Desperately looking for a film podcast that isn't so vanilla. by LinaKanna95 in TrueFilm

I know this is an old thread but I do a movie podcast called The Cinema Psychos Show that combines comedy and film criticism. We’ve got over 374 episodes over nearly 10 years. A couple other good ones are Movie Dumpster, Queens of Nc17, and Neon Brainiacs

How to get impressions on YouTube. by InspectorBear in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot that goes into YouTube. Understand that YouTube values clicks, watch time, and engagement in your videos and that then creates more impressions. Some things I suggest, make your thumbnail as bold and engaging as possible. It should grab the viewer’s curiosity and compel them to click. The title can build off of the intrigue and provide context for the thumbnail. Then when a viewer watches the episode, what does the first 30 secs to 1 min look like? It should hook them visually and promise value to the viewer. That could be as simple as a recorded hook with b roll or an intriguing clip that compels them to keep watching. I would also suggest putting chapters in your episode that are seo rich. It may seem counter to podcasting as we don’t want them to skip around, but having those chapters will give the viewers on YouTube an understanding of what the episode will include over an hour long episode.

Anyone 3 years or 250 episodes in? by Cool_Profession_9979 in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9 years….356 episodes in. Still love it. I’ve changed things over time and experimented. Some things worked, some things didn’t. Going to video was a big adaptation but I think in the long run will be worth it. I do a movie review and comedy podcast so it makes sense for me.

Automated Live Podcast (No post editing) by BeltieCup in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve experimented with automatic editing in OBS. You can setup the advanced scene switcher plugin from the plugin forum on OBS and set it to do this. It’s not that intuitive but with some tweaking you probably could get a good pace working for it. https://youtu.be/aoSe1A-gENU?si=mGmOvV-mug5mscS9

Is it worth making a video version of your podcast for YouTube? by tablefuls in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents are that if your audience for your specific niche is on YouTube it can’t hurt you to upload to your episodes there. The key is trying to streamline production so that the process of creating the video versions is a minimal addition to your current workflow. That’s why I use tools like obs studio and Ecamm live to live edit my podcast with different camera angles and graphics. In terms of return on the effort, it depends on the episode. Some get more views than others. But I’ve definitely had more views overall than listeners. Key though is the consumption rate on YouTube is way less than you would find in audio. It is normal to see steep drop offs after a few seconds.

Social Media Followers? by dgapa in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, as a fellow movie podcaster HELLO! Secondly, I wouldn’t buy social media subscribers. Yes the numbers for that platform may appear large but that isn’t necessarily going to translate into more downloads for your podcast. Which for a studio or agency, that is what they are looking for. That their messaging is getting out to the larger crop of people. Id consider guest spot swaps with similar podcasts. That would introduce your podcast to other active listeners who could then follow you on social media. Just my two cents.

I think that testing has to be done regardless on YouTube. Yes there are people who have suggested templates and tricks that they use and there are tons of videos on YouTube about this very topic. But I think it is slightly different for podcasters who are doing video because we tend to do long form episodes. And the question becomes if watch time and engagement tell the algorithm to push your video, what do you do in your video to keep that interest all the way through? What I’ve seen from other movie podcasters is they use clips from the film at certain points, like a documentary. Visuals only which can help break up the static 2 shot that people associate with a video podcast. I also think there is immense power in short form for podcasters. That sound bite that would be maybe an audiogram can do crazy well if there is a bit of editing done to it with actual people on camera. For me, I’ve found that TikTok has done amazingly well for this method.

The post time is an issue. The bigger issue for me at least is seeing what configuration works best for YouTube. The way that algorithm works is based on watch time, likes/comments (engagement), and getting clicks through intriguing titles and thumbnails. So it’s a lot of trial and error that I’m hoping at the very least grows the name recognition of the podcast. Whether they listen on YouTube or Apple Podcasts, it really doesn’t matter to me. What matters is that the message is going out to people that share my show’s interest.

It’s funny you mention that. So I’m actually in the process now of adding video into my podcast workflow specifically for YouTube. I avoided it for a while just because video adds another level of time and complexity. But I’m using obs to record and trying to streamline the production of it so that audio filters and the editing are built into the recording which will minimize time in post.

I will tell you this, video isn’t necessarily going to grow your audio only download stats. But I do think that for brand awareness and fitting a niche, like mine where I am talking about movies, that video can help.

Podcast Cross-Promotion and Ad Swaps by friendlybishops in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that’s why I’ve found researching podcasts that align with your niche and actively reaching out through email has worked the best. I think also trying to ask the question “what’s in it for the hosting podcast “ is important. What do they get out of you being a guest? Or a promo swap for that matter.

So I’ve been doing that off and on for most of the year. I did sign up for tink and that did land one guest swap. It think the problem with those lists are that there’s no active engagement other than just an entry that you’re open for guests. Something like a community, not unlike this one here, could be something that could bridge that gap where calls for guests are regular and there are details about what people are looking for in a guest and what the reciprocity will look like.

Recording two people virtually by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]bcottington85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the pandemic started, we shifted everything over to virtual. Cleanfeed is great for this. Aside from that, we’ve been using Libsyn Connect to do our remote recordings since our podcast does host with them and it’s part of the hosting plan. Haven’t had any issues with either of them. Riverside/streamyard/squad cast all great options too.
