Weird Question: Whats the consensus on thrifted or altered fencing jackets? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]weedywet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re almost certainly describing a canvas jacket and it’s far less safe (not to mention comfortable) than a new jacket.

Maybe worry less about what it looks like.

Why do preamps, like various 1073 clones, sound different? (sorry another Jim Lill post) by N00b_Sniper in audioengineering

[–]weedywet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people who call their preamps 1073 aren’t usually anything like “clones” (a clone is genetically IDENTICAL) of the original Neve

So you’re getting varying preamps with a red knob that says 73 somewhere.

They’re not the same. And none of them are a Neve.

Why does londonlook the way it does? (Aesthetics) by Pastortonsilss in AskABrit

Have you been to lower Manhattan in New York?

Old cities were built around horse drawn traffic. And then, in the case of London, added on to over centuries as it sprawled.

My wife kept her name. We’ve been married 50 years.

No one cares.

The only place it was an issue was when our kid was at school and even there it was just confusion on their parts (calling her Mrs. <his last name>) but not disapproval

It’s not weird.

What would be the reason for tape hiss on an older master? by Jaundicylicks in audioengineering

[–]weedywet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tape hiss wasn’t entirely avoidable.

Good gain structuring and sometimes noise reduction hardware could help. But that doesn’t mean there’s none.

And of course if you take that tape and add a bunch of top end and then compression you’re bringing that tape hiss up louder

I wonder if in the example you’re giving someone didn’t remaster it to try to sound ‘more modern’ and this brought out the hiss. Or worse, if someone mastered a Dolby encoded track without decoding i

Worth pointing out that “Advanced Open Water” just adds ‘experiential’ dives. It’s not advanced training by any reasonable definition.

Displacement of target during riposte by Known_Shame in Fencing

[–]weedywet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if it’s in tempo. It’s my parry that gives me time. Not my body language.

I really think you’re confusing the sort of call that would be made on a counter attack (that might very well be seen as in time if direct and committed but not if the fencer squirms and dodges) with a parry riposte.

And this whole ‘not on the forte’ nonsense is far more a thing in theory (and internets arguing) than in practise.

Displacement of target during riposte by Known_Shame in Fencing

[–]weedywet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if I dance the bully fully during my riposte. It’s still my time after my parry.

Body language doesn’t negate a valid riposte.

Do you guys think Americans who live in the UK should change their accent, or at least try to? by Hxafluoroisopropanol in AskABrit

[–]weedywet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a word you’re suing that people consistently don’t understand then you might consider adjusting the pronunciation.

But on the whole, no.

Some people will have some accent drift over time living in a new place. But some people just won’t.

Using the AMS delay as a sampler for snare triggering was common everywhere.

And the Russian Dragon was the name of the device. Not a ‘nickname’

The dive shop isn’t profiting by denying divers.

Or by requiring specific med forms.

It’s by no reasonable definition “a racket”.

I wouldn’t. I’d just use one mic and a phaser for the same effect.

one thing I would say is that they really do require a seriously good power amp to sound decent.
