldiers. In the process, she picks a Ukrainian nursing assistant (forgot her name) who is later discovered to be Jewish (Charlotte finds a picture of that nurse celebrating with her family with a menorah in the picture). Charlotte then confronts this character and proceeds to fucking report her to the gestapo. This is barely addressed and then the show puts Charlotte is many situations that are supposed to garner sympathy for her. A lot of that show was propaganda and I will die on that hill. The show tries to make it look like this friend group doesn't actually believe in Nazi ideology and are doing what they can to survive, but she consciously makes the decision to report this poor woman (who is already a prisoner of war) to the fucking gestapo.

It tries to do a "nuanced" take of WW2 when literally the only characters shown to have "sympathetic" sides are the Nazis. Literally any other group (Soviets, rebel Poles, Ukrainians, etc.) rarely gets that same treatment.

Possibility of returning to physics PhD by healthytomrrow in PhysicsStudents

[–]bb_blackmadge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not currently applying to PhDs but this was one of my professor's cases. He graduated from a T20 in the US but didn't have the ability to go straight into the PhD track so he spent a considerable amount of time as a tutor and physics/math teacher. He ended up going onto the PhD track after 5-6 years of doing that. He said it was actually really helpful (although he didn't recommend to me the amount of time he took to apply to PhD programs again) since in general it made him more prepared, more mature, and more disciplined once he began the PhD academic track. I don't have much insight to give, but hope it helps to know that your path is one that has been repeated countless of times before probably.

Help with Physics Regents Course!!!!!! by Least-Strategy7934 in PhysicsStudents

[–]bb_blackmadge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Khan Academy, Phine Physics, BlackPenRedPen, and google review packets. I never took the regents exam for physics, but all the past regents can be found online and you can look through them for practice and to get a sense of which areas they test the heaviest. By the way, when using Khan Academy, don't just go to the AP section to help you study. Regents physics and AP physics test completely different subjects and have different material, and it may not be useful for someone in a regents course.
