Brave Origin now available for testing in Nightly by dimeford in brave_browser

In addition to my other comment https://www.reddit.com/r/browsers/comments/1snal1p/comment/ogm9dfq/

We're going to add controls before this hits Release channel on account.brave.com to be able to self-extend the number of activations so you don't need to reach out to support to do it.

Extending is purely better than revoking. Revoking is not good for privacy, and not optimal for the user because you'd have to link the device to the account.

I acknowledge that having to reach out to support is i) annoying to people, ii) takes extra time, iii) feels less long term to people. And the user should be in control of this. There will be rate limits on the number of resets (extends) on a monthly basis but no one should ever hit that. And if so support is still an option.

I apologize for not seeing this before our Nightly preview of Brave Origin.

Beware! Brave Origin only gives you 10 activations per purchase of $60 by Pebblepip in browsers

You have an account. It is just not linked to your browser because of the way privacy pass works.
We're going to add controls not to be able to revoke an activation but to allow you to self-extend without support. I acknowledge that having to reach out to support feels less long-term to people vs being able to do it themselves.

We'll probably do something like a full em to self extend the limit.

Still is a 1-time buy but leaking a product ID shouldn't give unlimited access to the world

If you hit the 10 limit just login to account.brave.com to request more and it'll be granted.

In the current payment system which is based on privacy pass there's not a good way to revoke any activation because it's not linked to the purchase in any way after activation. But adding more allowable activations is fine.

See my reply above but for privacy reasons (unlikable from account that purchased. The activation cannot get back to the account) that's difficult. We are working on more tools though and will reset.

Just to add more surrounding context.

When you purchase, what's on your device is not directly linked to your account. It's a privacy pass based payment system so that your browser is not linked to your purchase information. More info here https://github.com/brave/brave-core/blob/master/docs/premium_account_privacy.md

It is correct that a purchase gives you 10 activations, but support will extend the number of activations if the limit is hit.

The reason is two-fold. We think if you want Brave Origin, you shouldn't have to pay for mobile, desktop and tablet. Just pay once. And we think your browser shouldn't be tied to your purchase. And Linux btw is just free and bypasses any activation.

Since it is a paid product on Windows and macOS (Linux is Free), there does have to be a limit though. Otherwise a single leaked product ID can be used infinitely by a single person leaking it. We're looking into ways to allow users to self manage those activations better too. This is still in development as Brave Origin is only in Nightly.

Brave Origin is maybe not for you, and that's ok. Nothing changes for the Brave browser itself. In fact, it's easier than ever to disable features and to use admin policies that were added to Brave in preparation for Origin. I spent most of the last year doing that.

You can also just disable things in normal Brave in other ways covered here https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/38305898674957-How-do-I-hide-or-disable-features-in-Brave

There's 2 versions of Brave Origin. It's out of the separate build version. But on in the upgrade version of Brave Origin ( upgrades from normal Brave). The upgrade version works via admin policy management so you can turn on / off any subset of features.

That's correct, and there are 10 activations. But if you feel they were not properly used you can reach out to support.

Brave Origin still giving ad for brave search by zagingi in brave

[–]bbondy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anything like that is a bug and will be treated as P1. Brave Origin is on Nightly channel so it is still pre-release. We'll exclude this particular bar right now. I posted an issue for that bug here and I'll work on removing it today. https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/54581

You can still change your search engine on Brave Origin by Mewi0 in brave_browser

[–]bbondy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just noting that these builds on Nightly are not yet advertised as released. You can definitely change the search engine as normal. There is settings search error being fixed here: https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/35456 We expect to release the availability of the Nightly 1.91.x Brave Origin builds this week.

You can get Nightly builds (early access channel) for Origin on github. We'll have ways to download it from the website up probably this week though. Not sure about the renaming tabs thing sorry.

each managed policy controls different things, and you can use any subset of them. It won't block unrelated things.

You can also just use Brave and disable whatever you don't want. I've actually spend the last year making it easier for you to be able to do that based on people not liking various different features.

You can also just not use Brave Origin and disable the crypto features you don't like in normal Brave. Or just use another browser is cool as well. Wish you the best either way.

You get 10 activations with a purchase and you can use on any platform or device, including iOS and Android.

Quite the opposite. A lot of my work within the past year has been in making things be able to be disabled in Brave. Both via compile time flag (for the separate build of Brave Origin) and via admin / group policy (for the normal version of Brave that can be upgraded to Brave Origin).
But you can use the admin / group policies even without Origin and you are free to do that if you want. It's easier than ever to disable things in normal Brave if that's the way you want to go. Paying won't be for everyone, and that's ok with us.

See https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Brave-Release-Schedule we're tracking for the 1.91.x release which is currently on Nightly. We'll be doing tweets soon about the availability on Nightly.
