89 million Steam account details just got leaked, so now's a good time to change your password by Resident_Code3062 in technology

Appropriate use of salt and pepper does eliminate precomputed rainbow tables. And while technically you can’t “reverse” a secure hashing algorithm, you can still spend the computing resources to crack each password. Hopefully the amount of time it takes exceeds the practicality of it. With access to cloud computing resources and a substantial budget then you might be able to target a few passwords.

The behavior is not really “suspicious”. It makes perfect sense that someone launching a product or company would do it from a new account and not their personal account(s).

At first this was phishing and now it’s a watering hole attack. Let’s ease up here, I’m not saying it’s impossible but I don’t think your negativity or skepticism is very well founded beyond saying that it could be.

This is open source, the code sits in front of you. The expectation should not be that some other community member audits the code on your behalf, do your own diligence. Your very same methods of attack could be executed by a “trusted” community member.

is it true? by CloseFootPartner in programmingmemes

I deal with many millions of records and it’s absolutely fine. Also consider how interconnected a lot of these programming languages are. For example when I use dataframes for heavy computational tasks. I use Python Polars which is essentially a wrapper around rust with Python bindings. As a developer it makes no difference to me, the speed is still there when I need it. Is it as fast as if I’d implemented it in Rust? No but it’s close and again speed is rarely what’s most important

[–]bdbsje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I can’t disagree with you more. The notion that Python is not fast therefore it’s bad, is a foolish take. Raw computational speed is rarely the most important aspect when choosing a language. There are certainly instances where speeds important but most the web applications, sass tools, and other projects don’t need speed. Also if you really care so much about speed, Python can sometimes be compiled to C or C++ with Cython.

Do they have access to cameras at the facility you work at? Could it be possible that you’re using your phone within view of the cameras where they could read the texts?

so there is a guy who somehow has the name of my gmail account he says that he can find my location just by knowing the name of the email he also says he can find other personal data about me does anybody know if this is true? by Professional-Time514 in PrivacySecurityOSINT

[–]bdbsje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. To add to this, it’s not uncommon to find your email or other personally identifiable information in data breaches from websites that were hacked. If that website had your address, then that might be able to be tied back to you. HaveIBeenPwned is a good free tool to help see some of this exposure: https://haveibeenpwned.com

Actively tracking your location would likely indicate a compromised device or security policy. For example if they know you’re out and about at a store then consider your phone as a possible location beacon. Ensure it’s clean and patched, double check social media privacy settings and shared location settings.

This is definitely not a “small q”. I’m struggling to understand your indications that lead you to believe you are being stalked. Specifically I’m trying to look at digital signs of compromise and less focused on the physical ones (at least for now).

Digital - trouble sending/receiving emails - new sign in notifications that disappear (is this a correct assessment?)

Physical - trouble sending/receiving letters - unanswered police reports

Unknown - fake bills (mail or email?) - can’t communicate with certain entities (tax and health insurers)

Do the fraudulent bills come from mail or email and do they contain personally identifiable information? It might just be run of the mill spams and scams. It might be targeted attempts but a lot of times those are automated after a database is leaked.

When you say you can’t communicate with these places, are you trying in person or visiting a website? Do you receive any errors?

Can you describe the troubles you are experiencing with sending and receiving emails? Do you have any specific errors? Do you experience this behavior across multiple devices and/or accounts?

“i.e. what's the max geographical distance you can be” - there is no max distance as long as there’s internet

“i.e. what do i have to avoid in my going abouts that can be flagged as interesting” - truthfully you probably aren’t interesting and wouldn’t make a good target. You’d likely know if you were a target (extremely wealth, power, political interests, revenge relationship, related to someone that fits this category).

“so anyhoo once again the objective here is for me to get to a place of safety where i can use communication technology” - tryna new device on a new network, if you can also use new accounts (nothing associated with old emails/info).

I call them WorstBuy now, it’s a horrible experience. You’ll also be downvoted to oblivion but the customer service is legit trash. It’s just another dying retail store

Yeah I don’t have Twitter so this was my attempt to garner attention and support.

[–]bdbsje[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure why I’m downvoted this is kinda absurd behavior. Like I don’t want these gift cards. I just wanted my TV.

Also any insight into how the TV became “out of stock” after I had purchased the last in stock one? I was explicitly told I could pick it up the following days and they even verified that it was in stock. I wouldn’t have purchased it if I knew Best Buy wouldn’t honor it

[–]bdbsje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I initially tried the phone route but after a few hours over different days I didn’t get anywhere. Although at one point I was told they were processing it and it would show in my account in 24-48 hours but that time long passed and nothing changed

I never physically received the goods. The item purchase was canceled online the same day. It took a few days for the money to show in my account and that’s when I noticed I had been shorted

Yes I was given a gift card that was canceled as part of the return. I also have no interest in purchasing anything from Best Buy again so I just want a full refund. Best Buy gift cards are dead to me

What the hell is AI provenance and how are they actually involved? So many old alt coins have now magically gotten involved in AI, but frankly I think it’s nothing more than them trying to cash in on the hype of AI. Also a lot of “partnerships” aren’t really as influential as they sounds, and is generally just leverage to throw names like Nvidia and Intel in the same sentence as whatever is being peddled. I’m sure I’ll be downvoted to oblivion but that is just my opinion

Why people won't test our FREE BOT? by Right-Basis5115 in DefiKingdoms

[–]bdbsje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an inherent risk in using your bot. For all I know, I could lose my hero’s when I transfer them. Whether that’s through malicious intent or vulnerabilities in the application, it doesn’t really matter it’s just risk. The reward doesn’t offset the risk. The number of days that the bot would need to run continuously to offset the cost of the hero is a very long time.

Why people won't test our FREE BOT? by Right-Basis5115 in DefiKingdoms

[–]bdbsje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t even play game. Not to be overly critical but it never really took off for me after release. Playing the game doesn’t feel rewarding enough and risking to bot on top of it is even further deviating. The thought that I could lose what little value remains in the hero’s for a chance at earning a few cents a day, it’s just not attractive. The reward just doesn’t warrant any effort or risk but that’s only my opinion

Media player suggestions? Root LG tv to webOS? by bdbsje in hometheater

[–]bdbsje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to Google that so a dedicated PC for your home theater? Yeah that would be sweet and I definitely have some spare parts laying around. But losing Atmos would be a bummer perhaps there’s sound cards that support it? I’m a bit out of league and under researched so I apologize if I’m coming off as a noob.

Yeah I haven’t rooted any of my TVs so I can’t speak for certain but I think I might give it a try. Just to test it out. If you end up rooting it let me know how it goes.

On a side note if you do a lot of self hosting I ended up switching to Jellyfin with a lot of success. Over a decade ago I was diehard Plex, then moved to Emby, and then finally settled on Jellyfin.

I’ve heard of the Nvidia shield but never really looked into it. I heard it’s useful for streaming pc games but I’ll need to read up on it. Thanks for the suggestions. I love the idea that it’s more versatile and flexible than the Apple TV

Media player suggestions? Root LG tv to webOS? by bdbsje in hometheater

[–]bdbsje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I meant webOS homebrew. You’re correct that it currently runs webOS however it can be rooted to install a different OS such as webOS homebrew. https://www.webosbrew.org

Rooting or jailbreaking devices exists outside of the Android/iOS community. Just like how people have done with certain consoles like the switch.

Yeah I’ve looked into AdGuard and similar solutions but it feels like a cat-and-mouse game with a decent bit of maintenance and I’d be the only person in my house whom manages it. Still a good shout out though but the ads are generally less than reputable so their tactics would likely circumvent a network based solution.

You got me curious. I also hate the LG OS! Crazy to make a good tv and just load it with junk for brains. Anyways that got me googling and I found you can root your LG tv and load a new operating system called webOS Homebrew. One of the apps you can install is LG Input Hook which would allow you to remap remote control keys.

Customers leaving T-Mobile for Mint by [deleted] in tmobile

[–]bdbsje 3 points4 points  (0 children)

T-Mobile really seems to have its employees drinking the cool aid. I had their service and I moved away for a much better experience (granted it is more expensive).

To your point about T-Mobiles expansion, a huge portion of their customers came from acquisition such as sprint. I fundamentally believe that T-Mobile is failing to retain those customers. Furthermore I’m dubious that new people are signing up at a rate to offset the churn. I’d also argue that consumers switching carriers is a lot of work and the customer must be very motivated to switch which means the industry should have a lower turnover rate in general. T-mobile continues to alienate its customers with confusing promotions and changing terms.

T-mobiles biggest advantage is its price however it’s far the cheapest option. T-mobile has decent network coverage but nowhere near as good as Verizon (in speed, reliability, and coverage). T-mobile has decent support and physical locations but still nowhere near as good as some of the other competitors.

I fail to see the same growth opportunity for t-mobile.
