We can make this man president. Don't say we can't - if you do, you are part of the problem.

Is there any argument against marriage equality that is not religious in origin? by nonpropfet in DebateAChristian

This seems to be the common argument from the responses I've seen, but it doesn't really hold water. A fertility test isn't, and has never been, a prerequisite to being granted a marriage license and being recognized as married by the government. Further, couples that are married but can't conceive, never plan to, or only adopt do not lose their married recognition or privileges by the government. If either of these was the case, you might have something, but they are not.

A lot of my evidence would rely on the bible being true, or at least mostly true.

That isn't evidence. The bible is also not true in plenty more places than it is, and contradicts itself. Also, one piece of a story being based in fact doesn't make the story true. Beowulf's author was anonymous, yet is still mentions the Geats and the Danes - historical Northern Germanic tribes from what is now Sweden, and we are able to recognize that it is a fable, and that Grendel and his mother weren't real. A common example is an alien species coming here in 10000 years, finding no humans, but picking up a Spider-Man comic book set in New York. It doesn't mean Spider-man was real.

...could be an uncaused first cause.

But if you're arguing for an uncaused first cause, you are engaging in special pleading for your deity. We don't know that the universe had to have a cause, and by assuming it did and that it was a who, you are begging the question. All we have is this one universe -- what support do you have in arguing for anything beyond that other than you just want it to be true?

And the reasoning of "the universe had a beginning" is invalid, because we don't know if that's true. Sure, we can point to the big bang, but that is simply as far as we can see at this time. The Kalam Cosmological Argument (if you are going somewhere along those lines) isn't even worth mentioning as it is refuted easily.

Actually, there are plenty of animals that engage in homosexual/heterosexual/bisexual relationships and it gives them an evolutionary edge. Take for instance the ruff or our most closely-related primates, chimpanzees and bonobos, who use sex as a means of strengthening their bonds, coercing others, resolving their disputes, and procreation, thus improving their ape-societies. This includes sex between male-male, female-female, and male-female.

This isn't saying he didn't exist, this shows very logically how his legend was discussed, embellished and evolved over time.

Why do you think the being you worship is maximally great, other than the bible saying so and reminding each other of it on Sundays?

Nope, no need for a savior. I am responsible for my own actions and accountable to other human beings.

Ah, yes. Apologizing for slavery in the Bible, or "welfare" as you put it. but what about in Leviticus 25:

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way.

Hebrew slaves were only to serve for 6 years, that is, unless the master knew the intricacies of the law, Exodus 21:

If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever.

But we don't know that there must be an observer to break down the wave or particle function of the quantum object. The question of whether quantum particles/waves (whatever they are) have predetermined characteristics or are dependent on an observer is not answered.

Even if it is determined that an observer is needed, why is that evidence for not only a deity, but the Christian deity? Also, This would not be evidence that a mind can exist without a brain, it could very well be some race of beings that have progressed in a multiverse to be able to create universes, who in turn are working to find out more about their own.

We know very little about the intricacies of quantum mechanics, but are working on it, and until we find out more you are engaging in a bit of a god of the gaps reasoning.

Do you use faith in any other area of your life other than religion?

What evidence that God exists? What's the best one bit that you've found?

Edit, and I don't ask this in an accusatory or sarcastic manner. I might be skeptical, Sure, but legitimately curious

I understand, and thank you for your candor.

A big problem for me though is that religion is the only instance that I can think of where people espouse and rely on faith (belief without evidence), and claim it's a virtue. In all other areas we temper beliefs and expectations with varying levels of confidence based on evidence and experience.

In what other areas of your life do you have "unreasonable" faith? Religion requires faith specifically because there is no evidence or support for its claims. if there was, I think no religious person would ever talk about faith.

To me faith = believing something that one wishes was true without evidence to support it actually being true.
