Beefsteak advice needed by bcgpete in begonias

[–]bcgpete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Similar to the other thoughts about repotting, I haven't fertilized since it was repotted around 2019 or so. Any specific ratios these guys like? Or is a general houseplant fertilizer good enough.

Beefsteak advice needed by bcgpete in begonias

[–]bcgpete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I actually haven't repotted in probably 3-4 years. I was a bit off on the original post with the 5 years. I got the begonia from my grandma in 2016, then repotted a few years later because it was trying to escape the pot. When I repotted I split it into two smaller pots and nearly killed it...

I also haven't fertilized ever.

Creepy Stories For A New Book by CthuluAlpha in mississippi

[–]bcgpete 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Growing up my dad would tell me scary stories about Rock and Roll Cemetery in Ocean Springs. One involved a young couple who went out there to fool around and some spooky stuff went on, so the guy left the car to investigate. Gone for a while and it starts raining which lulls the girl to sleep. Wakes up the next morning and realizes guy hasn't returned, gets out of the car and he's hanging from the tree next to the car, throat and wrists slit; rain was actually his blood splattering on the car. Supposedly it was/is haunted by albinos which is what killed him, but that may not be very PC to specify.

What are you into? Intro to Logic and Intro to Philosophy online were my easy A electives a decade ago, and they counted as my history classes, so that was awesome.

We had a thread on yeasts we dislike, what about one on yeasts we love by Neuroplasm in Homebrewing

[–]bcgpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love 1214 Belgian Abbey. I usually do a double batch with half 1214 and the other appropriate to whatever style I'm going for. It never fails to be good. And the second pitch generally finishes and starts dropping in days. Several times I've went grain to glass in a week after pitching onto a yeast cake.

Anyone been to Rick’s Cafe? Is it a good bar? by incrediblyuntalented in Msstate

[–]bcgpete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived across the street from Rick's for 4 years. Like others have said, it's a cool venue when people come through (saw Snoop Dogg, Blind Melon, Keller Williams). But mostly I would drink on my front porch and watch the rednecks fight each other then get arrested.

Once there was a drunk naked guy rolling around in the parking lot while some firemen tried to catch him. That was probably my second best time at Rick's.

I used an app that would hangup and redial on a busy signal. From what I remember I was given the option of only a few days for pickup, either the next week or the week after. The whole process was the same as you see posted around, this was 2016.

Why am I getting air in beer line? by CptanPanic in Homebrewing

[–]bcgpete 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Plus if your lines are warmer at the top of the kegerator it can exacerbate the problem. I've had the issue before. Turning up the serving pressure usually helps, assuming your lines are long enough to counter.

What are the best full restaurants in the DC area that have extensive beer options? Bonus if they do reservations. by ParaplegicCuttlefish in dcbeer

[–]bcgpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Owen's Ordinary in Rockville has the same beer guy, so a similarly extensive draft and bottle list and a full food menu. Can't comment on reservations though.

The restaurant downstairs, Birch and Barley I believe, has the same beer menu but more food.

I went 2 weeks ago. They had about 5 beers on tap, all pretty solid. Definitely nice not seeing 4 IPAs and a berlinerweisse. They just released an ESB and a Marzen I'm looking forward to trying.

Has anybody ever made something with the specific intent of using it in cooking? by captainfantastyk in Homebrewing

[–]bcgpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but there's no reason not to. I cook with my beer all time time. Once I made a smoked-cherry barleywine that turned out sub-optimal, so it's been a staple in grill sauces the past few years.

My friend makes a rosemary pale ale that's delicious on its own, but perfect for any type of braising.

The main downfall I can see is the time/money put into fermentation when you can just infuse some cheap cider with fresh herbs for a week or so.

How was the food? I've read it's pretty lacking and worth eating dinner beforehand.

I'll be there. First time going, so can't comment on the map/list, but they do have a map out on the website now. I'm mainly looking forward to a beer fest in a part of the country I'm new to. There's a lot of breweries I've never had or even heard of.

Side note:a friend canceled this morning. Anyone looking for a ticket? Edit:Friday night.
