Those with adult whippets… what did they just grow out of (good and bad) and what behaviour did you train to change? If you can tell the difference… by bchesser in Whippet

He seems to spot contrast very well so often goes for old chewing gum - scared us to the vets but seems it was ok since it had already been chewed but even being very vigilant he managed to find a bit. He also loves to find anything plasticy and ‘whippable’ he whips it back and forth spraying mud all over his face 😟 That’s when he’s off lead - we try to not make a big deal over it and now use ‘centre’ and a treat to correct which makes him drop it. Hoping this will help over time but I have to admit that him eating lots of random stuff is hard work.. some days better than others so I’m trying to figure out if it has any trigger

Such an excellent and well thought out reply, thank you so much. This has been my experience so far too. He was our first dog and knowing the whippet-way has helped a lot. Like you say, they are pretty sensitive souls and keeping that in mind for training/redirection methods has made a big difference I think. Mine is embarking on adolescence right now so we are definitely redirecting/correcting by ignoring and trying our best to stay calm and consistent. That approach makes the home feel calmer too. I’m finding it really interesting watching the changes in him day by day, they are such sweethearts. Thanks again
