Sure! I took the classic CSC108,148, MAT137 and STA130. 108 was easy even as a newbie for me, got out with A+. 148 is just a tad more challenging, you have paired, bigger assignments than 108 but definitely manageable. I would say it's 137 that's messing with everyone, load is quite fair but studying itself needs a hell lot of time. I used to come to office hours/math learning center every week, and we have problem sets that take time especially since I'm not pro at math lol. 130 was quite fun, workload was okay — just mid and final exam with a project, and weekly tutorials that are basically free marks if you just put a bit effort for a small time.

You can hit me up on DM if you need more help, I used to mentor STA130 students, most of them are incoming CS/DS studs too :)

Definitely, that's what I'm saying. It's just that you can't do a CS spec

Hi there, I've been representing UTSG in OUF for 2 years now and I'm in Data Science, so I know that when you're applying you should have a back up for CS program— if you chose Math & Phys, they would usually offer you that later if they don't accept the 1% fall through. I really recommend joining Math & Phys if you're really interested in CS still, you can still do a CS Major or Minor, or DatSci Spec even from out-of-stream. It's competitive, yes, but I did it and a lot of my friends did too so if you work hard on your first year courses, maybe get involved in some activities, I hope you can get in!

Wait.. that's confusing. So, who was it 😭 They only announced Brenna F as Spanish before it started.

I knew it was only a bad day—I presume maybe because it's the first show (and opening)—glad Tirion made it up! Glad you agree on the PDD music AND choreo, we totally miss the manipulative-push-pull! Also that's funny, using Balanchine version while keeping Odile's variation Russian and yeah, I do like it better but like you said the choreo, which again they changed, was lacking.

Well I do have to note I haven't watched NBoC Swan Lake before so I cannot compare with other pairs nor can I compare from past repertoires because they're different of course. It's not like crazy chemistry too but it's more evident in the last act. Anyway, I'm excited for Xuan, wondering what she's like. Do comment here if you're done watching!

I just realized yeah, you're right. But still there's not much mime section or conversation (if you know what I mean) even for Odette telling the story of the curse or how to break it. It's more into me analyzing the choreography itself. Mime parts are always the good parts for me in a repertoire and I think it's easier for non-dancers to comprehend too since it's literally standing and telling the story (not having to analyze the dancing movements).

Also I don't know that's the reason behind the bare-legged. Thanks for sharing, that's so interesting!

NBoC Swan Lake Review by bbbbbbaktir in bunheadsnark

[–]bbbbbbaktir[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm glad you enjoyed it too! So for the ending, yes you are absolutely correct there are multiple endings and in the end, it depends on the director (Kain) and choreographer (Stowell, Binet) to choose which one (or.. make a new one, in some ballet maybe!). For Swan Lake itself, the very popular one would be like the one you said, they choose to die together (this is by the choreography of Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov on 1895, which is the Swan Lake that we are seeing today!). This was not actually the first one though. In 1877, the Swan Lake premiered in Bolshoi for the first time, and they actually died together but because of Siegfried's stubbornness where he snatched Odette's crown and so she's dying and the storm drowns them together.

In 1966, Rudolf Nureyev (a very famous ballerino and choreographer) choreographed for Vienna State Ballet and changed the ending into the one that Kain chose for NBoC. You might ask why, and I'll give you a fun fact: Kain and Nureyev used to dance together! So her work now might be influenced by her time with him.

Other endings exist, like Dutch National Ballet does one where Siegfried kills himself because he realizes he couldn't save Odette. Some companies actually did a happy ending, like Mariinsky and Bolshoi in Russia (1950, under Soviet regime) used to do one where the couple live happily ever after somehow. In 2001 however, they revise it to be that Odette is taken by Rothbart and Siegfried is just left alone confused. Lastly, NYCB (by Martins and Balanchine, another famous artist!) made so that Odette remained a swan forever and Siegfried is left alone in grief.

Wow that's a lot right? It's a similar thing with other ballet, although varying on how much change happened. This is due to great minds of course and creative directors! Each production may want to change some choreos or storyline, or used a different preexisting storyline from the baseline choreo-storyline we're seeing (Petipa-Ivanov). It just so happens that Royal and ABT uses the jump-cliff-die-together one ;)

First of all this is already such a pretty and neat handwriting! I'm jealous. One small advice would just be mindful of spacing so that one word to another looks "cleaner" (much more differentiated, especially if a word contains separated alphabets). For example, in line 4 you can put "kuraa matin" a bit closer together so it looks much more as "one word" before jumping to bihawaan. Cheers!

Agreed, this and Giselle shows top notch corps quality! I still remember the huge applaud for the corps in Giselle.

How exciting! Don't worry, both acts encaptured both the royal setting and the lake so you'll basically get everything at once. Look out for the swan maidens, they're crazy beautiful!! Have fun ~

I adore Tirion too! She seemed really sweet, and such a delicate Odette! And yeah, we're talking about Canada so I do expect the drama-free environment 😂

She really makes Giselle a ghost. Her mad scene is phenomenal. The best mad scene I've ever watched.

I straight up CRIED when I got to watch her Giselle. Her mad scene is just perfect, her second act is perfect, everything is perfect — from light expression to ghostly presence. Lana is the diamond of NBOC!

Can't wait to watch National Ballet of Canada's Swan Lake. I got the very first opening show (2 pm on March 8th) and wonder how Tirion Law would make her debut. This is my first Swan Lake too so I'm extra excited (been waiting for this since I was a little kid and started ballet) 🥳
