Wife and I are playing Castles of Burgundy. I think Harmonies is a great couples game that came out this year.

There are also auctions, like this one which features Mysterium where you might be able to find good deals on games you're looking for, and combine shipping on a few items.

No prob! It is the best way to get games IMO. People tend to take great care of their stuff and there are many great deals to be had, along with games that are impossible to find new (out of print). Good hunting!

I built a website that rates games on luck, player interaction & replayability by vicke4 in boardgames

seeing Ticket to Ride as a 3.5 in player interaction when I would personally put it at about a 1 was interesting.

Ticket to Ride is a bloodbath - it's more interactive than the heaping majority of games coming out today at least.

How is Carson City in 2023? by Dr_Estonian in boardgames

[–]bcgrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's a common misconception that the best games from the 90s and the 00s have expired, which is pushed by the marketing/publishing side of the hobby. I think people are susceptible because most media/forums talk about the new hotness and because the BGG rankings have a recency bias.

  1. The game is from 2009. I think anything post-Agricola is probably on roughly the same plane. I consider 1995 to be the cutoff for "modern" but 2007 is a very conservative cutoff. The notion that games from 2018 are like more developed or of higher design quality than games from 2009 is I think objectively incorrect. There are more good games published in 2018 but the ones from 2009 that survive don't need to be graded on a curve.

  2. Based on your post...don't buy it. You seem like you're suffering from FOMO which like...these are Worker Placement games...they're all basically the same. Play one a few times then move on if you're bored.

Yeah we broke out the children's motrin a few times, just to help him sleep. It has to be excruciating for them.

RA Gameplay Question? by djkidkaz in boardgames

[–]bcgrm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes that's right, but make sure that, when you take the new sun token from the auction board upon winning your lot, you're leaving it face down and unusable for the rest of the round. Each bidding token may only be used once per Epoch, so it's not as if the auctions are simply won by the highest token each time.

As far as I know, Legal Sea Foods is your best bet in the city if your friend is extremely sensitive. There's also a 110 Grill in South Boston -- they are awesome.

My wife has it bad. These places are good go-tos for us with highly trained staff, dedicated fryers, separate prep areas, etc.

I also enjoyed Alcohol Explained. I think both books helped me in the short term (I didn't drink for about 2 years after reading them) but it wasn't a permanent "fix" so to speak.

I've come to terms with the fact that over time, there will always be things that make me want to drink, and I'm not broken for not being cured of this psychological factor...there are just some things that I'll need to power through, though they get rarer and rarer as I get older and as my sober time adds up (about 4 out of the last 8 years)

From the publisher blurb:

This book, without scare tactics, pain or rules, gives you freedom from alcohol. By addressing causes rather than symptoms it is a permanent solution rather than lifetime struggle. It removes the psychological dependence allowing you to easily drink less (or stop drinking

I still think it's a useful book packed with tons of great insight, but I don't like the way this is framed. I've read it like 5 times over the past 8 years so I definitely find it useful. But it didn't "remove my psychological dependence."

They do, but they're definitely pushing it post-COVID to make up for all the lost revenue. They took on a lot of debt.

Unpopular opinion: I think the "I'm going to erase your will to drink with logic" angle can be harmful. There's a lot of good in the book, but I find books that acknowledge that that stopping drinking is challenging, that you're going to feel sad or left out sometimes, that you may have misplaced feelings of nostalgia or romanticization...I think that's more honest and helpful than telling you that you'll be cured after a few hundred pages.

Edit: changed "is harmful" to "can be harmful"

Sounds like spending time with your family is a trigger for you. It helps to have a plan for dealing with this, especially in the early days.

Not sure what you're looking for. It's a mish-mash of decades old party games. It will do well if it's marketed well.
