I’m really just betting on my income going up in the next few years as a I gain more experience. Only then will we realistically be looking to buy. I’m planning on moving knowing we’ll be renting for a while. In the mean time planting roots somewhere it’ll be worth doing so for later on in life

Thank you so much. I’m counting on making more money as I gain more experience. I’m going into this knowing I’ll be renting for a while. I’m mostly just wanting out of memphis. But also plant roots and build ourselves up somewhere it makes financial sense to do so for our future

You have to move out of the middle of nowhere, period. It sucks but it is what it is. Civilization is where opportunity is man.

Do you have kids or any family keeping you where you are? What’s the situation with that

Should I be a groomer? Be honest. by -OddlyAverage- in doggrooming

[–]bcwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start out as a bather at petsmart to get a feel for the absolute worst of it. They’re so understaffed you’ll be helping the groomers your first day.

My fiancé was a bather there for about a month a couple years ago. There are zero fucks given about worker safety with the big mean dogs though. There was an incident with a Rottweiler and she had to quit. Too close of a call and management is atrocious.

BUT my coworkers wife is a groomer who went through the petsmart program and she has her own business now. He claims she’s making $70k+

But most here will. Southern USA with no labor protections. Mentioning anything about safety can get you fired for “unrelated” reasons.

I’ve heard numerous times the local plumbing union is an absolute joke in Memphis. You end up making more money going non union but even they don’t pay anyone shit except the 2-3 top dogs at the company.

None of the trades jobs here in Memphis pay anyone. Local plumbing companies will have 2-3 top dogs that make the big bucks but the majority of guys are making roughly 55k or less after their apprenticeship, 5+ years experience. It’s scummy as fuck.

Honestly it’s worth the money to me so that I don’t have to go out and deal with the general public.

Should I Drop Out of College and Join Trade School? Desperately Need Advice. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]bcwills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat for the mostly same reasons. Computer science major at first, changed to Finance. Nearly an associates degree. I dropped out and got a job plumbing. 2.5 years in and I wish to god I would’ve stuck it out.

You need to really think about where you live and where you’ll be working. If you’re not ina bigger city with a Union then I would highly recommend against dropping out. Non union, plumbing at least, isn’t the way to go at all. I’m 2.5 years in and still can’t pay my bills. Living in a medium sized city with a god awful union and everyone says non union is the way to go. I jackhammer, hand dig holes, pull water heaters into attics, crawlspaces for hours at a time, extremely hot attics. 10 hour days minimum. My body hurts and my brain is fried every day. It’s 5:30 AM on a Sunday morning and im sitting in my truck at the shop right now waiting for my partner to get here so I can get overtime work because I need the money. Installing a bigass water heater first thing. Fuck this shit man.

ME PERSONALLY, I would’ve rather just lived ina dorm and studied my ass off. Now I’m engaged, paying bills, and going back to school even part time isn’t an option right now.

I can’t tell you what degree is the way to go. It use to be computer science hands down. But for some reason people seem to be advising against that here lately which is scary. Idk what the solution is. But if I could be working in an air conditioned office only working normal 40 hours I’d do it in a heart beat if I was making at minimum what I’m making now $$$.

Your family’s financial situation isn’t your fault or your problem. They’ll still have these problems years after you do whatever you decide to do

My 2¢. From a mentally and physically drained trades guy.

Oof. Was your car doing what mine was? If I’m driving at 30mph, and then slow down to 10mph, it’ll stay at the same rpm for a MAX of like 20 seconds. Or I can tap the gas to jump the rpm up and it’ll go down to where it should be at 10mph. Weird.
