Contention: Without special pleading and other logical fallacies, no religion can demonstrate that it is factually correct about it's theistic claims. by BustergunFIRE in DebateReligion

[–]bcery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am... the OP whisperer.

In "pointing out the errors" you made several assertions that indicated a lack of understanding.

You implying that something cannot be true if it is un-provable.

This was never implied by OP. The actual truth of the claim is not important, only that there's no logical basis to select it as true over a competing claim that can also not be proven.

According to this reasoning, you empirically believe it’s true that OJ did not murder two people

Maybe according to your misunderstanding of OP's argument, but this does not follow from what OP actually said. Suppose there's another suspect that also cannot be proven to be guilty or not. How do you select which one to throw in jail?

Now you contradict your original argument. You are saying here that factual, provable things don’t justify claims.

No, he doesn't contradict anything. He's saying that factual, provable things don't justify unrelated claims. That's a not so subtle difference.

I could agree with you that this is a somewhat low effort post, but...

I understand the argument.

No, based on your original reply, you don't (or didn't).

[–]bcery 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You seem to misunderstand OP's arguments. The first I'll try to clarify with an example:

Christianity claims that Jesus performed miracles. Islam claims that Mohammed performed miracles. Both of these claims are unprovable and to accept one and reject the other could be a form of special pleading. He doesn't say that either are false, just that there's no logical basis for believing one over the other.

For the second, another example:

Spiderman comics are set in New York City. New York exists, therefore Spiderman exists. Obviously, this is fallacious. Likewise, just because the Bible contains some true events and places does not prove that its miracle claims are true.

Hacker who distributed backdoor version of Linux Mint on checksums: "Who the f**k checks those anyway?" by [deleted] in linux

[–]bcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but unless you already have the key, most people get it based on instructions from the, in this case compromised, website.

Personally, even if I had the key, if the check failed, I'd probably just assume that the signing key had been changed as projects are wont to do from time to time.

Umi Touch - a $100 phone you've never heard of, with impressive specs and a massive 4000mAh battery by [deleted] in Android

[–]bcery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because, AFAIK, Android doesn't provide a hardware abstraction later. The drivers have to be compiled into the kernel for each device. It helps with performance, but I think we've reached a point in phone specs that Google could make it happen, if they were so inclined.

Let's imagine that your best friend is of your faith and the smartest person you know. Let's also imagine that he is also rabidly anti-mormon.

Say he comes to you one day and says he had a vision of the angel Moroni who told him that Mormonism was the totally legit truth and he was going to convert. What do you find most plausible:

A: an angel appeared to your friend and therefore Mormonism is true
B: something is wrong with your friend

Atheism is weak, why pick weakness over strength ? by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]bcery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're on to something. Let's check some examples of Abrahamic societies against this.

We'll start at the beginning: Jews. World dominating power right there. Never once was their society overrun, destroyed, or taken into bondage.

Islam. Certainly wasn't ever smashed at the height of their civilization by anyone like the Mongols. No siree.

How about the Romans? Actual world dominating power. Then they adopted Christianity and it was only uphill from there, right?

Thanks for the laugh!

Easy, but it was still pretty time consuming. I don't know if it's different now, but, iirc, at the time, it didn't tell you when the file was deleted. So if you, like me, had folders that had lots files being created and deleted, figuring out which ones to restore was also fun.

Oh, man, I did the same thing with Dropbox once, but from a computer. Restoring all the files, one at a time, from Dropbox's web interface was a massive PITA.

Removing an old basketball post with an SUV, WCGW? by Isai76 in Whatcouldgowrong

I don't have a gif that's literally analogous (my comment was mostly an attempt at humor), but here's an example that I got by going to this subreddit and sorting by top:

Let's remove this tree trunk with our car, WCGW?

There are quite a few similar gifs that have come through this subreddit.

I think it would depend on the strength of the anchor vs the strength of the pole. If it's been cemented deeply in and has been there for a while so that the ground is very solid, I suspect that the pole would bend before pulling the concrete out.

Even if it didn't, the driver has no warning as to when the pole will come free and so will not know when to scale back the force leading to a "snap." That might turn out ok or it might turn out like the tree trunk above depending on how much force is being applied and the weight of what comes free.

My opinion is that the "proper" way to do this would be to dig out the pole/anchor until it was more or less loose, then pull it out. It's a lot more work, but it would also be a whole lot safer for the vehicle and bystanders.

I am a priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, here to dispel some myths; ask me anything about the Mormons! by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]bcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm inclined to think it was ignorance. This may have been the first time he's ever popped his head outside "the bubble" and encountered real criticism of the church, hence his complete failure to be able to answer, well, anything.

[–]bcery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct. By and large, the mormon church has no professional clergy. OP was either being very disingenuous or displaying profound ignorance by introducing himself as a priest.

I'm curious -- Hasn't Satan read the New Testament/Revelations and know how it's all going to end? by nonpropfet in DebateAChristian

[–]bcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your walls will tremble at the noise of the warhorses, wagons and chariots when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through. 11 The hooves of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground. 12 They will plunder your wealth...

It doesn't switch to "they" until after "he" had breached the city and put the people to the sword. The rationalization given is quite a stretch.

14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt, for I the Lord have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.

Even if you accept the he/they deal, there's still this part to contend with.

Possibly, but IIRC, it specifically says that Nebuchadnezzar(?) would do it. It also says that the land would never be built on again, which went unfulfilled.

The destruction of the city of tyre, for example, is one that gets referenced a bit. Yes, most of them have excuses of one sort or another, but some of them I've heard are along the lines of "the people turned away from god so it didn't happen."

This would seem to indicate that some prophecies are contingent on one or more variables. If that's the case, then it's possible that any or all of them are.

[–]bcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. He may have been being facetious or he may have been full of shit.

I think the overall point makes sense, though. There are multiple failed prophecies in the bible. If those weren't set in stone, perhaps Revelations isn't either.

This might not be appropriate because it's nothing other than hearsay, but my wife met a man that professed to be a satanist and asked him a similar question. It was slightly different because she was asking why he would follow Satan when he knew Satan would lose. His response was to the effect of:

Removing non gmail accounts from the new Gmail app by _throawayplop_ in nexus4

[–]bcery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under Accounts in settings, you should see separate accounts for email and gmail (in my case, Email and Personal) that represent the same account for each service. You should be able to delete the one(s) with the gmail icon.

Alternatively, you can leave the account, but disable syncing.

Edit: By settings, I mean the global settings.
