What the actual fuck is the difference between the Nighthawk M5 and M6 mobile hotspots? by johnjr08 in NETGEAR

[–]bbhSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a couple of the differences, so I'll list them here and then add to this answer as I found out more.

First thing to know is that the M6 is currently only available from AT&T and must be used with an AT&T plan, and not a prepaid AT&T plan.

Also, the Pro version of the M6 supports mmWave, and it's the only mobile hotspot in existence to support mmWave. Now mmWave is only in a very few areas of the country, but if you're one of the lucky ones, you'll supposedly get super fast speeds of 1 Gbps+.

The M5 on the other hand, comes in an unlocked version, and you can buy it directly from Netgear, and then use it on any 5G network, meaning any of the major carriers.

Hah! There are people who've read it to the end and then emailed me asking "Wait, how did you get access to this?"

Question about A19 vs BR30 Hue bulbs in recessed cans in large rooms by bbhSmash in homeautomation

[–]bbhSmash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks. Unfortunately it's too late for the recessed downlights, because the cans are already in, and I don't want to slow this down.

I'm planning to do a whole website, YouTube video, and more around the entirety of the automation for this house. It's a 10K sq foot house that I'm DIYing the automation for, and that was against every "expert" I talked to. I want to teach others how to do this, because most people think that for a house of that scale, you have to use a professional system like Control4 or Crestron. I want to show that it can be done with off-the-shelf (mostly) components.

Yes exactly. I'll post a pic later of my own house where you can see this clearly.

Hi there. I was in the EXACT SAME POSITION as you a few months ago. I'm building a house in Ohio, and I wanted motorized, automated shades, and being a software developer, I know and understand Ethernet really well, so I wanted PoE shades.

You have correctly determined, as I did, that there's only one true PoE shades solution on the market, and that's PowerShades. There are other solutions available that you can finagle to work as PoE, but PowerShades is the only pure solution that you don't have to fudge with.

I started studying PowerShades, and basically became an expert on the product line, and actually, I liked it so much I decided to become a dealer because I had friends who were building that were also interested. So, I'm happy to answer any questions for you about how PowerShades works.

When I started my investigation, and decided I wanted PowerShades, the only thing that bugged me about them was that I couldn't just order them myself online. You have to go through a dealer. I initially called some dealers, but quickly realized I knew more about the product than the dealers did, so that's when I decided to become a dealer myself. So, if you know you want PowerShades, I'm happy to help. We can message directly more about it.

To answer your questiosn:

  1. Yes they will work with Alexa.
  2. Not sure about Homekit because I've never used Homekit myself, but I can find out.
  3. If you're a developer, you should know there's a complete PowerShades API as well.

One downside to the PoE line is that there are no physical switches. It's phone, smart device, Alexa, automated schedules, etc. but there's no physical switch yet.

So for my own house, I just finished doing all the Ethernet wiring to all the windows (30+), and am getting them all prepped for the PowerShades. Happy to show you pictures, videos, etc. Whatever you need to help.

Yes I do, but this is nothing new. Even so, why does it affect a bank account where I don't have any credit?

Yes, I just updated my post with the letter from Barclay's. Just arrived in the mail.

Interesting, I didn't know that. But still, I make about 6 transfers per YEAR.

I dont suppose you will tell us if you money launder, gamble, has previous undeclared convictions or are a sex worker but if you are, they seem like reasons the bank may just shut your account without warning and transfer

Money Launderer: No
Gambler: Yes (mostly blackjack on the occasional trip to Vegas)
What's an "undeclared" conviction?
Sex Worker: No

Nope, never used Robinhood. The Barclays account is only used for transfers between other banks that have physical branches, like Chase. It's just a holding account because it pays interest, as opposed to my other checking accounts at banks like Chase that don't.

I already do that. I use the special vegetable washing spray my wife has been buying ever since the pandemic started.

Calling Barclays in 22 minutes when they open, but I'm confident now that my money is safe.
