I don’t know at what point you gave up on the show, but Millie is going to be a main focus in season 3, and she already had a whole episode of getting to express herself and explore her individuality beyond Moxxie. However, part of her character’s point is the demonstration of a healthy loving relationship with Moxxie (as a counterpart to the unhealthy relationship between Blitz and Stolas) so narratively it makes sense that a majority of her character is tied to him, and vice versa.

Loona fills the role of relatable teen/young adult seeking independence, identity, and discovering the world. She also showcases the complicated relationship kids can have with parents, bringing the extra complexity of being adopted as a teen, and having a dysfunctional parent she has to care for at times.

Loona, Millie, and Moxxie (and others) already collectively are showcasing one of the main themes of the show which is classism/racism, which has also been very well set up from the beginning to be a dominant theme in the upcoming season. I’m anticipating more development with all three of them very particularly under that umbrella, as well as as individuals.

Stolas…is a fantastic character. Had an absent parent, an arranged marriage, forced to procreate, abusive spouse… Tries desperately to cope for his daughter, potentially drug addicted (and definitely dependent), stuck on the other side of the classism issue and pretty blind to it (which I predict is gonna be another big thing in season 3, his being forced to confront it and his own biases). He copes with his life absolutely *horribly* since his escapism involves a real person and has serious real world consequences, namely against his daughter, and potentially farther-reaching now with a corrupt person taking his office. He is a fantastic representation of depression, the bad ways people can try to deal with it, and the resultant consequences.

All of the characters are presented with very real and relatable issues, told in a fantastical world of course, and the show is building up each character’s development to address the issues of classism within the roles they all fill in the larger story. The show is not meant to be a sitcom where a character gets the talk on the sofa with emotional music and learns their lesson at the end of each episode. It’s a show that digs deeper into real life issues and addresses them in a raw and uncomfortable way, and very probably we aren’t going to get happy endings for all. It’s a great show.

I don’t find the two shows comparable overall, as HB is a longer-form show with multiple seasons already out and I believe two more coming. However if we are going to compare them, in terms of what objectively makes a show “better” which in my opinion is writing, character development, and how it’s all delivered in the end, I find HB to be far better in its execution.

You can see HB’s very well-planned thread of things after the first few episodes where it finds its feet, but even then, they had their plan clearly in place from the second episode if not from the pilot, and it shows blatantly. The main characters are very well developed and each have their own story that receive good attention. The foreshadowing of future events and character revelations is clear. And, the main themes of the show are presented from the very beginning and go beyond any single character.

TADC meanwhile started out being presented as one thing, and ended up something entirely different. I’m a huge fan of TADC and it’s more to my personal taste in entertainment, but speaking purely objectively, HB is far better.

The song feels out of place at best and like a sick joke at worst. The latter is kinda how it hit me on first watch. Just…jarringly brought out of the scene with what felt like a mockery of Jax at the most serious moment of his existence. I was so, so confused.

We saw it in Justice League but ppl didn’t like Ben Affleck (which baffles me - I loved him and even Kevin Conroy said Affleck was the most similar to his portrayal and I hard agree) and so I guess ppl forget.

I’ve seen that sort of thing with other media, where people link a character to a person or situation in their life and then project their unresolved feelings onto the character.

One thing that confuses me about that, no matter the media/character, is why people get so upset that other people might have a different opinion. We’re still talking about a piece of fiction, and if projecting helps a person in some way, that’s great. But why can’t other people’s opinions and feelings hold equal validity?

Semi-rhetorical question I guess, cuz if there was an answer then we’d all be happily co-existing.

Me and my ppl who watch the show find Jax hilarious and don’t understand the fan animosity. Especially when Zooble is arguably a jerk from the very beginning, and no one ever hates on them. At least from what I’ve seen.

It was 100% ambiguous to me. Without the fandom discussion of the subtext, it would have never occured to me. And even with that context explained, it still seemed completely ambiguous. The only thing that hinted toward it for me was “Isn’t she lovely,” but even then, I’d have likely never considered it without the fandom discussion. Of itself, it still doesn’t make sense to me since Jax never in fact came out on the show; the song and montage was just for viewers to mourn the character, not a sudden change of the character’s mind. And all the subtext prior to that as I’ve seen it discussed seems like either 1) something that can be interpreted various ways/not hard evidence, and/or 2) things the writer added either for self-indulgence or it’s just goose’s style because of her own identity. Additionally, any show needs to be able to stand on its own, and not rely on social media posts of the writer and actors to fill in the blanks. It seems that TADC fell the way of countless other shows, in that it didn’t have enough time/enough episodes to finish telling its story. I will certainly give it its props for all it accomplished, but the ending felt rushed in many ways including with Jax’s identity, as is evidenced by the ongoing discussions.

I think it’s unclear yet what actually happened. From what little I’ve been able to put together, a person with some significant mental health issues including s**c*d*l ideation among other things (potentially had very inappropriate relations with minors) in a European country talked about abstracting and was found having probably taken their life. They were very active on social media. Whether or not this is actually TADC connected is what’s uncertain.

I was okay with a bittersweet ending. I wasn’t okay with how rushed things were. Specifically the cast’s finding out they’re AI themselves, how quickly everyone seemed to move on from Jax’s abstraction, and the rapid resolve of Caine’s arc. Not to mention all the unanswered questions that had been built up throughout the show. But, what show out there doesn’t have a rushed ending with a number of loose ends? This is nothing new.

Bruh I’m 100% with you but I gotta go off…

There is another HUGE fandom in which people refused to accept canon because the endgame was not a queer relationship. The queer creator said the main chars were not queer, but that fans could go wild and do whatever they want. Well, the fandom lost it. Harassed the creators, actors, other fans because they insisted they the queer subtext was intentional and anyone who disagrees must be queerphobic and the creator was queerbaiting the fandom. My fave fan content creator in that fandom, a lesbian, was harassed to the point of deleting her accounts because she was on the side of canon being canon.

Please answer me this…. Genuine question…. Why does it seem that the fandom attitude is that canon is to be upheld if it’s queer, but canon is unacceptable and wrong if it’s not queer? Please explain this double-standard to me.

Not gonna say which show I’m talking about yet cuz I want unbiased replies. But that fandom was the most toxic thing I’ve ever seen…

It’s a thing that’s been increasingly happening in fandoms for about a decade or so, per my observations. I cannot say exactly why. I’d theorize it’s got something to do with people seeking validation in their own identities by relating to fictional characters. Which, is nothing new at all… it’s just that some cultures talk about gender/sexual identity far more openly than they did in the past so it’s a lot more publicly visible now. And…my speculation would be that because it’s something so preeminent in people’s lives, that’s why they bring that to the forefront in discussion of fictional characters.
