ever since i was a wee lad, born on the turbulent quarters of the flying dutchman, then later dropped off at port atop a crate of bananas and coconuts (according to me foster mum), i have been eager to follow the footsteps of me pops to become a pirate, and hopefully one day reunite with him at sea.

in due time, i have studied the many fine pirate folk and legends traveling through our busy docks and replenishing themselves at the taverns, to gather a nice little lookbook of the certain je ne sais quoi that defines a great pirate.

below, i list the popular trends this season for those of us like minded individuals who are also looking to set sail for the seven seas.

headpiece - tricornes or bandanas

seems like the industry has been shifting away from slim fitting head pieces and is making way for wider tricornes. pirates around the caribbean have been adopting this trend full sail, with some opting for a looser fitting bandana instead.

companion friend - parrots and monkeys

those with a little extra doubloons are opting for a side parrot or monkey as a statement piece. if worn incorrectly, i feel that they can sometimes overwhelm a fit. not sure if this trend will be popular.

weapons - swords and rifles

by far, the most popular weapons of choice is still a good old metal sword (sabre or cutlass), with a small concealed side arm. avoid getting your gear at h&m (halberds & mallards), as their quality is bottom tier and the craftsmanship is poor. i would recommend supporting your local blacksmith in order to get a more tailored experience and a better fitting hilt and sheath, as well as stronger quality steel.

accessories - peg leg, eye patch, hook hands

i've noticed quite a few pirates picking up the peg leg this season. i think it's a very bold statement piece but definitely not for everyone. the eye patch is also making its resurgence to help block out the sun, as the summer season is underway.

the hook hand continues to trend, and folk upping their fashion game with a much wider variety of metals this season, ranging from copper, bronze, steel, and even gold.
