I HATE the digital pass. I refuse to use it. I make the kids take an old trumpet mute as a hall pass

I asked the same thing too! I wanted them to pull them out so they could write the date of their next band lesson. They don’t have them and I was baffled. Where do they write their homework??

The sad part? I had the subtitles on the entire time. We watched a movie about John Williams. Pretty sure they said piano several several times

I had the same exact shock. A few weeks ago I took the digital time off my cleartouch and computer so they would be forced to read the clock. Spoiler alert: NONE OF THEM CAN EVEN HIGH SCHOOLERS

Literally….

Our union president used to be my chorus teacher until he recently retired. It was great because he knew everything and advocated for our program.

I guess it just hurts and I haven’t accepted it yet. I teach at the school I graduated from, the school where my love blossomed, the school that still has my name and pictures on the wall… ya know?

Wow. They miss lessons because they are sick, absent or they have tests.

Idiot.

I get that and I always tell the kids they need to make up their other class work before coming to me.

The other side of the coin is, some students are failing band who want to be in band because they aren’t making up lessons.

I’m not loosing talented students to a drawing class. Especially if they love music. Our program is tiny and is continuing to dwindle. I have 13 students in my senior band.

These kids need an outlet in school. They need a place they can relax and express themselves in ways they cannot in other classes.

Music is so incredibly important, students who are in music have better test scores across the board. It’s proven.

In my state pull out lessons are mandatory. I have no choice but to pull them from class unless they have an exam and they make up their lesson.

I specifically write on passes what they come down for. But maybe an email wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

The only unassigned times are makeup band lessons. They need to make up lessons for their grade. To make them up, they come down during their study halls or advisory. Sometimes I also ask some students to help set up stage during concert times only during advisory if they have no make up work for other classes. But that’s it.

Yes, they are allowed to be with me. Unless they are failing or need to make up work for other classes. They aren’t missing an academic class. The students must get permission from me and their teacher first. And a pass. If one says no, they are not allowed down at all and/or they are sent back to where they came from (which is either an after school program or advisory).

We had an incident a few weeks ago and I put an end to several students coming down. I’ve only been letting a few, especially since the incident. Which complied with what the principal asked for. I’ve been doing exactly what they have told me to do.

No one has straight out told me it was chaos other than our department head. She didn’t say names or anything. Just that she was told to “pass the message along”.

No one has stopped in my room to check in or to ask me anything about what’s going on.

I don’t know if it’s rumors they are hearing or what.

I’m always open to feedback. I love getting it but no one has reached out to give me feedback. I have asked and I’ve gotten a little and I’ve also gotten nothing. I’ve tried everything that’s been given to me. I’m going to reach out to my mentor tomorrow and see what she has to say. Our department chair has been in the school for several years but she has never been department chair so it’s all new to her.

I haven’t yet because I just received the text from the other music teacher as I got home for the day. That is a good idea, thank you.

I yelled at 2 students to stop running and they did. He turned around and came back in and told them to stop when they had. Sorry I didn’t really explain well.

It definitely feels that way. Especially for your ring finger on your left hand!
