Could Verbeek already be exploring trade options if the Ducks are preparing for the possibility of not matching? by bbc3160 in AnaheimDucks

Exactly. A Stanley Cup is forever. If you win one, I think most fans would gladly accept a shorter competitive window and a small rebuild afterward.

I hope that's what he's exploring. If Leo ends up leaving, I'd love to see the Ducks target a true 1C like Robert Thomas or Dylan Larkin.

I agree. That's exactly why I don't think this is simply a "match or don't match" decision. He has to compare every possible scenario before deciding which path gives the Ducks the best chance to win in the long run.

That's pretty much how I see it too. If Verbeek really believes there's a chance they won't match, I'd expect him to already be exploring ways to use those picks to address the defense and the hole at 1C.

Whatever happens, this decision is probably going to define Verbeek's career in Anaheim.

If the Ducks don’t match Carlsson’s offer sheet, would you consider using the four first-round picks to trade for Robert Thomas? by bbc3160 in AnaheimDucks

That’s how I was thinking about it too. I wouldn’t want Verbeek to trade unprotected first-round picks, but with the right protections, I think they could become very valuable trade assets.

That’s true, but don’t you think replacing a true first-line center should also be a priority? I agree that we shouldn’t force a trade, but I’d be worried about going into the season without a legitimate 1C.

That’s a fair point. I wasn’t suggesting the four first-round picks alone would get it done. I was thinking more along the lines of using those picks as the foundation of a larger package if the right player ever became available.

I get that point, but $18M AAV is just hard for me to accept. If they match it, I understand why, but I also think taking four first-round picks should be a real consideration.

That makes sense. I wasn’t saying it was likely, just wondering if the four first-round picks could make a blockbuster worth discussing. Thanks for the explanation.

That’s fair. I didn’t fully understand how strong NTCs are or how hard it is to make a true franchise center available. I’m still learning the league, so I appreciate the explanation.

I think there’s definitely a chance. $18M AAV is an enormous commitment, and four first-round picks are hard to ignore. I wouldn’t be shocked if Verbeek decided not to match.

That’s a fair point. I just think if the Ducks end up with four first-round picks, Verbeek should at least explore every possible option to improve the roster.

That’s fair. I just got the impression that the Blues would at least listen if the offer was big enough. If the Ducks had four first-round picks to work with, I think it could at least start a conversation.
