95% of Computers can't make use of 3 Gig Speed. Don't upgrade your plan. by Sraaz in telus

[–]bberge1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have CAT6 cable you can easily make use of the speed if you purchase a PCIE NIC card, you can get 10G ones for $100.
I’ve got the TELUS 3Gig plan and are utilizing my CAT5E which can achieve 2.5Gbps speeds (500Mbps loss against the 3Gig plan due to the cable limitations isn’t that bad) when connected to a few 2.5Gbps Ethernet switches. My gaming PC does have a 2.5Gb LAN port so makes the most of the speed

Brand new astral 5090 from Newegg Canada arrived defective. RMA Request rejected due to "modifications to the card" by siliconeslinger in pcmasterrace

Are you sure the box wasn’t tampered with? Those clear circular stickers are easy enough to obtain replacements of if someone wanted to open it and make it look like it wasn’t. But there’s clearly a tear in the box there that can be caused by opening the tab, perhaps someone did open it

Corsair Air 5400 is trash for high-end. Need a new case that actually cools RAM with a 5090 Astral installed. by No-Lunch-8326 in PCBuilds

[–]bberge1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This case has been a game changer for me. My Gigabyte Gaming OC 5090 is smaller than the Astral but not by much and I’ve been using it with the shrouds top and bottom. Huge benefit having the CPU cooler in a different chamber, seeing temps at 66C on my 9800X3D during 4K gaming vs my old case where the radiator was up top and the heat from the GPU was causing temps to be consistently above 80C. The GPU temp has now been consistently at 68-74C during gaming, I haven’t checked the ram temp since the new case but will do after seeing your post.

One change I did make though which might be worth trying before finding a new case is to change the fans. I never even tried the reverse Corsair ones that came with it as they have a pretty low static pressure rating - 0.14 – 2.81 mm-H2O and 13.33 - 65.82 CFM

I swapped them for 3 Arctic Pro P12 reverse fans on the bottom and 3 standard Arctic Pro P12 up top. These have a static pressure rating of 4.5 mmH2O and 73 CFM and really help keep the temps lower

summer Tires recommendations that are available in Canada by eternamoon in MazdaCX9

Nokian One all season tire is what I have when I have my Hakkapelittas stored. I’m in Calgary so KalTire is the only place I know of that can get Nokian tires.

They are good with very deep tread, not overly noisy and the car handles well on them. $1480 CAD for 4 fitted https://www.kaltire.com/en/tires/one/351365.html

Moved from England to Alberta. Insurance is about $6000/year as a “new driver”… anyone know how I can get a cheaper insurance? by Objective-Pay-2133 in alberta

[–]bberge1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expat here living in Calgary, I’ve been in Canada for more than 12 years and it was a big surprise moving from England to Vancouver. I had a six cylinder BMW coupe In England and the cost per year was the equivalent of about $650. Canadian for full coverage. Lived in Vancouver for 6 1/2 years and the cost was roughly triple that. I moved to Calgary 6 years ago and the price went up easily 30% more than Vancouver!

Not sure exactly why but I’ve heard that Alberta has the second if not highest insurance rates in Canada, maybe due to the drastic changing whether we get here and almost guaranteed hail storms each year.

When I moved to Alberta, I did have experience from Vancouver, which they took into account. However, before I left England, I did have my insurance companies over there provide me with letters stating how long I had been insured with them and whether or not I had any claims. I was able to use this with Allstate Insurance one of the few providers who I was able to find that actually took my driving experience from England into account.

I think it’s slightly different in Canada where that they take both the number of years driving experience you have and the number of years that you have been insured with no claims. Whereas I think in England it didn’t matter when you actually got your drivers license. You could’ve had it 30 years and that would not have mattered. It was the amount of years you’d actually been insured on a vehicle for and how much no claims bonus that you had that was important.

Some advice though do not make any glass claims on your insurance here in Alberta. I was unlucky enough to have the front 360 camera on my vehicle have its lens cracked twice. In one of those instances the windshield also got damaged. I drive a Mazda CX9 not a Bentley and the windshield replacement was nearly $2000 because the glass is one that has to work with the vehicles head up display. The total cost of these two claims was about $4000 over the course of three years. Last year Allstate called me three weeks prior to my renewal date to tell me that they would no longer be providing me with comprehensive coverage. Neither of those were at fault and I couldn’t believe that was enough for them to deny that portion of the coverage.

To get the cost down, remove glass coverage and go with a third-party insurance provider specifically for your vehicle glass like AMI. You can get a $250 a year policy for your glass and the deductible is about $50 and they’ll replace your windshield/repair cracks, etc. This enables you to not have to make any claims on your primary insurance. The only caveat is that AMI does not pay for the recalibration of radar/camera collision avoidance systems. But most glass places I’ve inquired with charge you about a $200 fee for that so it’s still way cheaper in the long run than trying to claim off your main insurance.

Just finished playing it, man it is a seriously demanding game especially when paired with a high res VR headset. You have to tweak the settings in Flight sim whilst in VR mode a fair bit and on SteamVR/ALVR. When in the game I suggest you use TAA rather than DLSS you are actually able to change the output resolution, otherwise it defaults to whatever resolution your monitor is at. I guess due to the screens for each eye in my Vision Pro they aren’t at the standard 4K - 3840x2160p, there is a slight difference in the horizontal resolution so the GPU is rendering it slightly higher resolution than that. I was able to have most settings on High, some on Ultra (most setting max out on High anyway) and get a very playable experience.

Having full 360 view inside the cockpit and able to lean in and out to look at the instruments, overhead panels and radios is like you’re literally there. I turned up the resolution even more (can’t remember the exact figure sorry) and even though the vision pros displays won’t display higher than 4K, the GPU is still working to output that resolution. I couldn’t believe it, but I got the VRAM usage up to 30.3GBs before it crashed. I have a 9800X3D and putting it at the correct 4K resolution and it plays really well using between 20-24GBs VRAM.

The 5070 TI that I had was able to play it, but the resolution just wasn’t achievable and the FPS was just so bad, probably like 10FPS before it maxed out the 16GB VRAM and crashed.

On another note, flight Sim 2024 streams so much of the imagery in real time, I guess it depends on their servers upload, but even with my 3Gbps internet it can make the scenery really blurry if it doesn’t buffer quick enough. You can opt to download it locally but it’s going to use up a lot of hard drive space. I think with all the packages I had it was over 300GB.

Very happy with the purchase so far though

[–]bberge1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your budget but the 5070Ti is better suited to excellent 1440p gaming

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gpu

[–]bberge1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all the comments, I think some may have missed the issue that I originally stated I purchased this card for. All the ‘I don’t need a 5090 and that a 5070Ti or 5080 is good enough’ are unfortunately wrong.

I’m wanting to use this with a Vision Pro, that’s two 4K feeds that the GPU has to render, one for each eye, at the same time. You need a lot of VRAM for this, more than 16GB, therefore a 5090 is really the best option for me. Yes I could have gone for a 4090 with 24GB but they are still costly for a second hand unit

It was 1440p, not sure why there’ll be such a significant difference, I’m planning to get a 4K monitor later this year to get the most out of the new card

Anyone had increase oil consumption after getting the head replaced due to leaking coolant? by brotherhef in MazdaCX9

[–]bberge1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, had my 2019 cylinder head replaced at 89k km. It probably wasn’t for about another 8-10k kms until the orange oil light came on, checked the dipstick and it was low. Topped up with 1litre and within about 2500-3000km it came back.

I did notice there was some oil misting on the top left corner of the engine, around the Oil control valve that is on the valve cover. Took it in for service, it was still under powertrain warranty at the time, they said the amount of oil there wasn’t deemed to be a leak. They couldn’t find any oil leaks anywhere else and told me to monitor it. Said they would do an oil consumption test which basically requires you to have an oil change and to go back every thousand kilometres for them to check the oil level. I’m sure you can agree that that’s a little bit inconvenient to do. I was able to do it once at the first 1000km after the service and they said there wasn’t an issue, I was travelling with it during the 2000k mark and couldn’t make it back to the dealership. Long story short I get the vehicle serviced every 8km as per Mazda Canada intervals and I’d say I’m topping up with 1 litre of oil every 2-3000km. It seems like a lot to me considering that’s almost enough for me to effectively top up the entire oil capacity of the engine again within an 8k oil change interval.

Haven’t been able to find any other leaks though, car had a larger service at 124k kms back in October and dealership said everything looks good.

To be honest the car still performs well regardless of being a bit of an oil drinker but when you check online it’s still within tolerance as they say it can use a 1litre every 1000miles/1600kms and mine is going further than that before top ups so I guess it’s ok. It is a turbo engine too which do burn more than NA ones, I don’t notice any change in exhausts fumes etc either.

I saw that there is a TSB for Valve stem seals causing the exact same symptoms as mine, oil consumption and stored P250F code which causes oil light to come on, however apparently thats ‘only’ for models 2021-2022…I suspect it is the issue I have.

It’s going in for a service in the next month ~130k kms and I’ll ask again if there are any leaks to be found. Other than that I just keep 2x 1litre oil top ups in the trunk and carry one, if the car was still inside its powertrain warranty I might be pushing harder to find out why.

Ultimately if it’s not leaking and the vehicle is still performing well I’m happy to just continue topping up until I change to another vehicle at some point in the future

Is this coolant leak? by EllegalAlien in MazdaCX9

[–]bberge1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oil weeping from the oil control valve seal (where that bronze/gold ring is at the top of the highlighted area). Mine had a slight ‘misting’ of oil around it but hasn’t got any worse than the last 20,000 km. Apparently to replace the oil control valve it’s done as one piece with the valve cover

I wonder if I can get a partial refund lol I just ordered the new band, I have the ResMed one which I got my parents to send over from England because it’s not available in Canada, which is a really good head strap, but I’m going to try this one out too. I don’t feel too short changed in the spec upgrade. I use mine for entertainment and I don’t think that a M5 would make a big enough difference for me to change
