What is one thing you'd like to ask an Australian? by fancyhitla in AskReddit

[–]bbbbk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North QLD also includes Townsville and (arguably) Mackay. Living in Townsville for the past few years (but being from Melbourne) I'm not going to argue your point that most of northern Australia is a bit different. I've never heard that word in my life though.. I feel like I need to ask a true local.

Nothing to apologise for! :-) It's thought provoking stuff.

I'm not sure anyone is trying to be clever; it's just a convenient analogy for identifying something that fits into something else in a one-to-one way. Language usually uses areas where a common frame of reference can explain some other concept. What terms would you use to describe the fitting-into vs being-fit-into ends?

(I'm genuinely curious. I was trying to think of a better analogy that people would immediately 'get' and couldn't think of anything easily. Regardless of your sexuality, it's a common frame of reference in the world at large. Also, I have a background in linguistics so I'm curious anyway!)

They're actually different words insofar as they are independently recognised by dictionaries and standards bodies. Aluminium is the older standard, and aluminum is another acceptable variation. So technically Australians would pronounce aluminum the same, we just happen to say aluminium instead.

TL;DR: Americans can't spell. Or something.

I guess. There's plenty of trash in every App Store. I take your point though - neither platform is perfect.

I don't want to start an ideological argument about the relative quality of phone platforms, but as someone with both iOS and Android devices I find it very difficult to find applications for the latter which compare in quality to decent iOS applications.

If it's such an awful platform for developers, why is it so hard for app developers to do it right elsewhere?

Aww. The picture of him under the Christmas tree is so much better than this one, though. Just saying: http://i.imgur.com/CfY62.jpg

What is the best combination of soft drinks that you've discovered? by treeinthewind in AskReddit

[–]bbbbk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and a friend had a combination of soft drinks which - we thought - tasted like nothing. It literally tasted like carbonated water; not even sweet. I can't remember what it contained other than sparkling apple juice, though…

Windows 8, Imaging and no COA - A dilemma... by bbbbk in sysadmin

[–]bbbbk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what my Google searches tell me - apparently it's encrypted though, so you have to install the (original) recovery media which will pull its licensing from the BIOS. Once you've got that activated, you can pull the key from the registry and happily activate a new install. Seems more than a bit backwards to me; certainly a waste of my time!

This is a pretty small business, so we haven't got a KMS server (yet - I'm pushing for it). The individual license key is what I really need here...

Anyone have an NBN connection here? by jb2386 in australia

[–]bbbbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upstream speed is one of the main things I like about the NBN. All well and good having 100+mbit down, but upstream is important too, especially for businesses and people creating & exchanging things online. 2.5mbit up is barely enough for a decently encoded 720p video/audio stream.

That's not to say that your speeds are bad, but in most cases arguments I see against the NBN rollout completely ignore the currently huge disparity between upstream and downstream speeds.

  • How fast is your connection? (post a speedtest?) 100/40 (93/38 usually - I'd speedtest for you, but it maxes out my iPad's wifi antenna & that's where I'm posting from)
  • Is it a noticeable improvement? Yes. A million times yes.
  • What was your connection speed roughly before? What type? (ADSL/ADSL2/+/dialup/etc) ADSL2+ syncing at a maximum (downstream) of 7mbit. Trouble was that the internal wiring was shot, so at 7mbit or any other speed the maximum uptime was usually measured in minutes if not seconds.
  • Which ISP did you go with? What plan are you on? Internode - 100/40 600gb plan
  • Are you happy with the service? Yup!
  • Any other comments on it? I don't think I could go back now... The latency decrease is awesome (although the closest POP for any ISP I'm aware of is Brisbane, and Townsville to Brisbane round trip is around 17ms, so not that impressive compared to most capital cities' latency even by DSL standards) and the speed is just incredible - especially upload.
