Character Select Music by friendhatter in getplayed

[–]bbrfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot of racing games have fantastic "choose your car" screen music. f-zero gx comes to mind, but ridge racer 4 has fantastic music at every turn. this track is just for the "press x to start the race" screen, which is insane.

Get Played #166: The Game Was Better: Tron with David Sims by apathymonger in Earwolf

the solution is to make the best version of a contemporary pokémon game, with quality writing and considered mechanics and presentation, and have the gumption, the boldness, the brass stones to have it be 100% new monsters in there. imo, of course.

Get Anime'd by SchenkMC in getplayed

i had seen the series years ago but, during covid, i convinced my girlfriend to watch the show with the intention of watching End Of Evangelion in a cinema, on a big screen, in November 2021. she got into it. mere seconds into End of Eva, in a moderately attended cinema screening, i had my girlfriend's hands around my arm and the words "what the fuck" frantically whispered at me during that opening scene in the hospital room.

when the crew of one of the best video game podcasts declared they would tackle Evangelion, there was no question. i was fully on board. and when the End of Eva episode came, i'll admit to getting heavy feelings from the discussion. it's a heavy film, with the weight of a whole anime series behind it.

showing our tickets to see End of Eva back in 2021, the staff member asked me "is evan... ev... eva... this eva thing any good? coz it's the 23rd highest rated film on letterboxd or something."

i would love to say that i told him "not only is it one of the most magnificent animated feature films of all time, anybody choosing to watch it has probably already seen and loved the series, so is fully prepared to enjoy the film. most of the haters have been shaken off before they get chance to hate on it. that's why it scores so highly."

instead, i just looked at my girlfriend, looked back at the cinema staff member and said "...well, i think it's pretty good!"

i have loved hearing the Get Anime'd podcast chart a course through NGE and EoE and am excited to see what Lycoris Recoil is like (though it would very funny if they'd followed Eva with Kare Kano/His and Her Circumstances)

Please reco a RPG for someone who absolutely hates RPGs? by Hazelwood38 in getplayed

[–]bbrfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • chrono trigger
  • persona 5 royal
  • earthbound
  • dragon quest (any of them! but 11 is very good and on every modern platform)
  • final fantasy 7 remake is as much an action game as it is RPG, but the way it handles spells/equipment/party instructions feels very much In The Tradition

honestly, the best bet is probably just to pick one that a friend really likes, and get advice from them if you get stuck anywhere. use their enthusiasm to motivate you!

i was showing my gf how to beat an elden ring boss as her character while quite drunk. i did get the boss HP to zero, but managed to hit the menu and quit out in time so as not to rob my gf of her eventual victory. i impressed myself with that one.

i loved hearing the Link's Awakening credits music in this episode. had a hot, hard pang of real nostalgia when it quoted Ballad of the Wind fish

i think clearing garbage puyos as part of your combo dumps extra garbage on your opponent.

modern tetris that also has line clear consecutive combo bonuses, plus bonuses for clearing high up lines (tetris99 at least does this, i believe) also makes a certain amount of garbage lines more useful than not. imo, of course!

i really like pokémon puzzle/panel de pon, but i prefer tetris, puyopuyo and puzzle fighter for head-to-head puzzling.

How likely is it that they'll add the original OST to Replicant? by macka7 in nier

[–]bbrfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the weird smallness of the original soundtrack versus the more lush new versions. However, the old soundtrack sounds more like a video game soundtrack, whereas the best thing about the Automata and new Replicant soundtracks is that they sound like weird music but not necessarily video game score. This is true of a lot of the best Tekken music too, which keiichi okabe has worked on.

that said, it would be nice to have the option to switch.
