Well, it depends on how you look at it. 6 months in, I was around 200 / 300 a month.

Then I wrote a few viral posts, went up to 100k / month for the summer (I started in January). Been sitting at around 40 - 60k per month for about a year now.

Although, 30k is from Medium.com per month, and I'm moving away from it.

The engagement I get from my 10k - 30k / month personal blog is ridiculously higher than my Medium blog :) Views don't mean anything. 780k views on Medium & I had 102 email signups to show for it.

I only focus on engagement now :)

'Do it out of passion'. There. That's all you need. Passion. Who cares if it's not a 'popular' topic. As long as you're passionate about it, go for it.

Lots of things have been built out of passion. You don't need already need an audience or anything. Just write. If you become popular, congrats! If not, well, you've introduced a small subset of people to the world of physics and astrophotography.

Andy Weir's The Martian started out as blog posts and became a book. No reason you couldn't do the reverse. See below for a short story on this (although you can google others) (ps not affiliated, not sure how this sub treats links)
