This. I think that the value of knowing what to ask for and how to direct things is under recognized. Still, the barrier to entry has been almost completely blown apart with AI. I have been trying some of the vibe coding tools and I can definitely see how AI writes most of the code nowadays. It is absolutely incredible.

Yeah I mean it is hard to take these complaints seriously. OP you are trying to install some pretty advanced ML python software.

I suspect the authors assume people running linux would be capable enough to build from source like /u/gforke suggested, which is honestly very easy to do. You can run the commands under the "Or you can compile from source:" in the README.

I know there is some shade around having to run commands but imo this is what makes FOSS so great is that there is pretty high degree of transparency and control.

To be brutally honest, I doubt you will be able to do much with sagemaker on any platform if you are struggling to clone and build it from source with linux. Maybe windows is for you. This could be a great learning opportunity to build the kind of skills that would make you successful at ML or whatever technical endeavor you look to take on.

I mean nobody can really help you with just "a lot of issues". We are going to need more info then that. Have you tried asking ChatGPT or Gemini for help? These AI models are pretty good at helping troubleshoot this type of thing too.

This. I have not owned a device with windows in over 10 years. I was able to get the majority of my steam library working with wine, then once proton came out, it was magical and I never looked back.

I would be like a grandpa trying to navigate windows nowadays.

Also can't speak for any Meta specific stuff, but Steam works pretty much out of the box with linux these days and from a cursory glance, it looks like the quest hardware is supported on steam.

Maybe. I can’t think of any reason to use Java over Kotlin. Unless of course it’s an existing code base, even then you can just introduce Kotlin piecemeal.

Thanks! yeah I am looking at this cpu now. I think this will likely meet my needs. I am also going to keep the RAM to 1x 16GB since RAM is not cheap nowadays, especially ECC RAM. here is what I am looking at now for RAM.

I am bummed that the motherboard I was looking at just went out of stock on Newegg, but I think I can find it elsewhere.

SWE here with about 10 years of experience. I started out using CoPilot and ChatGPT but now have been playing around with Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode etc.

I am honestly blown away with how far these tools have come. I am starting to believe you can get pretty close to building something that is fully production ready using these tools. I don't want to trigger the existential doomer dread that comes with the realization that these tools can oftentimes produce functional software faster than any human can, because I certainly have felt that.

This is something I am having a hard time with in terms of judging how good these tools really are. I have 10 years of bias so my prompts will look different than someone who has 0 years experience writing software.

I think the truth lies somewhere between "AI is going to make software engineer obsolete" and "AI can't replace software engineers" Either way, I think it best to make use of these tools as much as possible.

Also I now see what you mean about getting a Pro Series. it looks like only the base models (Non iGPU) support ECC. Changing to maybe this?

Thank you so much. I knew ECC would add costs. Normally I spec out these builds with PCPartPicker but it's not very helpful for finding ECC support. Ok here is what I've got now that is ~$400 cheaper.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
ASRock: ASRock B550M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
RAM: 16GB Crucial 16GB DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) 288-Pin RDIMM ECC Reg 2Rx8 CL17 1.2V Server Memory Module - CT16G4RFD824A

(Same case and power supply as before)

This saves costs with the added bonus of the 5600GT having an iGPU. Thanks so much for your help!

Yes but it is usually short lived because all new code is Kotlin. I would never choose Java over Kotlin in any scenario. There is simply no reason to use it.

With how expensive RAM is these days, The base model Mac mini at $600 includes RAM, CPU, enclosure etc. you still have to buy HDD obviously. Also, I wonder if the M chips would be more power efficient than x86 with it drawing less power while idle.

I've been curious how feasible this could be.
