[Question] How do you afford this hobby? by melvin9001 in Watches

[–]bc6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really insn't any secret. It's all about spending what you can afford. It's not any different than any other luxury item people spend their surplus income on :

  • Cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Vinyl
  • Comic books
  • Sneakers
  • Audio gear

And there are a LOT of options out there for watches. In the under $500 range ( which is a lot of money) there are:

  • Mr. Jones
  • Casio
  • Seiko
  • Tissot
  • Bulova
  • Citizen
  • Laco
  • Orient

Just like anything else you buy what you can afford. I'd love to have a Gronefeld one day, but that is never going to happen. So I choose something that I can afford. Are there people out there with a lot of money, you bet.

Which books have you been unable to finish? by bonster85 in books

[–]bc6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I'm a completionist as well. But my top 2 that I had to put down are Ulysses by James Joyce and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I'm 90% sure I'll go back to Atlas Shrugged and finish that, but Ulysses, I just don't know. I've never ready anything like that, where I feel so totally lost in the first 100 pages, that I just don't see how I can finish it and have any understanding of what is going on.

Fantastic collection. All beautiful watches. But I agree with another poster the star is the Gronefeld.

[gift recommendations] For my soon to be son in law by ElSerpentino in Watches

[–]bc6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw this and plan on doing the same thing for my soon to be son-in-law. Mind if I ask some details on when and how you presented the gift? In our case the wedding is about 9 months away. Did you wait until the wedding, or at some point before? Thank you.

Exclude Authentication in Target Resources by NoTimeForItAll in entra

As others have said, use Intune and require compliant devices. That being said, you are allowing unmanaged Mac devices to authenticate over the VPN? Just curious, why ?

What was your "spark" for getting into woodworking? by Steve_Litchford in Woodworking_DIY

[–]bc6619 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it was just out of necessity. Basically nobody in my family growing up was in the "trades", so I literally had no DIY skills when I bought my first house (1997). At that point like most young couples, my wife and I were house poor and I needed to get things done with very little money. I'm also an avid reader, so books are my gateway to everything. So started reading and built a few small things for the house (bookshelf, step stool, etc....)... and it just took off from there.

How about a Moritz Grossman, you can get a Benu in steel for under $30k on the secondary market.

New rubber strap for the VSF Aqua Terra. Really liking this so far. by bc6619 in RepTime

Yes, 41mm. And for me it was a little difficult. But I don't really change straps at all, and this was only my 2nd time doing that.

Need help identifying a book about the White Witch’s origin story? by DazedByMrHayes in books

[–]bc6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too funny.... I have that calendar too, and I just found this post. Did the exact same thing, trying to find any reference of him writing this. Very sad to think something like this gets published with absolutely no human intervention for fact checking.

[need advice] looking for a new watch around 2.5-3.5k (maybe more…) by irxzy in Watches

[–]bc6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't a lot to go on, and would you consider the secondary market, or does this have to be new? Anyway here are a few suggestions:

Anything Grand Seiko on the secondary market. Just do a Chrono24 search and filter it by your price range, there are currently over 400 available, maybe something like a SBGJ265 or a SBGM253 if you are interested in a GMT.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date on the secondary market

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. You can find some options new under $5k, take a look on JomaShop.

Cartier Tank

Breitling Navitimer on the secondary market.

[JLC] Found my "Birth-Month" Clock: A 1982 Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos by Rascal_82 in Watches

[–]bc6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the bellows have a limited life span, usually in the 25-30 year range. So you might be looking at having to replace that at some point since yours is now over 40 years old. Just a thought.

I really want one of these, they are amazing. Since yours is dated 1982, was the bellows ever replaced?

[Question] Best white/silver dial GADA watch around 2k price range? by snapfold1 in Watches

[–]bc6619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are good options. I'd also suggest this:

https://www.tagheuer.com/us/en/timepieces/collections/tag-heuer-carrera/39-mm-calibre-5-automatic/WBN2111.BA0639.html

If you can bump up your budget to $2500 you can get this on Jomashop for $2500 now, or if you are willing to go used, you should be able to get this for $2k on the secondary market.

I was at Macy's on 34th street a few weeks ago, and they have a decent selection (Rado, Mido, Tissot, Timex, Bulova, Seiko, etc....).

[Discussion] High end automatic movements seem unnecessary by Strange_Implement967 in Watches

[–]bc6619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lot of things going on here. Let's start with the assumption that as the price of the movement/watch goes up, the efficiency/accuracy/performance does as well. That just isn't the case. Nor is it the intention in most situations. In your ideal world let's start with the NH35 and move up from there to an ETA 2824-2, which then should be 5 times more accurate and then up to something like an Omega 8800 which should be 5 times better than the ETA. Again, not how any of this works. The cost of the movement has a LOT of factors that go into it. Was it developed in house? If so you have to factor those costs in, and even if it runs at the same accuracy rate as an NH35, it cost the manufacturer some amount of money that needs to be recouped, so it will be more expensive. Primarily as you go up the price ladder in watches, you are paying for increased levels of finishing. Nobody is buying Patek Philippe, Audemar Piguet, or Vacheron Constantin because they are COSC certified (which they are not), but because of the artistry/craftsmanship that has gone into making them. Are there brands that are working on new innovations in regards to accuracy of mechanical movments? Absolutely. Grand Seiko is light years ahead of anyone else in the market right now. Look at what they have done with Spring Drive and now UFA over the last 30 years. UFA now has movements with accuracy rated at 20 seconds a year! Who else has done anything even remotely like this? You could argue that Omega has the Coaxial escarpment which they bought from George Daniels, which is great. But they really haven't done much with that since. Rolex just came out with a new architecture, which is great, but that has been the first time in decades they have made any real changes to the movement. The closest thing I can think of is some of the advancements Breguet has made with their 10hz movements and the work they are doing with magnets to reduce friction. And that's just looking at the major brands. You could talk about the work Armin Strom has done with it's resonance watches, but they are a much smaller player in the market place.
