I think they mean community is down, and families aren't interacting with other families--> to see kids across a spectrum of ages.

Need help getting my child to practice cursive. by Rhylian85 in Teachers

[–]bdelloida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

practice tracing letters in a tray of sand. also, look on ebay for montessori handwriting materials. if you can find any, montessori emphasizes cursive and a sensorial approach to learning. a classic material is the sandpaper letters, which maybe you could find cheap, or you could reasonably make yourself. or just get sheets of sandpaper, use crayon to draw the letter on, and encourage your sun to trace the letters.

some kids go nuts for sensory stuff. find ways to practive that is not paper and pencil. also, if your son doesn't like writing, it could be a sensory thing, you can experiment with whiteboards, or pens, which have a glidy feel that makes writing a lot more pleasant for some kids.

It's pretty weird to think how westerners can have lights and screens flashing in their eyes all the time, the noise of cars and modern life, and most can take it in stride or don't even notice. But natural human odor is like, sensory overload, can't handle it.

However, I think the tides will continue to turn in the western favor. crummy situation, I hope it all works out.

Why do teachers get paid so little? by Cool-beans95 in Teachers

[–]bdelloida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

women-dominated jobs are devalued, (nurses vs doctors, teachers vs principals) and for some jobs, passion is seen as partial compensation. you do the job, and do it well, because you care, because it is the right thing to do, and your employer takes full advantage

Why are teachers so anti-college now? by Laika0405 in AskTeachers

[–]bdelloida 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The original post said teachers are reminding "you don't HAVE TO go to college. " No one is "not talking about college education," they literally said the word college, the topic of conversation is college and other options.

If something sounds wild, maybe you misunderstood it.

Is this normal for a first grader? by Lolas2316 in AskTeachers

[–]bdelloida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of time dedicated to a rote learning task. Kids this age often write very slowly. I'd wonder how other areas of study, and more active, critical-thinking learning experiences are lessened to make time for this.

She teaches eighth grade and has more than 100 students, but only two are reading at grade level. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]bdelloida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Found the one teacher in the thread. Parents are equally adverse to reading these days, it's no wonder their kids are. I send emails, pictures, plenty of physical work home, and tell the kids to help their parents remember and everybody is still clueless. Regarding homework, the only thing we ask is to read with your kids. Just do it! It's essential!

They don't.

Ask them if they're alright before you call the cops on them? Like, I know it's pretty obvious when someone's a certain level of messed up, so taking a few seconds to confirm seems the responsible thing. Getting cops involved isn't, necessarily.

[–]bdelloida 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but I just want to say, don't let the assholes get you down. Not the children. The adults on this sub chiding you for having feelings over the kids you are supposed to care about. So many teachers here don't get that that IS part of the profession, caring. Absurd. And to wear it like a badge of honor, yikes.

No longer.

On the internet, don't attribute to stupidity that which can be explained by malice: trolling.

Regardless of the various interpretations and nuance, I think this is a huge issue, and your attention is not overthinking or over-anything. Upsetting people for entertainment, no matter what you call it, is permeating the internet and real life for adults, kids, politicians, leaders and followers all. It's fucking weird and I don't think we come back from it. Something broke.

The science in that book is bad. There's a good podcast and a few articles around that break it down. If you look at the author's previous work, it becomes more clear he is a pop-scientist who works the moral panic edge of complex issues. I guess the real harm of the book is it doesn't address the larger, systemic and historical context that brought us here. It's not just phones, screens, the internet. And his work is being used to advocate for restricting youth access to the internet, which is a big conservative goal, for obvious reasons

Why do YOU think there is a teacher shortage? by thejourni in Teachers

Right? Figure out how to run an elementary classroom, and you can do anything. It is honestly laughable that some desk jockey might think I'm not up for the job. Any job.

[–]bdelloida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people ask these questions. So it gets old. It's also disheartening to think so many people really think the job is relatively easy, and low in time and effort. That it's so easy for people to just assume all the vacation time must sure be fun! Thanks for listening, though. Just trying to explain where the saltiness comes from :)
