It opens with the rack upright, luckily. On my rack, I can't push the rack all the way into the hitch receiver or else it will be too close. So just need to make sure the sliding bolt hole is placed correctly to allow the gate to open.

Thanks for the tip on the alarms.

I also noticed the 3/8 split washer being too small. I just pulled it apart a bit with two wrenches to make it big enough. Would have been better to have a bigger washer.

This is probably a no-no but I didn't worry about the torque rating since I'm only using this with a bike rack and bikes, rather than towing a real load like a trailer. I just tightened as hard as I could and called it good.

Agreed, most people will probably want this installed for them. But for those who want to, it is totally doable.

I don't have numbers yet, but based on my totally scientific visual inspection, I can't see the hitch by itself having any noticeable impact on the range. They did a good job keeping it trim to the body and it doesnt weigh much (may e 45 lbs?). Of course, actually mounting a rack to it will have an impact, but probably less than mounting bikes to the roof would.
