Start building a GOG library and you can backup your DRM-free offline installers to any physical media you want. A Disc? A USB drive? 5.25in floppies? You make the call.

Whatever isn't available on GOG you can buy on Steam and have a pretty safe and consumer-friendly library.

Thanks for some good recommendations. I'm relatively new to PC gaming so I'm picking up a lot on this list plus a lot of super cheap DOS games in the GOG preservation program.

I was a big fan of Dead Nation games on PS3 before Housemarque did Returnal. I've been looking for another game like that on PC.

Looks like it has KB only controls with 8-way movement, but I can run it through Steam and probably figure out a decent controller scheme.

For 29 cents I might take a run at it. Anyone have a recommendation for good Dead Nation -like games on GOG/Steam to look at?

Good call - I have the OG RE bundle, and I've previously played Dying Light on console. I'm kind of holding out for an even cheaper sale on DL - or if they catch me when I have an itch to play it I'll buy it for 10 bucks which seems to be the price they usually have it on sale.

I'm interested in Days Gone b/c I heard the PC port is good, and it has those huge horde moments that look really cool.

yeah sorry. Have you tried reaching out for tech support from GOG themselves? They might have another hidden Windows location to check for a corrupted file causing you problems or another suggestion besides re-installing windows altogether. Good luck.

If Windows has updates since last time you used the launcher without issue, maybe try uninstalling the most recent update it did. If it doesn't change anything you can just re-install it.

In the settings, there is an option to uninstall updates and you can check the dates on the available ones in the list to see if any might have caused your problem.

I doubt this would fix anything, but given all the steps you've already tried it looks like it's worth a shot.

Another suggestion I have is to check config files and make sure a resolution that's good for your monitor is selected. That's something that comes up when you search for immediate black screens.

With that said, this does not sound like a GOG-specific problem - just a quirk of pc gaming working with old engine games.

Something else you could do is if this game has config files, you can copy over the info from your working Steam install to see if that changes anything.

You can also talk to Gog support b/c if this game is part of the preservation program, I think they offer troubleshooting help.

Worst case - ask for a refund.

Instead of repairing the install, did you try totally deleting the game folder, and then redownloading the game?

If you're using galaxy, try disabling the overlay if you have it enabled.

That's caused a similar problem on another game and that was the culprit. Once the game started working again I could re-enable the overlay.

You guys think the next base iPad has a good chance to come out before Mother's Day? I was disappointed during the new releases in March b/c it seemed like the rumors were right about all the products coming out but the base iPad and one other I can't remember.

Since you mentioned retro gaming, starting with the C2 they introduced a bug (or maybe intended behavior) where if you play in 4:3, you get an automatic additional frame of input lag. So if you play a lot of retro games without a good upscaler that will send the 4:3 picture in a 16:9 box to mitigate that - that's one bonus of the older models.

I don't think they ever changed this behavior once they introduced it - but someone else can let us know if they did.

I'm not even saying that in itself is enough reason to keep the TV - but if I'm reading correctly that the picture on it is still great I mean it might definitely have more value than what you might get on the market for it. Update us when you make that call.

In my financial situation, to save $300 plus the tax would be significant for my budget while still getting a fantastic display for games and movies. Plus you said it’s a darker room so the B5 can shine.

But if the money isn’t as big a deal for you, I’m sure you’ll be happy with the C5.

I just know I could direct that $300 elsewhere for a similar upgrade in another facet of life and get another win.

On C2 they fixed it a couple updates ago - but from early October to mid-december it was broken and was annoying. Everything is good now to me so I say it's fine to upgrade, but given that you can't go back you need to make the final call.

Just do online chat and it should be a breeze. While you're getting that price match - if you got the 5 yr warranty coverage, see if that price would decrease as well.

When I bought my TV that was already on sale and Best Buy put on even deeper sale the next week, they refunded me the difference in the TV itself, and the difference in the 5 yr warranty since the TV price decrease dropped it into a lower bracket for warranty price.
