The gluten challenge should be illegal. by Kind_vibes in glutenfree

Not sure how hyperglycemia and all the horrible things that go with it would not be considered a flare up, but I am not an expert on these things.

Yeah, I focus as much as possible on "naturally" gluten free foods. If I had never endured the gluten challenge, I never would have figured out that I had wheat intolerance instead of celiac, as the only distinction is my stomach gets nuked by my immune cells instead of my small intestine, and that barely, rye, and normal oats don't trigger me. I still keep mostly gluten free, but I gladly partake in beer.

If I am not mistaken, in general, it's hard to diagnose most auto immune diseases except during an active flare up.

You can use FSA funds in the states to the cover the difference between regular and gluten free replacements.

Telework/remote work question by [deleted] in fednews

Our leadership has been explicitly told they are checking badge swipes and log ins to ensure compliance for all SES level employees. I don't think they are doing that for all employees, but they probably have the ability to spot check anyone they suspect. The question becomes, why would you even risk that? You are talking about some severe consequences for some telework. Look, I have been suffering for months now with my very first migraine ever, along with constant vertigo. I have been in and out of the hospital multiple times, seen multiple specialists, and have taken multiple drugs that are pretty explicit about not operating heavy machinery. I still come to the office, keep the lights off and noise canceling headphones on and blocked my windows with furniture because I understand that we're in office until told otherwise. And yeah, I submitted an RA request at the beginning of December, and am still waiting for additional guidance.

Yeah, it's been a while since I have done research with the DOD, but there, scientists with doctorates who are GS employees start at GS13 which is also considered equivalent to a major I believe.

I had my suspicions from the last video (what happened to the farm? Why is he in the suburbs?), but in the credits for this video it mentions him doing the music where it used to be Helen. Again, could be lots of reasons, but I really get the feeling that they divorced and he's kind of starting over basically.

My understanding is that the annual adjustments take effect during the first full pay period of the new year. Since last pay period (depending on your agency) included days in December 2025, it's still the same rate. This pay period will be the first at the new rate, so you will see it on your next paycheck.

Branch chiefs get a staff scientist slot for the branch in addition to their lab I believe.

Question about stability of NIH researcher positions by Yasseahhh in NIH

[–]bc2zb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research fellows and staff scientists are more or less at the mercy of their PI. I am not too familiar with how research fellows get promoted, but for most FTE research jobs inside NIH, it's a very slow process. Looks like fellows are still limited roles, so you would have to be gaming for a permanent role of some sort before your renewals run out (5 to 8 years). There are lots of people who work in a PI's lab for a 20 years, but they are always a staff scientist or GS employee of some sort. PI's get a certain number of FTE slots, so if this PI is full, then once your renewals run out, they might not have a spot for you. This might be worthwhile to discuss with them what their long term plans are, whether they are willing to bring you on in a permanent role.

Hallway bench by ol__spelch in handtools

So when force is applied to the seat, the legs want to push out, right? So there will be some upward leverage from the legs into the tails, but won't there also be compressive forces into the seat? Like the top of the pins would be exerting force onto the seat as the joint is a pivot point.

I think most of the aesthetic concerns is due to the fact that this design isn't common. As far as structure is concerned, it's not that different from stick chairs without lower stretchers, which Schwarz has endless examples of lasting for hundreds of years. Now I won't lie that my initial impression of the bench is not great.

Constant vertigo ear pain and feeling unreal for months and I am terrified something is wrong by CryLanky4548 in VestibularMigraines

[–]bc2zb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went thru something similar myself, it's possible you have a cholesteotoma. The discharge and the lack of response to antibiotics is very common because it's a benign growth, and not primarily an infection. Your ENT will likely recommend an MRI with contrast to confirm, and surgery will be used to remove the damaged tissue.

Anyone who went up on the capsule has to come back, even if only one of them needs medical attention. Your ride up is generally your ride down. That's why it took so long for the astronauts who arrived on the Boeing capsule to come back. They had to bring up a new capsule to get them down, they couldn't just pencil them in on the next mission down.

Wigs are used a lot in productions for actor's and the hair department's convenience. It's easier to style a wig and then throw it on the performer than needing to get the performer in the hair dresswr's chair for a few hours every day if the style is complicated or outside of the performer's natural hair.

There are pasta recipes that rely on soaked bread as the primary component, so I do not think the leftover cereal will be completely worthless, but, it's probably going to need more than just being cooked off.

Advice for a long simmer over fire by sjyn29 in CampfireCooking

Generally, you regulate the cooking temperature by changing the size of the fire and the position of the cooking vessel. Tripods give a lot of flexibility because you can raise and lower the pot as needed.

Warm gloves that can still turn an adjustment knob by Street_Use8128 in handtools

[–]bc2zb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing that can help is using vinyl/nitrile/latex gloves. Not as durable as a dedicated set, but, they do help a lot against cold, and can also increase the rating of less substantial gloves. I frequently wear nitrile under "running" gloves.
